A Meeting of Fact and Fiction in Modern America

We’re having so much civilized fun in Augusta right now I had almost forgotten about the outside world. I also forgot that only 18 months ago I had not heard of Jordan Spieth. Spieth it seems forgot all about the winds that have held all but four (4!) men under par this week. Masters magic, majestic and memorable.

Anyway, this morning as I glanced around the internets, two stories caught my eye.  That’s how my mind works – I like piecing together seemingly unrelated items of information. Many organizational thanks to Matt Drudge.

Things must be a bit slow in Boston this weekend. The Globe, having run out of real news, decided to run a lampoon front page featuring the horrors of Trumpzilla:

Curfews extended in multiple cities

Boston Globe, April 10, 2016.

The main fake story concerns Trump’s pet issue of illegal immigration. It’s a pet because Americans are growing sick of the related problems; they’re tired out from five decades of betrayal from Washington by everyone from Ted Kennedy to Ronald Reagan to Marco Foamio. A byline says “riots continue”. There would be riots. There will be riots. There are riots now. We grow tired of riotous behavior and other criminality.

Perhaps that thought subconsciously attracted me to another headline story: the volunteer militia is growing. An IndyStar reporter sites a “study” by the Southern Poverty Communism Center (talk about a lampoon) which shows (without mentioning numbers) volunteer militia ranks have grown by 37% in the past two years. The Star maintains neutrality; the Southern Commie Loons are mortified; I am relieved.

I also have numbers – estimates from the Census. Based on my reading of the following graph, I estimate the strength of the militia, unorganized, at around 30 – 40 million men. That makes it the largest armed force in the world.

nimbus-image-1460293982216

Census.gov.

I draw my estimate from that left side (male) segment from just below age 20 to just above age 40. That provides the elementary math strength of the combined State militias. Georgia law holds: “the unorganized militia shall consist of all able-bodied male residents of the state between the ages of 17 and 45 who are not serving in any force of the organized militia…” O.C.G.A. 38-2-3(d)(2006). All states have similar laws with slight age variances.

This estimate excludes men serving in the Imperial military and those few thousands actually serving in the organized state militias. Think of it as the reserve militia force. Perhaps you are a member. I am. Thank you for your service.

We many men are the militia contemplated in the Constitution. The same militia which stood guard over the old Republic until the 20th Century (with the terrible exception of 1861-1865). The “well regulated militia” of Second Amendment lore.

In truth, the militia is almost completely unregulated – so as to be defined as “unorganized”. That is a legal problem brought about by a century of socialism. Demographically and obesity-wise, the group is terribly unfit. That would be a product of processed foods and television. Still, we are exceedingly well armed – a failure of the Commies to institute that final plank of the Manifesto. That single failure will be lethally critical. When the riots begin in full we will be ready. Hell, some of us are looking forward to it.

In the meanwhile the sun in up on a near perfect day in Augusta. The winds should be dying down a bit. Good luck to Spieth and company. We’ve got one more terrific day of suspended reality!

Another terrific Masters week is in full swing. The 80th Tournament commences tomorrow. Today saw an epic Par Three Contest featuring nine hole in one shots – a record. Also a record was the hole in one by Gary Player at age 80! Jimmy Walker won with the lowest score in event history.

The Par 3 Contest is a great way to kick off the Masters. (USATSI)

Last night Shinebox was rocking at Hooters. They’ll be back Friday night.

America, Bob Woodward, decline, Donald Trump, economy, education, election, freedom, government, ISIS, Masters Tournament, Michael Snyder

The Donald sat down for an in depth interview with Bob Woodward. I have a great deal of respect for these two men. Trump is Trump and, increasingly, the only mainstream, one party system candidate who makes any sense. He almost makes the idea of voting plausible. Woodward is a legend in his own time. He turned aside from a possible CIA career because the application process was too long. He certainly has the knack for sleuthing.

Here’s what the two hashed out on Trump’s plans:

The headliner is Trump fears a massive recession is about to hit and hard. I think it has begun. We’re overdue and the circumstances are right. In fact, this could be something we haven’t seen since the 1930s. Taking into account world conditions and where we are in Plato’s cycle it could be more of a 490s situation.

Trump says he will cut taxes immediately (never a bad idea) and eliminate the entire (on books) federal debt within two terms.

He wants to renegotiate treaties and trade deals to end America’s dual roll of World policeman and whipping boy. We can’t afford either anymore.

He wants high level staff to refrain from writing memiors while his administration is ongoing. By the way, I smell another Woodward bestseller.

He talked about potential judiciary appointments. He says he’s listening to the Federalist Society on that front. There are many decent FS people. I would know as a past two term chapter president myself. But, in that role, I witnessed the inner operations of the Society and Washington. I concluded this network is beyond repair – terminally evil.

After discussing family and useless political nonsense Trump returned to the massive financial bubble, under the economy like a supervolcano. Trump says he can fix the problem through shrewd negotiation and restructuring. The man is an expert there.

On the international front Trump oddly taks about disengagement (good) while simultaneously decrying the depleted American military (a tired, tired Republican topic). He thinks he will work well with Putin, China and other foreign powers. I can see that.

Trump’s potential problems are three: Congress (all that renegotiation and cutting must pass through them); the Federal Reserve (they exist to promote a new dark age) and; the American people (see below). Washington runs on debt, death and destruction. It will suffer no man, not even Trump, interfering with the party. I think at best Trump will delay or mitigate the consequences a bit while giving part of the country reason to chant and cheer. In plain terms he may be able to make the ending somewhat enjoyable.

The end of the America we knew has come. This is not the country I grew up in (I’m not THAT old either). One sees the signs everywhere, everyday. For example, I am a huge Masters fan. This year’s tournament looks to be awesome. As with anything I see the good and the bad. Yesterday, Saturday, I saw a custom BMW I8, a Ferrari, and a Lamborghini all on Washington Road. That’s a good sign. It means there is prosperity and high socity still left. However, this morning while sipping coffee and researching this article, I saw a squadron of Apache gunships patrolling over west Augusta.

The helicopters are not in training. Like the sports cars they are here for a reason, an unpleasant reason. The military has been guarding (silently) the tournament for a few years now. I’m glad they’re here but it’s a shame they have to be. It’s a telltale sign of how bad things are.

If you join us this week you will notice a thousand or so police officers. For the most part they direct traffic, keep things moving and guard celebrities. The military is here in case ISIS shows up.

How the hell did we come to this? There is a web of dozens of reasons. I’ll cut straight to the primary one – us. The people, maybe a majority of them, have descended into a pitiful state of savagery, obesity, sloth and stupidity. It’s 496 not 1929. Those four traits run together but the (willful) stupidity is the driving force.

20121125-american-idiot

Google.

Last week Michael Snyder took a no holds barred look at how incredibly dumbed down our nation is.

He reports: “After two years in college, 45% of students showed no significant gains in learning; after four years, 36% showed little change.” Those are college students, the supposedly educated.

Americans spend on average ten hours per day starring at some sort of screen – at least half of that is television. Some people literally spend all their waking hours with their minds abdicated to programed garbage. These people are alive but they do not live.

“It is not because of a lack of input that we have become so stupid as a society. The big problem is what we are putting into our minds.

If we continue to put garbage in, we are going to continue to get garbage out, and that is the cold, hard reality of the matter.”

Sad but true. If we really want America to be great again, we must ourselves become great again. That starts with living life in the real world. It can be difficult but it why we are here. We must rise to the challenge before time runs out. Tick, tick, tick.

Vote if you care – for Trump or anyone else. The circumstances are up to you.

I hope you didn’t fall for too many corny jokes yesterday. I stayed in bed to avoid any confusion. Now, April 2nd, provides a great opportunity to examine several examples of the modern fooling of the masses.

Watch or click CNBC and you’d think America was in the throws of a bull market. Things are better than good, right? Numbers may be isolated and manipulated in order to create illusions. Taken in pari materia they forcast the return of stagflation. What’s next? Disco?

The Republicans and Democrats are moving heaven and earth to convince you your vote counts. It doesn’t. Elections are and always have been rigged. In the past the irregularities were ametuer, brutish. Remember, if you will, the spectacle of Bush v. Gore, which definitively showed American elections to be flim flam writ large. Today the manipulation is a science.

Before he went to prison Andrés Sepúlveda made a living Rigging South American elections. He’s an expert. He says there’s a 100% chance the U.S. presidential election is fixed. He’s just talking about information. Who knows what the Diebold ballot computers can do. Vote if you like.

As I mentioned a few days ago most Western media outlets are propaganda agents of the CIA and other government entities. The “news” is a tool to drive public opinion in favor of various state schemes. It also rewrites and obscures history. Remember the Liberty? Probably not.

Reality television has spawned reality reality, a strange world of scripted and idiotic conformity. Anyone out of sync with the blind herd is a threat to be eliminated. Nowhere is this clearer than at our universities. Once bastions of learning and markets for the exchange of ideas, the schools are now mere temples of indoctrination. Professors promoting or defending academic honesty are ridiculed and disciplined. Welcome to wonderland.

The good news is, starting tomorrow, for one week the forces of decent civilization congregate in one place – Augusta.

They appeared earlier this week. Augusta Chronicle.

Prepare yourselves for a short suspension of modern madness. Relax, catch your breath, have a pimento cheese sandwich.

America, Constitution, Masters Tournament

I don’t feel like writing this morning. My back hurts. That makes sitting, standing, and lying down painfully difficult. You can imagine, I imagine…

So, I give you this: a link to Paul Craig Roberts’s incredible March 23rd oration on the state of the U.S. and the Constitution. Sometimes it’s just better to hand over the mic; no one says it like Roberts.

I will add only the following, off topic enough to inspire speculation as to Ibuprofen intoxication: the big tent is up at Hooters.

Yes. It’s almost Christmas at Disneyland.

Augusta, Jesus, Masters Tournament, Rock Fore! Dough, Spring

Today we observe the vernal equinox in the Northern hemisphere, better known as the first day of Spring. It’s a big deal for gardeners and sun worshipers, both beachy and pagan. Today also marks the feast of Palm Sunday, the commemoration of Jesus’s entry into Jerusalem and the beginning of Holy Week. Easter is coming fast.

Pietro Lorenzetti, 1320.

There are but five days until the release of what may be the best Batman movie ever, judging by the last two trailers.

In the Garden City preparations are almost finished for the 2016 Masters Tournament and related festivities. The azaleas are blooming. John Daly is prepping his RV. The big tent at Hooters will be up any day.

If you’re in town the evening of Tuesday, April 5th, you can attend the annual Rock Fore! Dough charity concert in Columbia County. When I returned to Augusta nine years ago the event truly rocked. Cheap Trick headlined that year. There was a promise of energetic entertainment each year for locals and tourists alike.

Then one year they invited Darius Rucker. They also changed the venue to Columbia County as I mentioned. There people are more than accepting of pop country. Thus began the only tragedy of Masters week. Rock Fore! is now little more than the Darius Rucker, post Blowfish, and friends crooner fest. This year I think Darius will be joined by such dynamic acts as: the Whining Warbles, Toothless Billy, Tight Pants Hick, and some other spiked-hair hillbillies. It’s just what the bored, pill addicted soccor moms of Evans want. The good news is they will all be in a wine and whine induced stupor the next day as we enjoy the Par Three fun.

Happy Sunday and welcome Spring!

I survived another Masters Tournament!  And what an affair it was – one of the best in great period of bests!  Tiger didn’t win but he did greatly improve over his recent forays. None of my favorites made it either.  Hats off to Jordan Spieth.  What a showing!

The show over at the Hooters’s tent on Washington Road was outstanding as well:

(How about John Daly performing with Shinebox!?)

Seriously, who knew Daly can sing?  He sang Knockin’ on Heaven’s Door by Bob Dylan. And, he was good.  That’s Big John in the above picture on the left.  I have a video of the whole song.  Shinebox is disappointed as you must be that I lack the technological know how to post it.  It’s coming along with blog-related videos.  Remember, I have the tech skills of a possum.

(It was a great week.  Join us next year.)

As a happy aside – we just celebrated tax day!  Another best of best days but some are perplexed: “As they rush to file their taxes by April 15, Americans are rightfully frustrated with the complexity of the 74,608-page-long federal tax code.”  The Not-So-Affordable Care Act (just another tax) added a measly three thousand pages…  What’s there to complain about?

Today I published An Unexpected Gift: Christmas at the Supreme Court, a celebration of the Court’s ruling in Rodriguez vs. United States, April 21, 2015.  Give it a read.  I’m working on a few more heavy hitters, one of which might make it out today.  Stay tuned.

fun, Masters Tournament, Tiger Woods

Yesterday I predicted Tiger Woods would fail to make the cut at this year’s Masters. Today I’m not so sure.  For years Tiger has been the most serious-minded man on the course – any course.  No smiling, little communication, no emotion until some injury, missed shot, or drama kicks in and sidelines him.  Something has changed.

I have reports from the practice rounds – made clear by the Par Three tournament footage – that Tiger is having fun. He’s loosened up.  He’s talking with fans.  He’s smiling.  He’s frolicking. “Tiger Woods was frolicking with his children as he showed up for the Par-3 Contest for the first time in 11 years.” If he keeps it up we may see him through the weekend.

Be like Mr. Woods.  Whatever you’re doing, have some fun with it.  The details usually take care of themselves.  The fun part will take care of you.

Happy Masters!

Slavery In America (Part I of III)

13th Amendment, 21st Century, America, Amerika, Augusta, Congress, Constitution, crime, criminal defense, drugs, Emancipation Proclamation, family, FBI, filth, freedom, friends, Georgia, Gerry Spence, government, human trafficking, libertarian, Liberty, Lincoln, Masters Tournament, Mississippi, pimps, police, Posse Comitatus, prostitution, Sallust, sex trafficking, slavery, society, States, The People, Thomas Jefferson, U.N.

This is the first in a series of articles about slavery in the United States; I anticipate three entries overall.  In Posse Comitatus, https://perrinlovett.wordpress.com/2013/02/20/posse-comitatus/ (one of my most popular articles despite its considerable length thank you), I briefly mentioned the evil institution of slavery as one of the major problems haunting the U.S. in the mid-nineteenth century.

These three articles are concerned with slavery in the U.S. in the 21st century.

If you’ve read Gerry Spence’s From Freedom to Slavery, http://www.amazon.com/From-Freedom-To-Slavery-Rebirth/dp/0312143427, you have an idea where I going with this.

At the very end of 1865 the 13th Amendment was added to the Constitution, forbidding the practice.  However, slavery has not gone away, it has only changed forms.  It is still as satanic a practice as ever.

The 13th Amendment reads (entirety): “Section 1. Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude, except as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted, shall exist within the United States, or any place subject to their jurisdiction.  Section 2. Congress shall have power to enforce this article by appropriate legislation.”

At the time of its adoption, the Amendment was a God-sent blessing for the former black slaves in the South (and the North).  President Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation (another act of Congress, without an act of Congress) only freed those slaves in the then rebelling southern States as territory was claimed by the federal army.  Its effect was sporadic and when the war concluded there was tremendous speculation whether the effects would last.  Congress reacted by swiftly presenting the Amendment to the States for ratification.  On December 6, 1865 Georgia’s vote finalized this process and the Amendment was proclaimed officially on December 18, 1865.  Mississippi has the dubious distinction of being the last State to ratify – in 1995, although the vote was not reported to Congress until this year, 2013!

History shows that after 1865, segregation and related laws essentially kept the practice alive against blacks, altered only slightly, for the better part of a century.  My focus here is not on history but on the present.  As I said, despite being forbidden, slavery is alive and is growing in the U.S.  It is no longer limited by race or color.  Modern slavery affects the majority of the American people.

In the future installments on this issue I will cover the growth of this new institution and what it means for the modern-day serfs.  The new and widespread form is more insidious than its predecessor.  Herein I will relate to you the existence of one particular kind of slavery which is more directly in line with the ancient practice.

First, you may be wondering how I could believe in the existence of vile servitude in this era?  You also may ponder, if what I say is true, why people tolerate it?

This first question I hope will be answered during the series.  Mr. Spence’s book is an excellent resource as well on this point.  The second was answered over 2000 years ago by a Roman named Sallust.  Sallust said, of people in general, “Only a few prefer liberty, the majority seek nothing more than fair masters.”  People do not merely tolerate oppression, many demand it.

Now, I want to talk about a group of people in our country today who have had their choice in the matter decided for them – by unfair, criminal masters.  These unfortunate few are virtually chained and have little chance for freedom without outside intervention.

I’m talking about the victims of “human trafficking.”  This is the term used for modern, actual slavery where people are bought and sold.  It takes many forms, including forced labor and forced organ “donation,” among others.  The type I will focus on is perhaps the most pervasive and morally offensive.  All forms are offensive but this one touches emotions harder than others and it is one I have seen closer than the others.  It is commonly known as “sex trafficking.”

Because of my profession I see many things others may miss.  For instance, I can usually spot a drug addict or a drug dealer.  I can also spot prostitutes.  Unfortunately, I do not have to look far for any of the three.  My weekly routine takes me through the huge intersection of a major Interstate highway (I-20) and a busy, commercialized secondary road.  The junction is only few miles from my house and is the center of what used to be a decent neighborhood.  I say “used to be” because of the horrible decline I have witnessed over the past few decades.  Again, I see (and hear about) things others normally do not.  To an outside observer the area would appear quite normal, prosperous even.  This is the same area where thousands of golf fans and patrons gather every spring for the Masters Tournament.

At first I began to notice an influx of seedy looking characters who walked the streets with seemingly nothing to do.  I’m not passing judgment, just making an observation.  They even established “camps” behind local businesses.  Last Thanksgiving I found one such man passed out drunk on the sidewalk of the afore-mentioned busy road.  At first I thought he was dead.

Then, at some point, I became aware of the working girls, their pimps, and the growth of the local drug trade.  The girls are the easiest to pick out.  Fairly pretty girls don’t constantly hang out at gas stations at all hours and ride off with random strangers.  The area is replete with motels which offer convenient bases of operations.  One finds the pimps loitering about the parking lots, usually drunk or high.

I have a great deal of sympathy for the girls.  Most of them look like nice, average, American young women.  It’s obvious they come from extreme difficulty and find it anew every day.  In addition to the threats of disease, violence, and arrest, they also face the prospect of unwittingly joining the deeper ranks of the sex trade.  There was an attractive blonde I saw almost every time I passed through for a year or so.  I never saw her after one Masters’ week; I suspect foul play.  Not all of our golf visitors are upstanding gentlemen.  The girls seem pitiful.  The pimps I tend to think of as rats and I have a difficult time keeping my vehicle from squashing them.

The local drug trade is centered in some of the motels, but more prominently in the various apartment complexes behind the motels.  I know this because I have defended several dealers in court and because of my routine dealings with local law enforcement.  The Sheriff’s Department has done a fairly good job of addressing the problem as far as it goes.  However, every bust seems to only stir the dealers and their clients around rather than eliminate them.

Yes, I am a libertarian (not a party Libertarian with a capital “L”) whose general disdain for government borders on anarchic.  Why then do I condemn drugs and prostitution?  I understand the old phrase, “You can’t legislate morality.”  This is true, as drugs and prostitution are currently illegal but continue nonetheless.  Remember this piece is not about the virtue or lack thereof concerning such laws but about victims of slavery.  I, as a freedom lover, do not support drug and other repressive criminal laws.  As a sane man though, I do not support dangerous practices and cultural degeneracy.  Sometimes one bad thing leads to another, maybe worse.  The solution, if it is to be found, is societal.  It rests with the people, not the government.

At any rate, this emerging hotbed of local vice has given rise to a worse and truly criminal element.  Most local people are oblivious to the fact this particular section of metro Augusta, Georgia is, or was, a major center in the sex slave trade.  I know this also from my work.  Local and state authorities, along with the FBI conducted an operation to eliminate the problem a few years ago.  I am not sure if they were successful; these rings tend to be highly mobile and are used to playing cat and mouse with the police.

The trade is run by disgusting filth that make the average rodent-pimps seem pious by comparison.  They prey on local girls with problems – drug addicts, prostitutes, run-aways, etc.  They also kidnap and import girls from places like Asia and Eastern Europe.  It is a global problem which even the useless at best, craven at worst U.N. has condemned.  Some of the victims are really sold to “owners” while others are forced to work in exploitative fashion in various ignoble jobs.

My direct knowledge of the matter as it is locally connected comes, again, from my legal work.  One of my previous clients was caught by the FBI (mistakenly) during the crackdown.  He had no part in the targeted operation but was participating in a “non-crime” in the wrong place at the worst possible time.  He was turned over to the Sheriff for misdemeanor prosecution.  Given his pathetic plight and the excellence of his lawyer, the poor fellow was set free with no record of conviction.

The client may have fared well (if embarrassingly) in court, but he must still live with himself and those around him.  His non-crime would have terrible implications for his family, if discovered, and he was truly demoralized about the entire ordeal.  I really believe he will never be in this situation again; I pray he is at peace now.  If you know someone with such a problem, stand up and help.

That is what I mean about The People taking control and care of their lives.  Drug abuse and other problems can be halted if detected early by friends and family.  Of course, in Amerika today, many of us don’t really know our friends that well and families are becoming dis-jointed relics of a bygone era.  Only through individual actions can we hope to fix these problems, We the People.

The people should also push law enforcement to go after real criminals, like sex traffickers (and murderers, arsonists, bansters, and politicians), and stop harassing everyone else.  Unfortunately, as I fear I will convey in the next few segments, and to paraphrase Thomas Jefferson (ironically, a slave owner himself), the people are often poor guardians of their own freedom.

The next two installments will deal with systematic slavery which has nearly all of in its grip.  Get ready to get angry.
