Nothing is safe. The SJWs have invaded or conquered the AP Style Manual:

Stop saying offensive words.

That’s what the Associated Press (AP) is telling writers.

You see, the AP puts out a stylebook every year that includes universal guidelines for stylistic matters like punctuation, capitalization, and even word choice.

In a recent version, the AP encouraged writers to not use words such as “pro-life,” “migrant,” “refugee,” “Islamist,” and “terrorist.”

It’s completely ludicrous. Yet, sadly, it’s a sign of the times.

Writers aren’t all that fond of being bossed around and with good reason. Disrespect to the AP, following their suggestions, how would one espouse a pro-life opinion about migrants, not necessarily “refugees,” some of whom are Islamist terrorists??? Remember when liberals cared about free speech? Neither do I.

Newspeak, anyone? No thanks.

I have an older AP book (never felt the need to update annually). It sits pretty next to Black’s, Webster’s, Strunk and White, Brown’s, and Bartlett’s – all mostly unused.

Not that I have style, but I’ve always favored the HBB and Chicago guides. They also collect dust with a bunch of other books no one else is interested in.

One hopes for scant interest in the PC BS from the AP.

As usual I am, now, plugging through several books, some I’ve mentioned before. Some may be reviewed here and at Amazon. One which definitely will (eventually) is The Last Closet by Moria Greyland, Castalia, 12/12/17.

51HbktWZQoL

Castalia/Amazon.

It’s a 5-star book but my recommendation is qualified. For full “enjoyment” one requires, I think: a slightly higher IQ; an interest in the darkness of society (very dark), and; a cast iron stomach. The subject matter is horrendous, as related first-hand by a victim. Not going into details yet but this book covers some of the worst evil imaginable.

A side affect is that, as sometimes happens, this book has prompted me to reread another, older book. In this case: Dracula by Bram Stoker. The Last Closet, non-fiction, is vastly darker, scarier, making Harker’s expedition seem like a run-of-the-mill real estate closing.

Speaking of dark … a new Disney SJW Star Wars movie is in theaters. This is the first one that I am not thrilled about seeing. I will see it because: 1) Star Wars, and 2) 40 years of devotion. I do not like the look and feel of the reviews and spoilers I read. The Last Jedi may be the last Star Wars movie for me. Not sure until I see it. You’ll hear back, then.

And, yes, there are those other reviews I said were coming. Just you wait. BBQ a porg to pass the time.

Out today and I just delved into my copy. Review forthcoming.

Read this book:

SJWs Always Double Down: Anticipating the Thought Police

41guOiSs5GL

Vox Day/Castalia House/Amazon.

If you’re into this sort of thing, it’s the best selling political philosophy book out there – the second law of SJWs explained.

Just breezed through Ivan Throne’s powerful forward and the hilarious yet chilling chapter one.

Every intelligent adult in America should read this book. I was going to say “every straight white man in America” but even the others need it – because anyone can become a target in the culture war. For my fellow SWMs: read it and heed it.

More on this later.

PS: If you’re following the Las Vegas shooting, particularly if you’re in lockstep behind the official government/media narrative, know that that just changed, significantly. Immediately change what you think and say about it or the SJWs will call you a crazy conspiracy theorist or worse.

Fat and Stupid: Can We Rebuild American Education and Culture?

America, Anthony Esolen, book review, books, culture, education, society, Vox Day

Americans aren’t just increasingly fat; they’re increasingly stupid.

Today, Vox Day noted the decline in the average college IQ over the past six decades. We’re collectively down 12.3 points, almost a whole SD. It kind of matters. Smaller brains and larger waistlines so not make for a good or viable trend.

I also read a review of sorts by Chris Sullivan of Anthony Esolen’s Out of the Ashes: Rebuilding American Culture. Esolen may have some answers for the academic decline and more.

Anthony Esolen, a professor at Thomas More College of the Liberal Arts in Merrimack, New Hampshire and recently of Providence College, Rhode Island, has written a stinging critique of modern education and American society in general titled Out Of The Ashes: Rebuilding American Culture published by Regnery Publishers, 2017.

It’s a short book – 203 pages – but contains much wise social commentary and observations on everything wrong with American education, if there’s any such thing. Esolen is not one to beat around the bush. If you don’t agree with him it isn’t because he is opaque. For instance, chapter one is titled, Giving Things Their Proper Names: The Restoration Of Truth Telling. It is divided into several sections with their own headings, one of which is Are We a World of Liars?

“In a word, yes.

…

It was the education angle and the fact of Thomas Moore College that caught my attention. TMC may be the best deal in the country for affordable, quality higher education, Catholic or otherwise. I want my daughter to consider the school.

Anyway, I bought a copy on Kindle this morning. I’m planning to start reading it tonight. If warranted, and time allowing, I’ll post a review here and at Amazon. Chapter Four is: Man by Nature Desires to Know: Rebuilding the College.

That’s important to me and should be to all Americans. Most of our “schools” have become anti-intellectual, places where knowing is the last thing desired.

Looks good from my cursory overview. I’ll let you know.

Order your copy HERE.

A Review of The LawDog Files

Amazon, book review, books, Castalia House, Humor, LawDog, The LawDog Files, Vox Day

Vox asked for reader reviews of Castalia’s new release, The LawDog Files, by LawDog. I volunteered and My God! I’m glad I did. My Amazon review:

LawDog leads the reader on a fantastic and hilarious journey through human psychology, the realities of rural Texas, and the ups and downs of LEO life.

Going into the book I was uncertain what to expect. I don’t think I’d every heard of the author before (my shame). He’s much more than a Sheriff’s Deputy – a humorist of great eloquence and adroitness. Think of stories by Jerry Clower, Ray Stephens, Andy Griffith, maybe Fred Reed; then, think about small town policing. That’s the nature of The Files.

I’ve been in Texas a few times but never trekked into Bugscuffle. It’s the kind of sleepy little town where the darndest things happen, only to be publicly forgotten and thereafter only retold by old men (in boring fashion). Except that, here, LawDog captures the essence of the area, its people, and the demands of law enforcement, melding them out of keen memory and superb wit.

You’ll love this book if: you have ever worked in or around law enforcement; you’re from Texas, the South, or anywhere rural; you fondly remember the “good old days” from a past America, or; if you just like to laugh. Thrill to: an amorous armadillo, a murderous animatronic Santa Claus, a Dick Cheney-style pheasant (quail??) hunt, and perps appropriately referred to as “critters.”

The layout was easy-going (for an ebook) – a straight flow from one funny tale to the next – as well designed as written. I found one drawback, due entirely to the subject matter and exposition. My reading slowed as I “lived out” the files in my head. And that’s as fun a literary problem as one can have.

I loved it! Do yourself a favor and buy The LawDog Files today. Many thanks to LawDog for serving on the thin blue line and then, again, with the fine lines of his pen.

BUY IT TODAY

You’ll love it!

books, J.R.R. Tolkien, Kindle

Just got my first edition print of Beren and Luthien by J.R.R. Tolkien. Well, it’s a first edition for Kindle – my first Tolkien on an electronic format. It seems the pitiful toy and coffee bookstore I went to, their whole chain, and the publisher are out of hardcover prints already (released June 1st). How many decades of Tolkien bestseller experience does Houghton have??? Anyway, I could have consulted Amazon and express shipped one (if available) but I wanted it immediately – thus, Kindle:

nimbus-image-1497055597269

Houghton Mifflin / Tolkien Estate / Christopher Tolkien / Alan Lee.

As I mentioned at the beginning of the year:

Beren and Luthien is the great love story of the legendarium. It tells the tale of Beren, a mortal Man, and Luthien, an Elvish princess – one of only three such “mixed” marriages in Middle Earth. They undertake the most daring quest in the long history of that world.

Some of you have read perhaps the short version of the story in the Silmarillion. From that work also came The Children of Hurin, which was released ten years prior to B&L. Christopher Tolkien’s editing and narration skills have increased dramatically since 1977 (and I never shared the contemporary criticism of his work, then). This book will be excellent.

And it would also make for one of the best Tolkien movies imaginable. That is, if Peter “Ruin Everything Possible” Jackson is kept as far away as possible. A movie with something for everyone – date movie, chick flick, fantasy, action. Come to think of it, TCOH, Tolkien’s tragedy, would make a fine movie. No Jackson.

The B&L legend soundly defeats one of the major (unjust) claims of Tolkien detractors – that of a lack of romance. In that regard, the legend was so important to Tolkien that he had “Beren” and “Luthien” inscribed as nicknames on his and his wife’s tombstone. This is a romantic epic of the highest order, riddled through with adventure. Sauron even makes an appearance, in person and in voice.

I highly recommend this work when available. If you must buy just one novel this year, this should be the one. It will probably be mine.

Now, I sincerely hope Christopher is already at work completing the tales of Tuor and Idril.

It seems, from the Preface, that Christopher is hanging it up with this book. He points out he is 93. Perhaps the third and/or fourth generations will attack the other legends.

For now I’m looking forward to the release of a deluxe, boxed, collector’s edition to go with my collection. You can and should obtain yours: here and now:

Beren and Luthien (2017)

Please excuse me; wheels up for Beleriand.

Author Earnings, books, ebooks, English, publishing

If you’re thinking about writing a book, the time has never been better.

Authorearnings.com dug deep into some recent sales numbers and produced a detailed report. The information centers on sales of ebooks and printed copies in the five largest English-speaking countries: US, UK, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand.

These five nations have a combined population of over 450 million. And those people read books. Or at least they buy them. The most recent data show they collectively purchased over 1.6 billion books in the latest measureable year. That’s about 3.5 books per person per year.

nimbus-image-1494463958281

authorearnings.com.

Imagine if your book was one of the 3.5. No, you won’t get everyone to buy – not even close. But the sheer, staggering volume of sales is mind-boggling. This lays to rest the excuse that “there are already too many books out there.” Maybe there are but the people seem to want more.

And these are the five largest Anglo nations, not even the entirety of the English-speaking world. I do not know for certain but I suppose translations are pretty easy to obtain. That opens up the rest of the planet – the parts that read.

This is great food for literary sales thought. And it reminds me that I really need to crank out another volume … or ten.

Happy writing. Happy reading.

James, as usual, has some excellent points, ideas, and examples. He talks about getting out that best seller.

…

I’ve self-published many of my books, including my three best-selling books: “Choose Yourself“; “Reinvent Yourself“, and the “Choose Yourself Guide to Wealth“.

One person once wrote me, “Do you only self-publish because no publisher wants your books.”

I didn’t write back. He was mean! But I’ll answer here: No.

Maybe back in 2011 I didn’t want to go through the process (AGAIN) of begging a publisher to publish my 7th or 8th book.

I love self-publishing. I will tell you why. I hope you do it as well.

Why do I hope you do it? I don’t really know. Maybe you feel you need “permission” from editors, agents, peers, publishers, marketers, bookstores.

Maybe this is a love letter to my dear friend: you don’t need permission. You are special and worthy of love without it.

I’m going to list the reasons why I like to self-publish, how to get started on writing, and whether or not there is any negatives.

…

James’s encouragement and insight led me to the world of publishing after a decade or indecisiveness and procrastination. His ideas also reinvigorated this blog. (So, blame him…)

Speaking of blogging, etc. – does anyone of you have any experience with Patreon? I’m thinking about launching a page there. Any ideas? Comment here, FB, or email me. (And I’m looking for actual experience; if you have to Google the term, you know less than I do). Thanks!

More of a sneezing fit really. Big sneeze and then I felt fine. Until this morning. Only too late did I consult weather.com for the pollen count (its high).

Some years I have no allergy symptoms at all. Some years there’s a little here and there. And, then, some years it hits me all at once like a sledgehammer to the head. Guess what kind of year 2017 is. Yeah.

The good news is that I know this will be over fast. The better news is the antihistamines.

Anyway, why did I write this out. Well, I have several rants to get to. And I have several longer articles in the works. But all of that requires a clear head. That’s something I rarely have anyway and hay fever doesn’t help.

I’m not going to discard you like a used tissue (or 5). Before you go, please take a free PDF, a how-to project I wrote up a while back for Freedom Prepper, a tiny (FREE) e-book:

books, publishing, SJW

The traditional publishing industry has one foot in the grave and a battleship anchor around its neck. Now, they seek to drive off the last of their successful authors and resulting revenue streams – all in the name of … whatever it is SJWs want this afternoon. They hiring, many have already hired, Sensitivity Readers (a.k.a. Censors):

Before a book is published and released to the public, it’s passed through the hands (and eyes) of many people: an author’s friends and family, an agent and, of course, an editor.

These days, though, a book may get an additional check from an unusual source: a sensitivity reader, a person who, for a nominal fee, will scan the book for racist, sexist or otherwise offensive content. These readers give feedback based on self-ascribed areas of expertise such as “dealing with terminal illness,” “racial dynamics in Muslim communities within families” or “transgender issues.”

This is from a Chicago Tribune story. And the Tribune gets it all wrong from the start. The friends and family might (might) get to read a manuscript. But, where does one find a literary agent these days? I heard there were 2 left in New York. But they are both busy hunting for new employment. Agents are as common nowadays as bookstores.

The new stores, the editors, the publishers, and the printers are all together on the internet. A few clicks on the keyboard and a new book is approved, published, and on sale to 2 Billion people instantly. And for better royalties than the biggies ever paid.

Soon traditional publishers (a few university, technical, and niche presses exempted) will be confined to the museum of unnatural history. Perhaps their “sensitivity readers” will be a side exhibit. A curiosity.

This last, failing, and stupid trend is but another attempt at social justice warrioring by people who otherwise could never find gainful employment.

‘Racism”. “Dealing with illness”. “Transgender”. “Left-handed, midget, refugee points of view on socio-economic distribution of expenditures in education”. (I made that last one up…). All of these smack of the holier-than-thou censoring for which SJWs are infamous. Nothing shall be uttered (or thought) which defies the narrative (which changes with the breeze). Who the hell cares?

banned

Freedom to Read Foundation.

If a book is offensive, then it won’t sell. Or, maybe it will sell even better because it offends someone. No one is forced to buy or read it. Get over it. Some busybody out there has been offended by every word ever scribed.

The next illogical step wold be for the publishers to burn their own books at SJW tantrum rallies, blue-haired hippies at a Nazi bonfire of ignorant glee. They might as well burn their presses and offices too.

They’re on life support and they’re trying to plug their own plug. Let them.
