college, Comics, education, France

I forgot to mention this when it happened a little while back: I have adjusted my big mandatory four daily comic strips. I switched out Get Fuzzy for Dustin. It’s now:

Garfield;

Pearls;

Dustin; and

Dilbert

Not that big a deal. I still read Fuzzy from time to time along with some others. It’s just that without any new strips in, what(?), a year or three, they were getting a bit old.

In other news, as a full-time meddler and part-time Francophile, I discovered – not at all to my surprise – that the annual tuition at a very good French state university costs about the same as, maybe even a little less than, my QUARTERLY tuition at UGA almost thirty years ago (ouch!). Yes, there are subsidies. They opted for an educated citizenry without a student loan usury crisis. Yet somehow they still manage to have long vacations, first-class highways, skyscrapers, GUNS (yes), nuclear-powered and armed warships, and a France that’s still, grabblers’ antics aside, almost 95% French. But hey, we got us freedom fries, right?!

Andover, books, decline, education, libraries, schools, society

Phillips Andover ran a piece to celebrate their centuries-old interest in books.

Take a gander at The Libraries of Andover. Look at the pictures; they tell a story.

1) The buildings get bigger and nicer as the years pass.

2) Per volume, there are fewer and fewer books. By 2019, they have vast open spaces, full of beanbags and model airplanes, with a small selection of titles strewn here and there.

3) The students used to look like students. Now, they look like a) they just rolled out of homeless shelters, b) they’re on spring break, or c) they’re ready to cruise the red light district.

Mind you, that this is ANDOVER, the nation’s preeminent private school. The pattern repeats at public “schools,” colleges, and community libraries across the country. B&N is a coffee shop with a toy store attached. This all rather angers someone who writes books. Nice pictures though.

Government School = Offering Children up to Moloch

Literally.

Over the past hundred years or so, a rabid cabal of feminists, queers, open and covert Satanists, and other degenerates have utterly destroyed education in the remains of America. One critical part of their program was to censor and remove any trace of Christianity. In God’s place, they erected idols to every evil imaginable. That wall of separation only stands between the people and the true Lord, not between them and third-rate agents of the devil.

A school in Steamboat Springs is under scrutiny after a parent reported an assignment in which students were required to recite sexually explicit and/or distasteful poetry that includes worship of the pagan deity Moloch as well as conveying the topic of “sexting” in society – which was assigned to eleventh grade students without parental consent.
Brett Cason, the father of 16-year-old Steamboat Springs High School student Skylar, reported the content his daughter was being taught in her “Music Literature” class to the school’s administration after being exasperated upon discovering the assignment for himself, according to Fox News.

The teacher himself, Ryan Ayala, formally apologized to the offended parents for composing his lesson plan around Allen Ginsberg’s poem “Howl,” acknowledging the fact that it was the “most offensive” coursework covered in his class – where students were instructed to “fill in blanks” of censored poems, including phrases such as “f***ed in the a**” and “c**t” as well as other lewd language.

…

“We do believe that what occurred this fall was simply an oversight as a result of not understanding the policy,” Meeks wrote. “We regret if members of our community were offended.”

The policy? Don’t be so obvious as to get caught. Not that any of the simpleton parents really care, even if a few were gifted with that greatest of Amerikan virtues, being “offended.” Notice, in the story, the constant hand-wringing over the sexting and the #MeToo? That’s bad enough, even as the kids live it every single day. But the real crime that none seemed that concerned with is the passive acceptance of the Canaanite fire god who eats children – in a school dedicated to banning religion.

And, what will the good people do about all of this? Why the same thing they always do about everything – nothing.

Someone wrote a book full of (fictional) incidents like this.

America, China, education, Michael Snyder, stupid

Michael Snyder picks up where Dr. Williams left off – Chinese students are 4 grade-levels ahead of their pitiful Amerikan counterparts. And,

We were once a great light to the rest of the world, but today a large chunk of our population can barely read, write, speak or function in society. Just consider the following numbers…

#1 One recent survey found that 74 percent of Americans don’t even know how many amendments are in the Bill of Rights.

#2 An earlier survey discovered that 37 percent of Americans cannot name a single right protected by the First Amendment.

#3 Shockingly, only 26 percent of Americans can name all three branches of government.

#4 During the 2016 election, more than 40 percent of Americans did not know who was running for vice-president from either of the major parties.

#5 North Carolina is considering passing a law which would “mean only scores lower than 39 percent would qualify for an F grade” in North Carolina public schools.

#6 30 years ago, the United States awarded more high school diplomas than anyone in the world. Today, we have fallen to 36th place.

#7 According to the Pentagon, 71 percent of our young adults are ineligible to serve in the U.S. military because they are either too dumb, too fat or have a criminal background.

#8 For the very first time, Americans are more likely to die from an opioid overdose than they are in a car accident.

#9 One study discovered that one-third of all American teenagers haven’t read a single book in the past year.

#10 A recent survey found that 45 percent of U.S. teenagers are online “almost constantly”.

#11 Today, the average American spends 86 hours a month using a smartphone.

#12 Overall, the average U.S. adult “logs 6 hours, 43 minutes of total screen time daily”.

#13 In more than half of all U.S. states, the highest paid public employee in the state is a football coach.

#14 During one seven day period last summer, a total of 16,000 official complaints about human feces were submitted to the city of San Francisco. And apparently the problem is very real because one investigation found 300 piles of human feces on the streets of downtown San Francisco.

#15 Every 24 hours, more than a third of all Americans eat fast food.

#16 Less than half of all Americans know which country used atomic bombs at the end of World War II.

#17 Even though we fought a war in Iraq for eight long years, 6 out of 10 young adults cannot find Iraq on a map of the Middle East. And that same survey found that 75 percent of our young adults cannot locate Israel.

#18 Today, the average college freshman in the United States reads at a 7th grade level.

Are you convinced yet?

As a society, we have become exceedingly “dumbed down”, and we can even see this at the highest levels of our government. Just take a look at some of the people we have representing us in Congress. If George Washington, John Adams and Thomas Jefferson were alive today, what do you think that they would make of our current crop of politicians?

When our founders spoke, their language was so elegant. But of course we couldn’t have politicians speak to us that way today because nobody would be able to understand what they were saying.

Our society is literally in a death spiral, but nobody seems to have a way to stop it.

Educating our children properly is one of the most basic things that needs to be addressed, but unfortunately the left has total control of our public schools now, and that means that there is no hope of a major turnaround any time soon.

In fact, there is no hope of a turnaround, now or later. Only Dr. Ironsides has the solution.

UPDATE: I looked through the cited survey and found it riddled with global-speak. Still, if even the deliberate system’s metrics show a problem, there’s a problem.

More and More Stats on Education Fraud

Academically Adrift, college, education, fraud, Walter Williams

Dr. Williams has them as usual.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, in 2016, only 37% of white high school graduates tested as college-ready, but colleges admitted 70% of them. Roughly 17% of black high school graduates tested as college-ready, but colleges admitted 58% of them. A 2018 Hechinger Report found, “More than four in 10 college students end up in developmental math and English classes at an annual cost of approximately $7 billion, and many of them have a worse chance of eventually graduating than if they went straight into college-level classes.”

According to the National Conference of State Legislatures, “when considering all first-time undergraduates, studies have found anywhere from 28 percent to 40 percent of students enroll in at least one remedial course. When looking at only community college students, several studies have found remediation rates surpassing 50 percent.” Only 25% of students who took the ACT in 2012 met the test’s readiness benchmarks in all four subjects (English, reading, math and science).

It’s clear that high schools confer diplomas that attest that a student can read, write and do math at a 12th-grade level when, in fact, most cannot. That means most high diplomas represent fraudulent documents. But when high school graduates enter college, what happens? To get a hint, we can turn to an article by Craig E. Klafter, “Good Grieve! America’s Grade Inflation Culture,” published in the Fall 2019 edition of Academic Questions. In 1940, only 15% of all grades awarded were A’s. By 2018, the average grade point average at some of the nation’s leading colleges was A-minus. For example, the average GPA at Brown University (3.75), Stanford (3.68), Harvard College (3.63), Yale University (3.63), Columbia University (3.6), University of California, Berkeley (3.59).

The falling standards witnessed at our primary and secondary levels are becoming increasingly the case at tertiary levels. “Academically Adrift: Limited Learning on College Campuses” is a study conducted by Professors Richard Arum and Josipa Roksa. They found that 45% of 2,300 students at 24 colleges showed no significant improvement in “critical thinking, complex reasoning and writing by the end of their sophomore years.”

We’ve come to the point where that diploma or degree (even from Harvard) is just a piece of paper.

That Book he mentioned:

Key Findings

  • In terms of undergraduate learning, higher education is “academically adrift.” While higher education is expected to accomplish many tasks, existing organizational cultures and practices too often do not prioritize undergraduate learning. Large numbers of college students report that they spend a very limited amount of time studying; they enroll in courses that do not require either substantial reading or writing assignments; they interact with their professors outside of college classrooms rarely, if ever; and they define and understand their college experiences as focused more on social than on academic development. Faculty and administrators, working to meet multiple and at times competing demands, rarely focus on improving instruction and demonstrating gains in student learning.
  • Gains in student performance are disturbingly low—a pattern of limited learning is prevalent in contemporary higher education. On average, gains in critical thinking, complex reasoning, and writing skills (i.e., general collegiate skills) during the first two years of college are either exceedingly small or empirically non-existent for a large proportion of students. Forty-five percent of our students did not demonstrate any significant improvement in CLA performance during the first two years of college.
  • Learning in higher education is characterized by persisting and/or growing inequality. There are significant differences in critical thinking, complex reasoning and writing skills across students from different family backgrounds and racial/ethnic groups. More importantly, students not only enter college unequal; but inequalities tend to persist, or in the case of African American students, increase during students’ enrollment in college.
  • There is notable variation in experiences and outcomes across institutions. While the average trends indicate that students are embedded in colleges where very limited academic demands are placed on them and limited learning occurs in general during the first two years of college, there is notable variation across students, and particularly across institutions. Students attending certain institutions have more beneficial college experiences (in terms of reading/writing requirements, meeting with faculty, time use, etc.) and demonstrate significantly higher gains in critical thinking, complex reasoning and writing skills over time. We focus in particular on examining unique college experiences and significantly more encouraging learning trajectories of students attending highly selective institutions.

college, education, liberals, white men

A few years ago, I read that the number of colleges in America, way too inflated, was going to fall by about a third within ten years. It’s well underway. The fly-by-night$ are dying all over. Now, cursed by their own stupidity, the smaller liberal colleges decline too.

Liberal arts colleges running out of woke white men?

November 25, 2019by philg

The financial struggles of New England liberal arts colleges have been in the news lately. “Marlboro planning to give campus and endowment to Emerson College” describes the end of 73 years of operation in Southern Vermont. “Can small liberal arts colleges survive the next decade?” (Christian Science Monitor)

A friend who has worked at the highest levels of college governance said that these bastions of righteousness in which white males are blamed for most things are having difficulty recruiting white males. Why does that matter? “Once the men stop attending,” he noted, “then women don’t want to enroll.”

Get woke, go broke. Good on ya, men.

The wise, but nameless SJWs of South Bend attempt the destruction of a finer school.

Activists at the University of Notre Dame are demanding a radical transformation of school policies and curriculum to purportedly cater to the desires of non-white, LGBT, and female students.

A student group calling itself “End Hate at ND” has issued a list of demands and has held multiple campus protests in an attempt to bring about those changes.

Included in the list are calls to “Decolonize Academia” and “Implement Diversity Training In Each Dorm.”

“No course or program of study should have a view limited to white, western, and/or male voices,” the group says. “We demand that people who are of Color, Indigenous, Black, queer, or not male are represented in the authorship of at least half course and major required readings. Diversifying the canon helps eliminate the violence of only privileging white scholarship.”

Violence? Eliminate the white male scholarship, and you eliminate the University. And, the West. That, one supposes, is the goal. Maybe these rats should shun other white violence, like electricity, medicine, cars, computers, and making demands. I demand they do so – go protest in the woods somewhere.

My niece, one of them, attends ND. At Christmas, if I remember (probably won’t), I’ll have to ask her how they razz and ridicule the mental snowflakes.

Today’s Affairs National: NEA Headlines (and More!)

Hello, dearest Piedmont Chronicles readers! I understand y’all had an election up the C-Town way. Congratulations. Or, I’m so sorry. Whatever. Our own M.B. McCart does a better job promoting and defending the local scene than anyone I know of in the whole country. (And, I know like four or five folks!) At the conclusion of one of his stellar local political pieces last week, the comment was made, “Seems TPC,and Brooks et al is the kiss of death to politicians.” Thanks, Bub! If that’s true, then for my part, I hereby endorse all of them. Sic the Goat Man on ‘em.

The NEA! That stands for the National Education Association (yes, this is another ed column). The NEA, according to its website, and this is an exact quote, is: “the nation’s largest professional grifter organization, committed to advancing the cause of communism in Amerika.” Exact quote. They also run a news site, NEA-Today! I thought it would be a hoot to see what the NEA is doing Today, “today” being Sunday, November 10th for examination purposes. Herein, I make short notes about their headlines. Shall we?

“Student Performers Explore Impact of School Segregation: Through theater, young people help amplify the conversation around the tough topics of race and segregation and inequality.”

Yes! Amplify the inequality for all. A conversation about something ended sixty years ago. And, all the stats I constantly post prove just how effective the scheme works. Bravo!

“Building Relationships With Colleagues and Students in a High-Tech World: How can we combine technology and one-on-one interactions in a way that engages us and our students?”

Heads down in those screens is a great way to alienate interactions while also avoiding books. Digital segregation!

Rig For Red: Education Edition

A Note: Perrin went out carousing late Halloween evening, followed by a book launch dinner party thing Friday night, followed by a Saturday meeting of the Old Timer’s Cigar Club. The proverbial truck has runneth him over and he may have encountered the cold bug. Therefore, quality may be affected. Deal with it.

“Q” is back and advising of pre-battle stations tactical alerts, whatever that might mean. From whence I derived my title. Amidst all the mysterious, cryptic stuff, like “Rig for Red,” I am aware of two subjects about which the anons were dead right: a real-time satellite/Atlantic cable blackout, which I independently verified through multiple intel sources, and; a major shift in the K-12 teaching of Twentieth-Century history, which I myself verified. This column has nothing else to do with Q, rather being concerned with the K-12 “education” as provided by America’s public schools.

Every time I write one of these academic missives, I conduct a minimal amount of research. Based on my inquiries to The GOOGLE, I usually get results like these:

(American Conservative) Liberal Bias Starts Long Before College

(American Conservative) Should Conservatives leave Public Schools?

Unfortunately, those being AC pieces, they always immediately devolve into quotes from charlatans like Dennis Prager or drug addicts like Jordan Peterson. And they wonder why they have failed to conserve anything – the schools least of all. Anyway, the answer to that second title is a resounding “Yes.” Why? Well, there’s no need to take the word of neo-Trotskyites or tearful meth heads. The system itself does an alarmingly good job of self exposure.

Every single year, the stats come out by the dump truck loads. For instance, we have the US DOE [SIC] NCES 2019 Condition of Education report. (See also: 2018’s report).

Per this year’s NCES indictment, the average public school district spends approximately $12,800 per year, per student. That’s the second highest in the world, behind Norway’s $15,000 figure. The OECD average is about $9,500; many countries spend considerably less. (Note: Georgia, in general, spends below both the US and the OECD averages).

You’re really getting your money’s worth, let me tell you. Check this out:

Reading proficiency: 4th Grade – 37%, 8th Grade – 36%, 12th Grade – 37%.

Math proficiency: 4th Grade – 40%, 8th Grade – 34%, 12th Grade – 25%.

Science proficiency: 4th Grade – 38%, 8th Grade – 22%, 12th Grade – 34%.

White Toxicity in the Air: Algebra is Racist

Get your kids ut of the failed government schools! The Daily Caller has an excellent omnibus article on the rot:

Local school systems across the country are proposing radical changes in the name of reducing demographic-based achievement gaps.

Parents who support Democrats at the federal level have recoiled at what they view as identity politics gone too far.

School systems in Washington state, Maryland, New York, Minnesota and Virginia are among those where radical agendas have become a flash point in schools, with parents fearing their children’s educations will suffer.

None of this is new or surprising unless you’re a boomer just awakened from your g-g-generational slumber. But, it’s a good running review. Read all about the “nonbinaries,” the white toxicity in the air, and those fairly radical atheists. Remember that all of these educrats and vultures, who run the schools, are themselves either mentally retarded, mentally ill, or purely evil.
