The Commercial Treatment

Coronavirus, flying, idiots, travel

Flying commercial hasn’t been fun in nearly twenty years. I avoid it at almost all costs. Thanks, globos! Anyway, a couple in the frozen north found out the extremes that idiots will go to in order to make it even more uncomfortable.

A FAMILY of five say they were kicked off a plane just before takeoff over fears their coughing toddler could be infected with coronavirus.

Canadian Emmanuel Faug, his wife Clémentine Ferraton and their three kids boarded a flight from Quebec City to Paris on February 23.

However, it’s been reported fellow passengers then asked Air Transat cabin crew to question the family over 21-month-old Lila’s coughing.

Quebec to Paris – that’s problematic. Can’t drive it in a car. Boats take way too long. And – I’ve checked – a really nice charter to France runs around $80,000 – each way. For those tempted to fly internationally with the commoners, best have your paying coughing papers on hand. Had I been Faug, I might have called the police and reported that, just maybe to me, some of the other passengers looked and acted a lot like terrorists. Uh, for saaaafety and so forth.

Just Buttons and Levers: Noticing Something

Something from the recent news caught my wayward eye.

You’ve no doubt heard about the tragically deranged man in Seattle who managed to steal the Q400 and do loops, with a fighter escort, before ending it all on a remote island.

In one news story I saw something suspicious: “Once the cockpit is entered, no keys are required to start the aircraft. Instead, a series of switches and levers must be pulled in a particular sequence to unlock the controls.”

“Switches and levers” sounds a lot like this from another recently attempted ariel joyride: “An affidavit says Scott told Texarkana police, who responded to reports of a man seen jumping an airport fence, that he didn’t think there was much more to flying than pushing buttons and pulling levers.”

I’m not a licensed pilot but I have taken flight lessons and I have flown small planes before. Believe it or not, this sequence of buttons and levers really is all it takes to fly – a very complicated sequence, one requiring constant attention and application of skill. It’s a level of skill completely beyond most people. The average American can barely drive a car. A plane is outside the question.

That’s why the dope in TX had no chance of getting his aircraft off the ground. And, it makes the guy in Seattle’s performance all the more amazing.

What I’m saying is that this should be a non-issue. But something warns me it’s on someone’s radar. The WSJ warns of “cracks in airport security.” I feel or sense the opportunity of more needless government intrusion. Perhaps this is something for the general aviators among you to keep an eye on. One more chance to stamp out freedom? Or a crazy coincidence?

Hmm.

Fly The Friendly Rails?

The concept of a “flying train” is floated in France.

I like this (yes, Perrin likes some tech) because it’s an interesting multi-use and it could possibly prevent crash fatalities. The tube will likely be made from light composite. In the event of a certain crash, the tube fuselage could detach from the wing rig and parachute down safely. That’s my idea; don’t necessarily look for it.

Interesting.

flying, George Carlin, government, regulation

This could be the most amazing story of the week. The federal empire regulates almost everything. Everything. Including measurements and sizes. They regulate bank deposits. And bullet calibers. And rural telephone lines. And who flys what over other countries. And the volume of toilet tanks. And “short” lobsters (whom, I think, prefer to be called “little” lobsters…).

With all this regulatin’, it’s a wonder that they are bowing out of the opportunity to regulate airline seat sizes. Not their problem, they say…

Cramped cabins, knocked knees, aggrieved elbows: all real problems for today’s flyers. But the Federal Aviation Administration has said they aren’t its problems — announcing Tuesday that it will not regulate airline seat size and legroom.

The decision came in the form of a letter responding to a lawsuit brought by the group Flyers Rights.

Flyers Rights said that shrinking seats, which it calls sardine seats, present an issue during emergency evacuations, especially as larger passengers could struggle to get out of the seats in a hurry.

After Passenger Dragging Last Year, Airlines Improved Performance

But the FAA said that current seat size is not a safety issue.

This is an outrage. You, Mr. John Q. Flyboy, should write to whatever snake-oil, con artist “represents” you in Congress!

Or, just laugh with Carlin:

blog, blog history, flying

Happy June! And thank you for helping make last month the best May in blog history.

The site’s fifth anniversary is just around the corner. I’m planning a little digital party and you happen to be invited. (No RSVP required).

And I just completed the first of several big summer road trips. (I declare that summer is here, now). Had a great time, thanks. A few things….

A. The drive was not-so-bad but could have been better. People, please re-acquaint yourselves with the art of driving a darned car. I did not encounter much of the idiocy I normally find across the two larger Southern states but I did see room for improvement.

B. Plan B. The next ten years or so should hold an inordinate amount of road travel for old Perrin. Or just travel. If you (not YOU, but others in general) refuse to learn to merge, speed up, not text, signal, etc., then I have a counter-plan.

This weekend I paid a little visit to my new friends at Atlas Aviation at TPF. I’ve made it a goal to complete something I started 20 years ago. I hope to have, by the time the sixth anniversary rolls around, at least a Sport License.

Atlas.

If and when that happens, you are free to slowly limp and weave down 75 in any manner you like; I’ll look and laugh from above, somewhere below 180 but nowhere near the mayhem.

Now, on with the summer time.

Or something.

I’ve held back on all of the steerage-class aviation disaster stories of late because there’s very little to say about them. If you’re an adult in America today, then you should know exactly what kind of torture you’re signing up for when you willingly climb aboard a commercial sardine can in the sky.

I even refrained from commenting on the terrible demise of Simon, the giant rabbit, the most famous bunny since Bugs. Today I actually looked into the story and found it more pitiful than I had imagined. Simon, alone of all the recent victims, has my sympathy. He did not independently agree to his fate.

R.I.P. Simon. USA Today.

All of this got me thinking about “accepting fate.” That is something one does not have to do – not without a fight. For more on that, please read James Altucher’s wisdom:

How To Start Over At 40 [or any age]

Remember: as bad as it might be, you’re not Simon.

Remember when flying was fun? Neither do I, unless it was far away in the excitement of childhood. Since 9/11 I have flown commercial as little as possible and not once in the past 5 years.

I’m not worried about “terrorists.” I worry about the government. All of the new security theater makes me feel quite unsafe. It’s a personal thing and it goes beyond my general disdain for a system that treats citizens like criminals and criminals like heroes.

Short trip? I drive. Long trip? I drive. Boston isn’t that far away. One thousand miles can be done in a day or so and, as a bonus, when I arrive I don’t have to rent a car!

Where was I? Tragedy, yes. Hundreds are dead following the crash of a Russian airliner in the Sinai. The sh!threads at ISIS have claimed responsibility. Terrorists and politicians always claim responsibility, true or no. The facts are few, the speculation wild.

Assuming the crash was actually terror related, our true friends at the TSSA have pondered even more acts in their play pretend airport screening processes.

None of this will bother me as I cruise the mountains on I-81, good coffee, gun and cigar all at the ready. It does weigh on my libertine sensibility and common sense. And, I feel for the flying public, complacent as most may be. I also felt bad for the little pigs in the straw and twig houses.

The Fatherland Security crowd is touting new measures both “seen and unseen.” You will see the burly agent molest the pretty college girl at the metal detector. You won’t see his friends rummage through your bags in search of pawn-worthy merchandise.

A DHS official, who asked not to be identified because he’s not authorized to expand on the secretary’s statement, said the new measures would be phased in as quickly as possible.

“This is all within TSA’s capabilities, within their power, within their authorities and resources,” the official said.

…

“Obviously we could dial it all the way up and say you can’t bring anything at all in your carry-on, but that’s not workable, and it’s going to make everyone very angry,” the official said.

Not everyone would be angry. Sheep never seem angry. I wouldn’t be the least bit miffed, at the rest area outside of Jacksonville. As for the flyers, why not have them all travel bagless and nude? This would certainly reduce the likelihood of a bomb being brought onboard and it would make the co-eds much more accessible for groping.

19475_TSA_Frisks_Little_TerroristFight’n Tha Tarh-ists. Google.

Here’s the rub. This rank speculation centers on an incident involving a Russian, not American, plane in the Middle East, not the Midwest. It’s, for alarmist sake, being presupposed the work of ISIS. No real facts yet, if you recall. But, let us assume, for a moment, it’s all truth.

The facts about ISIS are known. That club was founded, funded, trained and supported by the CIA and other American alphabet outfits – all with your taxes. The wars in Iraq and Afghanistan having fizzled and the Banksters and the MIC needing new profits, ISIS was developed in order to stir the pots in places like Syria and Libya.

So, bases on our assumption, the TSSA is plotting more restrictions on you based on something done by the CIA. Tell me again of the wonders of government. This is a page straight out of Hitler’s playbook: a series of false flag operations to start wars and simultaneously subdue the home folk. It’s a proven plan.

My plan also works. The TSSA has yet, YET, to interrupt my weekend road trip to Winston-Salem. If and when they do, I advise them to bring ISIS along for support. They’ll need it.

On a completely unrelated note: this posting was field both by my demented imagination and failing intellect and by coffee and a Gurkha Reserve 6×60. What a great smoke! Smooth, strong and well constructed. The cigar set will appreciate my fortitude in this undertaking pre breakfast.

Cheers!
