I’m taking a little break from my usual anarchist ramblings to update you, my beloved readers, on a wonderful development in the cigar world.

The other evening I stopped by Top Shelf Cigars in Evans/Martinez (Augusta), Georgia for a very special event.  Patrick’s cigars are available at better shops across the nation. 23 special shops nationwide were chosen for this inaugural rollout – being the best in Georgia and the Southeast, Russell’s place was a natural tour stop.

Patrick Vivalo, the namesake of Vivalo Cigars, graced Top Shelf with his electric presence and his fabulous smokes.

(Russell Wilder with Patrick Vivalo.)

As an added bonus Patrick’s dad, Bob, was on hand.  He recalled Patrick’s early years – the living room fire, the arrests, the drugs – no, wait, that was me.  Actually, this very personable fellow beamed with pride as he acknowledged his son’s achievements.

Patrick got his start in cigars working retail at JR’s in New Jersey.  He quickly progressed to Rocky Patel’s outfit in the early 2000s (then known as Indian Tabac).  Under Rocky’s tutelage he developed his own sense of flavor and integrity and blended some of the finest sticks in the industry.

A short while back he crafted his own personal blend as a matter of curiosity.  Sensing genius at work, someone demanded to try Patrick’s proprietary smokes.  A legend was born.  In March of this year Patrick launched his own label.

(I smoked a Gordo Maduro and loved it.  Look for these babies at your shop soon.)

“I have always waited for the day to do my own thing and the day is finally here,” said Vivalo to Halfwheel. “I just want to make great cigars for people to enjoy. After that, I don’t know much else to say except that I hope people enjoy my creations!”  Vivalo, quoted in HalfWheel (2015).  There are a “total of five vitolas (Vivalos), as the original Vivalo Serie Exclusivo Lonsdale (6 x 44) was joined by a 5 1/2 x belicoso, 4 7/8 x 50 robusto, 6 x 60 gordo and 5 1/2 x 54 robusto grande, all of which are sold in boxes of 20.”  HalfWheel, Id.

“The cigars are a blend of a Jalapa Colorado shade wrapper from Nicaragua, binder from Estelí, Nicaragua, and Nicaraguan filler from Estelí and Jalapa.” Id.  As I understand things, Rocky kindly allows assembly of these beauties at his Honduran facility.

“I believe with my passion, dedication and my attention to detail that I will succeed as a cigar maker. Again, I can’t express my gratitude enough towards those who have paved the way for me to be the person I am today.”  Vivalo, in The Cigar Authority (2015). The cigars speak for themselves.  Patrick’s humble yet excited demeanor (with his Dad cheerleading) speaks to his honest gratitude and excellent personality.  I think he will succeed  and I wish him the best.

(Patrick even has the humor to tolerate grinning, semi intoxicated bloggers.)

I did a short video interview with Patrick.  Should the technology gods smile on me, you may be able to view it some day.

Patrick blends ever size of cigar with a slightly different taste and experience; this is a nod to the great Cuban tradition.  He described the importance of the process:

Nine times out of ten, with the non-Cuban market, you could pick up a 38 ring-gauge, a 50 ring-gauge, and a 60 ring-gauge and the bigger you go the mellower you get.  The smaller ring-gauges are going to be more of your powerhouse.  I felt that blending each size to the specific ring-gauge and length really brings out the subtle nuances in each size.

– exclusive Vivalo interview with Perrin Lovett.

My Gordo was exceptionally smooth and even throughout with a very Cuban-like mellow, delicious flavor.  The stick drew perfectly and burned well with no touch-ups needed.  I was very impressed with this first effort.  A new line is under development.  If it is half of the original is, it will be a knockout.  Try one soon.

(The Top Shelf crew enjoying Vivalo’s magic and Russell’s usual hospitality.)

Former Mississippi State Baseball standout, Kent Daniel, described the Vivalo Robusto as one of his favorites.  His absolute favorite is Patrick’s Bellicoso.  “We are very proud of [Patrick] for bringing his blends to Martinez, Georgia,” Daniel said as he puffed away on the Robusto.

If you’re in Augusta, visit Top Shelf; tell them Perrin sent you.  If you’re at any decent shop, look for a Vivalo.  Your good taste will set you apart.

As a post script, I am now friends with Emma Viktorsson, of Cigar Fantasia.  Emma is a veritable Swedish Valkyrie – far better looking than young Vivalo (sorry, Patrick, she is). If you’re familiar with Jose Blanco and Senorial Cigars, you probably know her work.  Should I make a press appearance at the IPCPR International show in New Orleans next month I intend to interview her (or at least drool and stutter politely). Time will tell.

Rub a Dub Nub: Small Cigar, Big Smoke

Nub: 3) “a lump or small piece.”

Nub by Oliva: “Rather than wait for a cigar to develop and evolve, which typically occurs an inch to two inches in, the idea behind Oliva’s Nub was to specifically blend it to hit its sweet spot right off the bat and remain at its peak right through to the end. Each size is short and stout in stature.”

A few evenings ago I was working digitally at my favorite hangout of all time – Top Shelf Cigars.  In walks Mike Walters of the Oliva Company (Family).  Mike offered me my choice of delectable smokes, freebies from the great maker.  Note: Cigar Representatives always frequent good shops; they present their wares to regulars as a gesture of goodwill and as a research tool (another benefit of the hobby!).  Running short on time I chose a Nub, the little brand of which I have had some prior experience – all positive. The Nub: short, sweet and to the point.  This stick was in stark contrast to the excellent but enormous titan of a cigar I last reviewed.

IMG_20150527_113909685

(This may be larger than the actual cigar.)

IMG_20150527_114009040

(It’s a business card size smoke.  Visit, call or email Russell for details.)

The Camaroon or Maduro Nub delivers an excellent experience, rich with taste for those in a hurry.  Under normal conditions it is good for maybe 30 to 45 minutes of enjoyment.  It’s perfect for the lunch hour break.

Surprisingly, given its diminutive size, the little fellow packs a punch.  Born in Nicaragua this gem is (in those blends I noted) rich, earthy and, perhaps, a little woody.  I don’t write for Aficionado so I am unable to find notes of coffee, pencil eraser, or chocolate raspberry liquorice. None-the-less, the Nub is an outstanding choice.  A lighter blend makes an excellent first cigar as it is not overpowering nor bitter.

As the Oliva site says, it cuts to the chase of the smoke – straight to the good flavors that usually take a minute or two to develop.

Remember the Nub.  Just because you’re short on time doesn’t mean you must be short on smoke.

When last you read I promised a big story by hook or by crook.  Well, it has to be by crook.  Or, maybe by hook.  Not sure.  Anyway, all you get for now is a short preview. I’m busy revising, editing and discussing movie rights.  Seriously, it is a comparative political piece about Tolkien’s Numenor and America.  Here goes:

This essay concerns the rising peace and glory and downfall of Tolkien’s Numenor as compared to the rise and fall of republican America…

…the author is aware the details and history of Numenor are both idyllic and fictional. There are, however, many similarities between that mythical tale and the, albeit romantic, history of the great republic of the United States of America. Much of what we remember of America’s founding and glory is largely fictionalized as well. Thus, this short work is philosophical and perhaps even religious in nature.

…the story of the downfall of Numenor, the ancient island home of the “Men of the West” of Tolkien’s Arda, the Edain/Dunedain, is included at the end of the Silmarillion book but are separate from and independent of the story of the Silmarillion – so says Christopher Tolkien,  Silmarillion, Forward…

First I will set up the historical and physical commonalities of the two subject Nations. My good readers are, no doubt, steeped in the history and geography of America. Many are familiar with Tolkien and Middle Earth (at least and insofar as The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings are concerned, thank you, Peter Jackson). Numenor and the allegedly murky (a slanderous allegation) Silmarillion might require additional explanation…

That’s all for now.  The real thing is coming soon.

One more thing!  Frank the Frog, in anticipation of his possible election bid, will shortly hereafter release his autobiography, Frankly Speaking.  Frank will share his insight on foreign policy, dispel rumors about his alleged firefly addiction, discuss growing up tough surrounded by hawks and snakes (perfect prep for politics), and much much more.  Get over to Amazon and reserve your first edition copy now.

Democracy in America: A Charming Children’s Story

Last week I mentioned that an election was coming.  I also presented my own favorite candidate – Frank the Frog.  Frank will not win and the election is in vain.  Vote if you care.  I don’t.

The Illustrious Barry Hussein El Islam Muhammad Obama the Magnificent has finished the job begun by his predecessors – the country is in ruins.  For his replacement the Democrats have dug to the very bottom of the bag of wrinkled has-beens, to one Hillary Clinton, the wife of “good times Bill, the slickster.”

The Republicans have other, similar ideas.  They would foist upon the people yet a third member of the Bush clan.  Obviously, the people are okay with two families maintaining a grip on national power for two or three or five decades.  Their business.  Is there some national obsession with rats and roaches of which I am not completely aware?

In Iowa the Republicans “think they must soften their image and expand their appeal in particular to women and Latino voters.”  I assume women and Latinos enjoy constant war, perpetual debt and crushing loads of government buffoonery.  Again, their business.

However, down in South Carolina, the GOP still caters to the Budweiser and NASCAR crowd.  There, apparently, women and Latinos are still at odds.  A woman, who had once been a Democrat, shouted, “People are coming in this country across the borders like rats and roaches in the woodpile! … The audience applauded.  She complained that states were registering people to vote and failing to ‘check them out.’ ‘We’ve got to get control,'” she bellowed while munching on a Twinkie.

“You would think that after all this time conservative conference planners would have learned the one most important lesson about conservative conferences: Never let the audience speak. Ever.”  They don’t learn.  No-one learns.  Ten thousand years of history demonstrate unequivocally than government does not work.  Democrats love it. Republicans still love it.  The people hoot and holler like chimps in a cage.

Capture

(Large gathering of fat, illiterate white people.  Google.)

The universal message provided by the freedom-loving Republican candidates may be summarized as follows: more war!; Mexicans bad!; Muslims bad!; Democrats bad!; give taxes to banksters!; huff; puff.

472763392

(Bubba believes in the flag.  Google/Getty.)

Such fairy tales are humorous but foolish when taken seriously.  If the Democrats false egalitarianism had been real thirty years ago things might be better today.  If flag-worshipping Republicans actually had sought freedom, things might be better.  In reality, their lies and deceit have done us in.

Following his in-depth observations of early nineteenth-century America, Frenchman Alexis de Tocqueville, wrote Democracy in America, 1835.  The book is a masterful account of the political and demographic expanse of early America.

De Tocqueville wrote of the three races in the new world at that time: whites, blacks, and indians.  He proposed that whites and blacks would have to get along together in a future in which they formed the vast majority of the populace.  The fate of the native people seemed doubtful to Tocqueville.  Sensing there would be unnecessary, faction-based strife among the people for years to come, he refrained from any ultimate prediction in favor of a “time will tell” conclusion.

Time has told.  Following the two major parties, the people have chosen a sort of mass suicide followed by uncertain government managed life support.  Currently, while the bloated carcass of the American public drools on the gurney, the plug is being pulled.

This all leads me to a charming little tale, told in the far distant future.

In the cold winter of 3187, in the nation of Utopia, two young children dined with their old grandfather.  Following their meal the children enjoyed a brief holographic conversation with their parents.  Mom and Dad were enjoying a well deserved vacation on Mars.

As the evening deepened outside grandpa built a cozy fire on the hearth.

“Come and tell me about your school day,” he eagerly beckoned.  Little Timmy and Suzy recounted with wonder the day’s history lesson.  “Teacher read to us from an old book by Alex Me Folkville!,” volunteered Timmy.  “It was all about the ancient Americans,” exclaimed Suzy.

Timmy inquired of the smiling old man, “Have you ever heard of the Americans?”

“Yes, they were once a great people,” said Grandpa with a sigh.

“What happened to them,” asked Suzy, snuggling under Grandpa’s flannel-clad arm.

6573676575_4e93045b4c

(A future history unfolds.  Google.)

“Well, if you really want to know, I can tell you of the Americans and their strange fate.”  Grandpa began:

A long, long time ago in a land far away, a group of wise men built up a great nation. The people were virtuous and hard-working.  Sure, they had their troubles, but they always tried to resolve them.

In such fashion they became wealthy, powerful, and happy.  They, it were, who invented many of the things we enjoy today – airplanes, spaceships, and cheeseburgers.

Just when they reached the zenith of their prosperity a funny thing happened…

“What’s a ‘zenith’,” asked Timmy as he enjoyed the wood fire.

“‘Zenith’ means ‘height’ or ‘best’,” answered Grandpa.  He continued:

The Americans were a diverse and happy people. De Tocqueville, your Me Folkville, noted their main divisions – white, black and indian or Mexican.  But, for reasons no-one really understands, they all fell under the dominion of two parties of deranged fools.  When I was a lad our teachers referred to the two groups as the rats and the roaches.  I think their real names were the Democrats and the Republicans.

Inexplicably, the free people of America, the most self-reliant and strongest of all people on earth, ceded all control of their lives to the most vile, idiotic, debased and degenerate lowlifes imaginable.

Every few years or so the people would hold a big popularity contest.  There was no need.  Everything was fine as it was.  But the rats … the Democrats and Republicans convinced the people there was good reason to place them in power.  The people filled their time with television, sports, food, and other trivialities.  Politically, they adopted an ‘us’ verses ‘them’ mentality.

Slowly, the politicians took control.  They perverted everything good about America. They made war on all other peoples just for the fun of it.  They spent money to the point the money had no value.  They encouraged the people to hate each other and themselves.  The times were vicious and confusing.

At last, in the middle of the 21st century, things fell apart.  All those great Americans had become a host of overweight, lazy, angry couch potatoes.  They traded their freedom for false security.  They were all on welfare. The world hated them.  They were poor.  They had no purpose.

The politicians and their huckster friends took the last of the money and fled abroad. The people were left in abject squalor.  Bereft of their jobs, their entertainment and their dignity they resorted to primitive tribalism.

The indians/Mexicans were centered in the southwest.  One day it was discovered that there was not a drop of water left there.  The Mexicans, those who survived, all returned to Mexico.

The southeast of the country was inhabited almost entirely by blacks.  In their collective psychosis, they decided to revert to an earlier way of life.  They decided to become slaves on various cotton plantations under the rule of white masters.  Lacking real whites, they appointed several of their own number to serve in this role.  They fared poorly and became extinct.

The whites fared no better.  Living mostly in the mountainous west, after a night of hard-drinking, they became enamoured of the idea of re-enacting the cowboy and indian wars of old.  As all real indians were then fled to Mexico, they held a giant game of shirts and skins amongst themselves. Thus, they uniformly perished.

The great American northeast, cradle of the original nation, was inhabited by one man – a Canadian named Jacque Strapp.  It was never known what became of him.

So the great land became uninhabited.  The old forests overtook the cities and after a whil, few traces of civilization remained.  And now, it is all history.  It happened so long ago…

“Would you like to live like the Americans?” Grandpa asked the children.  “Would you vote for fool politicians to ruin and destroy your lives?”

“No!” yelled both of the little ones in unison.

“Well then, good! Let us enjoy the fire,” said grandpa.

So ends the tale yet untold.  Will it become a reality?  Do we, the living, have the ability to change our fates and future history?

Will you continue to vote for your own destruction?

I hope not.  Take a queue from Timmy and Suzy.  Dispense with the rats and roaches of democracy.

Close Encounter of the Clover Kind

clovers, driving, idiots, people

It never ceases to amaze me how bad most people drive these days.  Folks too incompetent to be trusted with a gun or heavy equipment are routinely allowed to operate automobiles which are considerably more dangerous than most weapons of war. Worse, these fools on wheels continually express contempt and disdain for those of us who can actually motor responsibly.

Last week I had a run in (almost literally) with one of these self-righteous clovers.  At lunch I innocently drove over to a gas station to refuel the SUV.  Ahead of me on the road was a Ford Explorer weaving along about ten miles per hour below the speed limit. A clover to be sure it was.

Clover cruised drunkenly past the gas station and I happily pulled in.  I headed towards the second pump so as to make my exit a little easier.  Out of the corner of my right eye I noticed the Explorer execute an insane 180 degree turn.  Now traveling at the speed limit (though in a parking lot) the Ford screeched to a stop inches from my front bumper.

At this point I noticed a Georgia Tech tag on the intruder’s front bumper.  Clovers are generally none too bright and certainly not mechanically inclined.  I was perplexed.  Then I noticed an ugly woman in the driver’s seat.  She was glaring at me with a look of seething hate.  I did not know why but I understood that she thought I had invaded “her” pump.  Clovers are often possessive without cause.  Being a nice guy I smiled and waved to her.  Then I backed up to the other pump, allowing her access to “her” pump.  She aggressively charged forward – she would have almost pushed me backwards.  Oh well, live and let live…

gramma-gun-19811427559

(It’s her road.  Move!  Google.)

It turns out we both had business inside at the register.  I politely waited behind her in line whilst another clover gambled away its disability money on lottery tickets.  Ford Tech Cloveress (both ugly and fat) then turned around and looked me up and down. She snorted, “Do you always drive like that?!”  Like that.  It’s always our fault.  No matter what…  Yes, I drive like that.  I obey the rules of the road.  I go where I will without bothering anyone.  I politely help even the most obnoxious clovers at the gas station.

With growing irritation I looked at her and said, “You mean in a car? … Yeah.”  The angry little hippo then rolled her eyes, stamped a hoof and turned back around.  The Gambler scratched away, oblivious to the world.  A fly flew by.

Ticking like a bomb, Clover stewed and turned again.  She, in grunting fashion, began to lecture me about the perils of not making way for clovers.  She explained she worked at a hospital.  She stamped another hoof.  I listened patiently all the while regretting my decision to leave the house without a pistol.  When she stopped to gasp for breath I said, “Thanks for the lesson!” in happiest tone.

Finally, the decrepit numerologist at the counter ran out of luck or money and shuffled out the door. Clover then proceeded to order some gasoline for her mobile battering ram and two packs of cigarettes.  Of course, a health care worker/professor would also be a smoker.

A few minutes later, outside, as I paid homage to OPEC, Clover finished up and heaved her impressive girth into the driver’s seat of her weapon of mass annoyance.  I looked over and waved.  I yelled, smiling, “Have a great day!”  She bellowed something about being safe and respectfully and sped off.  I assume she slowed to a crawl once on the road.  She was then someone else’s problem and peril.

Lord Jesus be praised, I will likely never see this filthy witch again.  However, I know that every single day I will meet other, similar moron highwaymen (and women).

Absent the wonders of modern science (thank you, Georgia Tech) these idiots would have long ago succumbed to the terminal effects of Darwinian selection.  The moral to be learned from this little story is …. Well …. maybe there is no moral.  Nothing to know. Nothing to help.

For you and I, the sane, responsible and courtesy, all we can do is get out of the way and grin and bear it.  I rest my case.  Or, something….

Are You Holding Back?

Last week I took a Tae Kwon Do class.  It was the first formal martial arts training I’ve endured in many many years.  I didn’t do too poorly either.  The class was centered on basic movements – something it is always beneficial to revisit.  Best of all, I received some professional critiquing.

Towards the end of the program we practiced side kicks into a bag.  My kicks used to be semi-legendary for sheer power.  Now, I am a little older and, yes, weaker than I used to be.  After five or six kicks the instructor, an old friend and mentor of mine, commented that I was “holding back.”  In addition to decades of experience, he was holding the bag steady and could feel the impact.  I thought for a second and realized he was correct as usual.  I was very happy merely lifting my leg and making precise contact but I was putting a woefully inadequate amount of strength into my delivery.

On the next kick, and those that followed, I hit hard and pushed through.  Unless a kick is designed to push an opponent back in order to buy time or space, its purpose is to penetrate as deeply as possible.  This requires mentally aiming into the center of the target and producing enough torque to effectively carry through the strike.

Whereas my first efforts made contact and sent a mild shock-wave through the bag, the final hits actually moved it backwards – hard.  This resulted in both bag and instructor being rapidly displaced.

Afterwards I briefly reflected on why I had initially held back.  What I came up with amounted to fear and uncertainty.  I was unsure of whether I still had it and I figured that, being slightly out of shape, I should go easy on myself.  Both of these problems resided entirely inside my head.

The mere action of kicking chest level and hitting dead center demonstrated I could still perform properly.  I won’t lie – my joints and muscles hurt.  Years of inactivity and a little age will do that.  However, hitting full force didn’t hurt any worse than halfhearted strikes.  In other words, I had nothing to lose by going all in.

side kick

(She ain’t holding back. Google images.)

This incident is allegorical to much of life.  Take this blog for instance; I have scores of draft articles just sitting in limbo.  It’s probably enough material for several books.  My hesitation deprives me of self-expression and you of reading enjoyment.

I have a habit of writing/publishing for months at a time and then taking an equal time off.  The reasons don’t really matter.  The point is my inconsistency produces nothing while continued consistency would require little if any additional effort.

I bet you hold back in similar fashion – in numerous areas of life.  Get with it – you’ve nothing to lose.  There, you may now think of me as your martial arts/mental coaching instructor.  Don’t hold back!

PS: Don’t do anything stupid.  Leave that to me.

education, free, MIT

Amid other astounding proposals, President Obama recently proposed universal two-year college educations for Americans.  This likely would mean an associates degree from a local community or technical college.  It will also likely be as free as your health insurance.

The good news is you do not have to wait on Washington.  A free college education is now available from one of the finest Universities in the world, and it’s not limited to a two year term.

The Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) has made virtually every course available to the public – at no cost.  It’s called Open Course Ware – check it out now.  The only requirements are that you have a computer, be able to read, and know basic math skills.  That means it is open to just about everyone.  Note – I’ve heard some sensitive nuclear engineering classes are redacted.

Here are some of the department offerings available:

ocw1

Here are some classes in the political science department:

ocw2

Everything is there, including graduate level classes.

When you open a class you get:

ocw3

Notes, lectures, tests are all there.  For a full experience you would probably need to purchase textbooks and other materials.  The drawback is that even if you complete a full course load, you will not receive a degree.  However, you will get the benefit of free information.  It’s like auditing classes, but for free.

Take a look around and see if you find classes of interest.  Yours truly may explore a few subjects.  You do the same – have fun and learn something new!

perrinlovett.com

Dear Readers,

My site modification and clean-up efforts are continuing (if a bit behind schedule).  For starters, I am making the site a little less cluttered…AND…it’s no longer “http:dot..perrin.lovett.wordpress.dot.dot…..etc.”  Now, it’s simply …. http://perrinlovett.com!  Perrinlovett.com, mark your favorites now.  Otherwise, you will be re-directed anyway.

cropped-wp-header.jpg

New columns are coming VERY soon – more Natural Law and trenchant policy commentary, less news chasing.  And, thank you very much for continuing to visit in spite of the late infrequency of posts.  I am flattered.

Perrin

PS: I suspect with the new domain name may come a few WP sourced ads.  I’ve never had these and I cannot afford to opt out of them right now.  Ignore them (unless they advertise something you want).  In the near future I will likely partner with a Google service to place ads here which are in keeping with the local theme and content (I will make a little money off these, maybe).
