I’m taking a little break from my usual anarchist ramblings to update you, my beloved readers, on a wonderful development in the cigar world.

The other evening I stopped by Top Shelf Cigars in Evans/Martinez (Augusta), Georgia for a very special event.  Patrick’s cigars are available at better shops across the nation. 23 special shops nationwide were chosen for this inaugural rollout – being the best in Georgia and the Southeast, Russell’s place was a natural tour stop.

Patrick Vivalo, the namesake of Vivalo Cigars, graced Top Shelf with his electric presence and his fabulous smokes.

(Russell Wilder with Patrick Vivalo.)

As an added bonus Patrick’s dad, Bob, was on hand.  He recalled Patrick’s early years – the living room fire, the arrests, the drugs – no, wait, that was me.  Actually, this very personable fellow beamed with pride as he acknowledged his son’s achievements.

Patrick got his start in cigars working retail at JR’s in New Jersey.  He quickly progressed to Rocky Patel’s outfit in the early 2000s (then known as Indian Tabac).  Under Rocky’s tutelage he developed his own sense of flavor and integrity and blended some of the finest sticks in the industry.

A short while back he crafted his own personal blend as a matter of curiosity.  Sensing genius at work, someone demanded to try Patrick’s proprietary smokes.  A legend was born.  In March of this year Patrick launched his own label.

(I smoked a Gordo Maduro and loved it.  Look for these babies at your shop soon.)

“I have always waited for the day to do my own thing and the day is finally here,” said Vivalo to Halfwheel. “I just want to make great cigars for people to enjoy. After that, I don’t know much else to say except that I hope people enjoy my creations!”  Vivalo, quoted in HalfWheel (2015).  There are a “total of five vitolas (Vivalos), as the original Vivalo Serie Exclusivo Lonsdale (6 x 44) was joined by a 5 1/2 x belicoso, 4 7/8 x 50 robusto, 6 x 60 gordo and 5 1/2 x 54 robusto grande, all of which are sold in boxes of 20.”  HalfWheel, Id.

“The cigars are a blend of a Jalapa Colorado shade wrapper from Nicaragua, binder from Estelí, Nicaragua, and Nicaraguan filler from Estelí and Jalapa.” Id.  As I understand things, Rocky kindly allows assembly of these beauties at his Honduran facility.

“I believe with my passion, dedication and my attention to detail that I will succeed as a cigar maker. Again, I can’t express my gratitude enough towards those who have paved the way for me to be the person I am today.”  Vivalo, in The Cigar Authority (2015). The cigars speak for themselves.  Patrick’s humble yet excited demeanor (with his Dad cheerleading) speaks to his honest gratitude and excellent personality.  I think he will succeed  and I wish him the best.

IMG_20150605_160351476_HDR

(Patrick even has the humor to tolerate grinning, semi intoxicated bloggers.)

I did a short video interview with Patrick.  Should the technology gods smile on me, you may be able to view it some day.

Patrick blends ever size of cigar with a slightly different taste and experience; this is a nod to the great Cuban tradition.  He described the importance of the process:

Nine times out of ten, with the non-Cuban market, you could pick up a 38 ring-gauge, a 50 ring-gauge, and a 60 ring-gauge and the bigger you go the mellower you get.  The smaller ring-gauges are going to be more of your powerhouse.  I felt that blending each size to the specific ring-gauge and length really brings out the subtle nuances in each size.

– exclusive Vivalo interview with Perrin Lovett.

My Gordo was exceptionally smooth and even throughout with a very Cuban-like mellow, delicious flavor.  The stick drew perfectly and burned well with no touch-ups needed.  I was very impressed with this first effort.  A new line is under development.  If it is half of the original is, it will be a knockout.  Try one soon.

(The Top Shelf crew enjoying Vivalo’s magic and Russell’s usual hospitality.)

Former Mississippi State Baseball standout, Kent Daniel, described the Vivalo Robusto as one of his favorites.  His absolute favorite is Patrick’s Bellicoso.  “We are very proud of [Patrick] for bringing his blends to Martinez, Georgia,” Daniel said as he puffed away on the Robusto.

If you’re in Augusta, visit Top Shelf; tell them Perrin sent you.  If you’re at any decent shop, look for a Vivalo.  Your good taste will set you apart.

As a post script, I am now friends with Emma Viktorsson, of Cigar Fantasia.  Emma is a veritable Swedish Valkyrie – far better looking than young Vivalo (sorry, Patrick, she is). If you’re familiar with Jose Blanco and Senorial Cigars, you probably know her work.  Should I make a press appearance at the IPCPR International show in New Orleans next month I intend to interview her (or at least drool and stutter politely). Time will tell.

Small Batch, Big Smoke

Today I tried a Perdomo Small Batch Maduro.  It’s not the behemoth I usually smoke these days but my friend Nick Jr. has knocked himself out with this one. The “small” batch refers to a limited, 3000 box run.

IMG_20150603_121042257

Master blender Nick Perdomo Jr. delivers a 3-part line with each blend boasting as rich a flavor as the Perdomo family cigar history. Coming to America from Cuba during the revolution, the Perdomo family found the freedom to continue their craft as skilled tobacco artisans, and they haven’t looked back. Forward to today, and Nick Jr. is at the top of his game, and with his next release, the Perdomo Small Batch Series, a carefully selected blend of 10-year-aged tobaccos showcase the skills gained by decades of industry knowledge.

The Maduro variety features a dark-chocolate colored Nicaraguan maduro wrapper leaf. Lying just underneath, a bevy of well-aged Nicaraguan longer-fillers are encased by a refined Nicaraguan binder. Full-bodied, Perdomo Small Batch Maduro delivers bold notes of white pepper, earth, and leather. A long and well-balanced finish caps off the experience and with Perdomo’s seal of approval, you know you can’t go wrong.

I concur with this marketing blurb.  In short, and in Perrin-speak, this stick is television shooting good!

Consult your local tobacconist for details!  If he’s really cool like my guy, he will have Nick in the house:

Rub a Dub Nub: Small Cigar, Big Smoke

Nub: 3) “a lump or small piece.”

Nub by Oliva: “Rather than wait for a cigar to develop and evolve, which typically occurs an inch to two inches in, the idea behind Oliva’s Nub was to specifically blend it to hit its sweet spot right off the bat and remain at its peak right through to the end. Each size is short and stout in stature.”

A few evenings ago I was working digitally at my favorite hangout of all time – Top Shelf Cigars.  In walks Mike Walters of the Oliva Company (Family).  Mike offered me my choice of delectable smokes, freebies from the great maker.  Note: Cigar Representatives always frequent good shops; they present their wares to regulars as a gesture of goodwill and as a research tool (another benefit of the hobby!).  Running short on time I chose a Nub, the little brand of which I have had some prior experience – all positive. The Nub: short, sweet and to the point.  This stick was in stark contrast to the excellent but enormous titan of a cigar I last reviewed.

IMG_20150527_113909685

(This may be larger than the actual cigar.)

IMG_20150527_114009040

(It’s a business card size smoke.  Visit, call or email Russell for details.)

The Camaroon or Maduro Nub delivers an excellent experience, rich with taste for those in a hurry.  Under normal conditions it is good for maybe 30 to 45 minutes of enjoyment.  It’s perfect for the lunch hour break.

Surprisingly, given its diminutive size, the little fellow packs a punch.  Born in Nicaragua this gem is (in those blends I noted) rich, earthy and, perhaps, a little woody.  I don’t write for Aficionado so I am unable to find notes of coffee, pencil eraser, or chocolate raspberry liquorice. None-the-less, the Nub is an outstanding choice.  A lighter blend makes an excellent first cigar as it is not overpowering nor bitter.

As the Oliva site says, it cuts to the chase of the smoke – straight to the good flavors that usually take a minute or two to develop.

Remember the Nub.  Just because you’re short on time doesn’t mean you must be short on smoke.

Cigar Lunacy

Cigars are a hobby of mine.  I have written about them before and before.

Today I am happy to report that we have crossed a new frontier in cigar legend: the monstrous JFR Lunatic by Casa Fernandez (formerly Tropical Tobacco).  This is a TITANIC smoke – an 8 x 80(!) – and not for the faint of heart.

IMG_20150506_140402693

(For comparison I placed a Lunatic next to JFR’s already massive 770 and a “normal” sized smoke – an Ashton VSG robusto.)

IMG_20150506_140908632_HDR

(And, next to a book of matches.)

As the resident lunatic smoker of my home shop I was asked to review this beast. Russell kindly provided me with a free sample courtesy of Maritza of Fernandez.

I have smoked 80 ring-gauges before (such as the Asylum 6 x 80).  I found them decent in flavor and consistency but a bit unwieldy.  Damn near an inch and a half in width a standard 80 actually starts to hurt the jaw while smoking.  It’s reminiscent of a visit to the dentist involving one of those devices which holds the mouth open.  JFR has cured this by producing the Lunatic in a tapered or “pyramid” design.  The cap end is about the size of a 60 RG.  This makes the smoking process itself easier.

The taste is excellent – the same blend as ordinary JFRs.  The cigar is well constructed and burns evenly.  One distinct problem, though, is that the smoke does not hold it’s ash well.  The ash produced is a clean, light gray color but after half an inch or so it but be tapped off in order to prevent an accident.  With such a ridiculous girth the center of the ash is still active and could cause a burn if it fell off inadvertently.

Another problem (or benefit) of the Lunatic is the smoking time required.  The smoke is immediately flavorful with no bitterness.  It has a woody, earth Nicaraguan taste which is consistent.  However, I estimate it would take at least three hours to finish this monster.  Theoretically, it might take up to four hours.  This is great for a fishing trip but might be overwhelming for average afternoon enjoyment.  Again, I must warn that is not a stick for novices.

IMG_20150506_141127459

(Not a beginner cigar.)

In the end this may be too much of a good thing.  I will likely stick with routine 6 x 60s and 7 x 70s for heavy flavor delivery.  However, I did like the Lunatic immensely (pun…).  I don’t have a rating system but I do like it.  My description herein should suffice for you to make your own decision.  I suspect this novelty will remain just that and only available for a short time or in limited quantity.  For an estimated $10 it is really a bargain.

Of course, if you must have a GIGANTIC smoke look no further than Indigo’s Chief.  At a foot and a half long it should last all day and then some.  Good luck finding one.  Better luck finishing one.

IMG_20150506_140453401

(As crazy a comparison as may be made…)

Whatever the size or flavor, remember,

IMG_20150506_140619931

(Yes, Rudyard, a good cigar is a smoke.)

For the skeptics and haters:

IMG_20150424_195420744_HDR

(The real lunatics are politicians and their enablers.  Put that in your pipe and smoke it).

Happy smoking!

I survived another Masters Tournament!  And what an affair it was – one of the best in great period of bests!  Tiger didn’t win but he did greatly improve over his recent forays. None of my favorites made it either.  Hats off to Jordan Spieth.  What a showing!

The show over at the Hooters’s tent on Washington Road was outstanding as well:

(How about John Daly performing with Shinebox!?)

Seriously, who knew Daly can sing?  He sang Knockin’ on Heaven’s Door by Bob Dylan. And, he was good.  That’s Big John in the above picture on the left.  I have a video of the whole song.  Shinebox is disappointed as you must be that I lack the technological know how to post it.  It’s coming along with blog-related videos.  Remember, I have the tech skills of a possum.

(It was a great week.  Join us next year.)

As a happy aside – we just celebrated tax day!  Another best of best days but some are perplexed: “As they rush to file their taxes by April 15, Americans are rightfully frustrated with the complexity of the 74,608-page-long federal tax code.”  The Not-So-Affordable Care Act (just another tax) added a measly three thousand pages…  What’s there to complain about?

Today I published An Unexpected Gift: Christmas at the Supreme Court, a celebration of the Court’s ruling in Rodriguez vs. United States, April 21, 2015.  Give it a read.  I’m working on a few more heavy hitters, one of which might make it out today.  Stay tuned.

Augusta, cigars, golf, Hooters, Masters, Miguel Jimenez, Shinebox

Ah!  The sun is out, the azaleas are in bloom and John Daly is in front of Hooters.  It is Masters week in Augusta!  Tomorrow they commence the 79th Tournament.  Today I make my predictions.  It’s hard with such a stellar field of talent.  Here I go:

I will always maintain Miguel Jimenez is the baddest man to ever swing a golf club.  With him anything is always possible.  Last year he finished with a career best fourth place.  Let’s call him my number one pick.

Miguel-Jimenez-Cigar_897565

(Google.)

To be realistic, I have a short list of contenders.  The Southerner in me is pulling for Bubba.  I’m also a big Patrick Reed fan – his star has been rising of late.  As a former big guy I can’t help but like Kevin Stadler.  Then there’s Rory, Adam Scott, and everyone else.  Incredible talent.  I give Tiger until Friday.

If you’re in the Garden City on Friday night, stop by Hooters and see my buddy’s band, Shinebox.  Another friend of mine will supply the cigars.  It’s a guaranteed good time.  Just leave your drone at home…

Summer is in full swing and it’s time for a cigar!  Okay, this summer it seems it’s either crazy hot or raining buckets.  What is the discerning outdoor cigar smoker to do?  Sit in the garage?  The wife will still nag about smoke magically seeping through the walls.  Light up in the car?  That’s not very comfortable.  Puff away under an umbrella?  You get the idea.  On a hot and humid day or a really wet day it’s extremely difficult to enjoy a fine cigar in the great outdoors.  Or it was…

Today you can smoke a stogie outside, rain or shine, in complete comfort!  My good friend, Russell Wilder, has raised the bar even higher by adding a beautiful and spacious covered outdoor deck over at Top Shelf Cigars!

image001

Check out this beauty!

Here’s the view from inside:

0801131423

Take another look; cool and comfortable!

0801131423a

The deck, just like everything else Russell does, is top-notch.  The whole area is furnished with comfortable chairs and plenty of tables for all your needs.  You’ll find ashtrays, cutters, and lighters ready to go.  Unlike at some other tobacco “shops,” on-site cigar enjoyment is actively encouraged here.  Stop by and try something new like a Perdomo Champagne Sun Grown or a tried and true favorite like an Ashton VSG.  Whatever you want, you’ll find it in the area’s largest and most luxurious humidor.

When fall ushers in cooler days, the deck will be the perfect place to enjoy a smoke and a spiced beer.  Should winter deliver a rare snow, the fun can go on in style.  Top Shelf is now the home of the ultimate outdoor cigar venue!

Of course, to experience the Ultimate Ultimate experience, all one has to do is step inside – into the classiest smoke shop this side of Park Avenue.  For an outline of what you can expect, check out my older Top Shelf story.  But, again, don’t take my word for it.  Stop in and see for yourself!  Pay Gerald, Sarah, Tom, Matt, Jake, and Russell “Cigar Man” Wilder a visit.  You’ll be glad you did.

Here follows an article I wrote some seven years ago for the now defunct News From The Vegas Room, Vol. II, Issue I.  This is the former unofficial publication of my local cigar shop, Top Shelf Cigars.  I re-posted it here with implied permission.  It’s a column (page 2, mind you) about cigars and the Cuban Embargo!  Just click on the following link to read (page 2):

Bolivar Belicosos Fino (Google Images, fair useage, etc…)

The information contained in the old article may be out of date – I cite some laws which may have changed.  Then again, though the Cuban embargo still stands, President Obama has recently expressed his desire to end this stupid policy.  I spoke with my tobacconist today about the cigar ramifications and I re-read the article – still pretty spot on and accurate.  Enjoy!

It also features an old, poor-quality picture of yours truly, when I was much larger.  hehehe…

Athens, Benny Hinn, Buck Rogers, Buff Bagwell, chicken, cigars, Don Knotts, Gold's Gym, hottie, Jake Roberts, Jimmy Carter, Joe Penny, Ken Starr, Kenny Rogers, L.A., Masters, Michael Stipe, MSU, Rafael Palmeiro, Starkville, Steve Forbes, Suzanne Yoculan, UGA, Vince Dooley, Will Clark, WWF

The idea for this post came to me today.  I suppose it was because it’s Masters time and everyone is on the lookout for the rich and famous.  I’ve met numerous famous people during my lifetime.  People love celebrity stories so I thought I would bore you with some of mine.

I’ll start with the two whose autographs I asked for and received.  Not being an autograph hound, the idea usually doesn’t come to me.  I’m not counting the ones who have signed books for me, those are numerous.

Don Knotts

I met Don Knotts at Mississippi State University in the early to mid 1980s.  He was in Starkville to give a comedy-laden speech about his life and career.  He was genuinely one of the funniest and down to earth person I’ve ever encountered.  The demeanor he exhibited on Andy Griffith and Three’s Company was him, unless he was hamming it up the night I saw him.  I can’t recall anything he said but I remember it was fascinating.  He signed a picture of himself for me.  I lost it.

Vince Dooley

Any good old boy from Georgia would be compelled to get the coach’s autograph.  So I did one afternoon.  The funny thing was, I had him sign a baseball.  I was at a baseball game in Athens and decided to go get a hotdog.  On my way out of the stands a pretty girl in a UGA outfit gave me a UGA baseball.  I put it in my pocket and proceeded to the concession stand.  While I was waiting in line I happened to look behind me and there was Dooley.  He had a pen, I had a baseball.  The rest is concession stand history.  He was overly gracious.  I have since misplaced the ball.

Suzanne Yoculan

I has working out (back when I was in super-shape at the brand-new UGA athletic facility (we called it the SPACE Center, it has a different name now).  Being a dumbbell I was hanging out with my kin.  I noticed an extra attractive blonde next to me.  It was Yoculan.  We had a nice chat between sets about gymnastics and fitness in general.  So, I think I’ve met UGA’s most famous coach and their winningest coach.  Yoculan was very nice.  Almost all the celebrities I’ve ever met have been very nice.  Not so many looked as good as her though.  I think I was on a flight to L.A. with the hottie who played Princess Ardala in Buck Rogers but I’m not sure.  She may have just been a hottie.

Kenny Rogers

I met a slew of famous folks in and around Athens, as you can gather.  I had a girlfriend who managed a Hallmark card shop.  I was hanging around one Saturday, being a general nuisance.  I found the name tag maker and made myself a name tag – “Bubba.”  In walked Rogers and his beautiful then-girlfriend, now wife.  He stood around like an average ordinary dude while the woman shopped.  I recall she ran up a good-sized tab, which Rogers paid (with cash).  I jumped behind a register and acted like I worked there.  One of the girls pushed me aside.  After the payment, the Misses decided she wanted to shop some more.  Kenny had enough and headed out to sit in the car, which turned out to be a mini-van.  I strolled out and talked to him for a minute or two about his music and his chicken franchises (remember those?).  I might have him autograph something but I can’t remember; if I did, I lost it.

Will Clark and Rafael Palmeiro

Daddy taught at MSU when I was young.  We went to almost every home game – football and baseball.  During the 1984 or 85 season he got me a ball autographed by the entire team (including Ron Polk).  I think Brantley or Thigpen or someone was in one of his classes.  He pulled rank, not me – therefore, I don’t count this encounter as one where I sought the autographs.  By the way, I have that ball under glass on a shelf at home.  It turns out a good friend of mine was on the team the year before.  I showed him the ball once and he went into a time-warp memory trance.  Autographs are powerful.  Anyway, I think it was the evening the team got back from an unsuccessful world-series run or maybe it was on their way out).  The media were gathered and many interviews occurred concurrently.  Clark and Palmeiro had no trouble taking a moment or two to humor little me.  Great men.

bball

(If you’re a MSU or MLB fan, I might consider selling the ball.  $erious offer$ only…)

Michael Stipe

This really doesn’t count as a meeting so much as a random funniness.  A friend of mine and I were visiting with my doctor in .. you guessed it – Athens on morning.  The Doc was developing a bar/apartment complex on Clayton Street.  He had invited us over to look around.  Anyway, we were all standing out on the sidewalk when this bald-headed skinny guy in a sweat suit came jogging by.  One of us said, “It that Michael Stipe?”  The second said, “That looks like Michael Stipe.”  Then third said loudly, “That’s Michael Stipe!”  Stipe glanced nervously over his shoulder and then bolted off at a full sprint.  Funny if you were there.  I was.

Aurelian Smith, Jr.

You know Smith better by his ring name, Jake “The Snake” Roberts.  He was the first of the many wrestlers I’ve met and the first of two I’ve worked out with.  I was pumping serious iron at the Gold’s gym in … Athens on morning when I noticed this tall guy on a bench (bench press bench) reading the paper.  I took a second look and determined it was Roberts.  About that time he noticed me and asked for a spot.  We talked a good deal about his life and things generally.  I had just seen him on the Benny Hinn show and had some questions about Hinn’s performances, which, honestly, look as scripted as anything from the WWF.  Roberts assured me that Hinn was a sincere Christian and that he exuded an uncanny “electric” presence – one that could be felt physically.  He and I worked out quite a few times and talked frequently in the parking lot.  Jake drove a rotating variety of older vehciles.  He was a great conversationalist and as un-snake like as could be.

Marcus Bagwell

Marcus is better known as Buff Bagwell.  I met him in the Gold’s Gym in Woodstock, Georgia.  This was during one of my short-lived attempts to get back in shape.  Buff was in great shape, naturally, and his encouragement and friendliness helped me during the run.  The poor guy was in a bad automobile wreck not too long ago.  A lot of the wrestlers I’ve known, including Jake, have had problems later on.  Sad, but I guess it comes with the territory.

Joe Penny

When I was a teenager I worked out at another of Bill Smith’s great clubs – Bodytalk.  On summer day I was milling around and saw Penny. You may remember him from Jake and the Fatman and Riptide.  His dad was a local school principal and Joe came for a visit.  Like Jake he requested a spot and we struck up a conversation.  I naturally get along with most people and since I’m not a pop culture nut I suppose I don’t annoy the celebs as others might.  Anyway, he was a very quiet but personable fellow.

Jimmy Carter

I worked in and around the Georgia General Assembly during the last year of law school.  The former President came to town and gave a speech one day.  I attended and found what he had to saw inspiring and common-sensical.  I don’t really recall what he talked about but it was interesting.  After he talked and was shaking hands with the resident ticks, I made my way down to Governor’s private door.  I figured that’s where Carter would exit.  I was right.  After a few minutes he and Rosalynn came along with one or two Secret Service agents and some State Troopers.  He stopped for a second, shook my hand, and made pleasant small talk.  It’s funny; I don’t generally view his Presidency as a particular success but I was very pleased to meet him.  He’s the only President I’ve ever met.  The next best person is John Anderson.  He was a professor of mine in law school and is now a friend.  I’ve met so many other politicians, they don’t faze me anymore (I do keep my hand on my wallet though…).

Steve Forbes

This is one of the few cases where I heard a famous person talk about something and remember what he said.  Forbes spoke to the Federalist Society’s 2001 national conference about the ridiculous monetary policy of the Federal government.  While not outright calling for a return to the gold standard, he advocated SOME standard so we at least know where we stand.  He analyzed it to a carpenter trying to build a house when his tape measure changes units every day.  After he spoke I mosied up and we talked for a little while about the subject.  I asked him how we could ever got back to a sane system.  He said all we could do is to keep hammering the point over and over.  Ron Paul did a great job of this.  Forbes was by far the wealthiest person I ever met yet one of the absolute nicest.

Kenneth Starr

I first met Ken at the same Fed-Soc function where I met Forbes.  I’ve since met him many, many times again.  Our second meeting was at Ted Olson’s Virgina home the next summer (I once ran with the elite…).  I saw Ken and his wife and guided my wife over for an introduction.  He saw us coming and walked over.  He actually remembered me and said, “Hello, Perrin!”  The wives were happily introduced and we went on drinking champagne and doing snooty country club stuff.  How cool is it to be recognized by a celebrity, whatever you think of his professional work?

Cigar Royalty

Through my cigar connections, I’ve met many of the biggest names in the cigar world.  I won’t name names here.  Like politicians, to me they are a dime a dozen.  However, unlike the ticks, I consider these folks my friends (in real life and on Facebook!).  All are exceptional and kindly.  ALmost everyone in cigarland is that nice.

My favorite celebrities are my beloved readers – you!  Maybe I’ll write some funny snippets about you someday!

Building on my last happy advice column, I’d like to offer another ten easy things you can do today to make your life a little happier.

1. Smoke a Cigar.

This probably is more appealing to the male audience though quiet a few women enjoy the leaf as well.  Use my recent Cigar Guide as a starting point and see if you like the hobby.  You only need one, it won’t cost that much and it will only take an hour or so to enjoy.  I’ve researched the health risks associated with occasional cigar smoking – it’s negligent.  In fact, I think the relaxation benefits far outweigh the .002% increase in the risk of problems.

2. Lose the News.

The commercial news in America is boring at best, toxic at worst.  You will not miss anything important if you take a break for a day or so.  Murders, wars, theft, depression, scandal, etc. will go on in your absence – only you won’t be dragged down by it.  Consider ignorance bliss and disconnect.  This advice, of course, does not extent to your favorite blog.

3. Slow Down Some More.

Last time I recommended slowing your pace in life in order to de-stress and feel better.  Do it some more.  Remember, even if you win the rat race, you’re still a rat.  Who likes rats?  Check the emails tomorrow.  There’s enough food at the house, lay off the super-market today.  Let the little old lady merge into your lane.  Be happy.  Be free.

4. Let Someone Tell You, “You Can’t” and Prove Them Wrong.

So many people are afraid of things – everything.  If they can’t conceive of a way to do some particular thing, they assume nobody can do it.  In psychology this is called transference or projection or something.  They’ll say you can’t lose the weight.  They’ll say your business won’t make it.  They’ll say such a hot blonde will never go out with you.  Don’t listen.  If you really want to do something and it’s meant to be, you can’t fail – unless you fail to try.  A young man at Yale was told his presented idea in an economics class would never be feasible; years later, the man put his plan into action and founded Federal Express.  When you succeed, take comfort in your accomplishment.  Remember to be gracious to your detractors, maybe you will inspire them to rise above their own roadblocks.

5. Encourage Someone.

The pre-emptive strike against worldly negativity is to place faith in someone else’s ideas.  When someone runs by a plan for something new by you, tell them what you think, but make sure you end it positively.  A little encouragement goes a long way and may be just the boost a person needs to get over their fears and societal conditioning of failure and make “it” happen.  Praise is contagious too.  Start a fire!

6. Write a Letter to the Editor.

I used to do this with very limited success.  Now, I’m the editor and everything I write gets published – and read.  Pick a topic you’re passionate about and tell the world your opinions.  Everyone is an expert at something, share your insights.  Like encouragement, it might spark somebody to positive action.  A common tactic is to write an “open” letter to a CongressCritter or some other prominent person or organization and forward a copy to the local fish-wrapper.  Knowing your views will be viewed by a wide audience may give a politician or other figure more reason to act than your letter alone would.  Try it and see.

7. Question Authority.

People in power frequently use their power to limit the powerless.  Challenge them.  Thomas Jefferson once said, “I have sworn upon the altar of god eternal hostility against every form of tyranny over the mind of man.”  One can’t have a better role model than old T.J.  When the cop asks you if you knew how fast you were going, don’t answer; this denies them your assistance in your prosecution and takes a little of the bully out of them.  If a teacher tells you heat rises, ask why, then, does the TOP of the pond freeze.  Make her explain thermodynamics in full.  Be polite and don’t do anything so outrageous as to risk arrest.  By speaking truth to power or denying the power altogether, you can preserve liberty and concurrently increase understanding – both admirable ends.  This, again, does not apply to your favorite blog (wink, wink).

8. Take a Hike!

Last time I relayed the benefits of a simple walk around the block.  Hiking through God’s country increases the benefits, both in terms of exercise exertion and scenery.  Hikes need not be limited to the woods or the mountains.  Stalk away through the dunes or a country road.  Explore your local park or the land along the river-side levee.  Make sure you have good shoes for this one.  I once reached in the closet, without looking, for boots to take to the Smokey Mountains.  A mile or so in I realized duck-hunting boots were not made for trudging up-hill…

9. Write a Book.

I recommended reading a book.  That’s always good advice.  Take it to the next level and make your own literary contribution to the world.  If it’s not a full-length book, then write a pamphlet or start a blog!  By the way, books are easier than ever to publish these days.  Check out www.createspace.com, there’s a link here on the left.  This service will not only turn your ideas into print but will make them commercially available to the masses – all for free.  Your book can be about anything.  There are no rules and no constraints anymore.  Read James Altucher’s excellent column on the subject – http://www.jamesaltucher.com/2011/05/why-and-how-i-self-published-a-book/.  This was my inspiration to start blogging and ram through my first book (soon, I promise…).

10. Give Thanks for Something.

Anything.  Good or bad.  “In everything give thanks.”  1 Thessalonians 5:18.  God does everything for a reason.  Thank Him.  Too smart for God, then thank Mother Earth, or Father Time, the Tooth Fairy or whoever.  Believe in something bigger than you.  As for the good and the bad, even non-Christian philosophers speak of accepting both with the same stoic resolve.  See Marcus Aurelius on that point.  Spread the word.  Accept, give thanks, take action, be happy.

BONUS! 11. Forward this advice to people you know.  Come up with some more things people can do!
