free thought, life, Perrin Lovett

Everyone has a list of things they’ve done and of things they didn’t do. Some inspire regret, others thanks to God. Here’s a short, little list of things I could have done but didn’t and my current thoughts thereon.

I …

Could have worked in Antarctica – I saw this ad during college for a seasonal support job waaaaaay down south. I think it involved bulldozer operating and bar tending. I probably should have done that. Then again I probably would have mixed the jobs together with disastrous consequences…

Could have joined the Neocons – There was a time when I was heavily connected to the Washington power machine. I knew a lot of the right people and was in a lot of the right places. (I had a bad habit of saying the wrong things though). If I had joined up I’d probably be in the running to become Trump’s AG. That, or I’d be the fall guy in prison for something. So glad I did not follow through; my conscious kept bothering me.

Could still be working as a staff attorney and maybe teaching part-time – It’s a mixed bag of thoughts. What a great job I had some 10 – 12 years ago! There was all kinds of room for opportunity but I’m not sure it was the right kind. Everything happens for a reason. I’ll confine that era to the happy memories.

Could have worked for Hammer Strength – After college I could have applied to work in sales for this renowned exercise equipment maker. It would have been fun at least for a while. These days I make use of their products so I suppose it all worked out (get it????)…

Could have headed to the hills – North Carolina, New Hampshire, The Black Hills, the Rockies. I headed to ’em and headed back many times. Higher elevations, cool weather, and free-flowing water always agree with me. I’m still headed that way. Someday.

Could have gone to MSU or to UVA – I did UGA instead. What a lovely alphabet soup I have. I wonder if things might have been different. It could be that I would have just chased beer and drank girls (?) in a different town… Athens was fun, I think…

Could have been more serious/in-tune about college – Oh well.

Could have been an Administrative Law Judge – That would have been a cushy and somewhat fun job. It also might have been like working in an insane asylum.

Could have tried to brew my own beer – I regret that one but it’s still not too late. “Anarchy Brewing” anyone?

Could have watched football while smoking a cigar at Edward’s – Okay, I did:

0503141320_0001

Could have produced more blog and books and such – Well, there’s this and I’m slow. Just wait.

Today is the Fourth Anniversary of my little blog. I’m proud of how far I’ve come though I have many, many improvements to make and massive growth to capture. Thank you again for all your support during these formative years.

nimbus-image-1466784096963.png

Here’s where I am presently:

I need to do a lot of updates. This post, if published in order, will be number 547. That’s great, content wise, but I happen to have 56 more drafts in the works. That means I’m holding back more than 10% of my material. Some of those drafts will never see the light of the internet. Some are just notes for me. Some are redundant. Some are just terrible. Still I have plenty to work with and to do.

Then again, 500 posts is a lot already. If my blog was a novel it would be approximately twice the length of the Lord of the Rings.

It’s also leading into other, newer, better things for me and for you.

I’ve published two books in less than a year. One is for sale on Amazon. The other is free, here.

Please buy now.

Have this one for free!

Like the blog posts, I have a huge number of book drafts under way. I’m planning to publish several this summer.

I’m also working on a Udemy course. They’ve put me on a deadline so I should have that out by mid-July. The price range will be around $20-25; you’ll enjoy it and learn a heap.

The blog has also gotten me some positive attention and some freelance writing gigs. I’m so happy with those that I am in the process of becoming a full-time, paid writer and consultant. Much of that content will not bear my name but it will pay the bills until the books, courses, webinars, etc. take over.

In keeping with these business advancements, and for personal reasons, I am in the process of relocating to a certain income-tax free state. That project should be complete by the end of summer if all goes well. I move rather slowly but I always get there.

That’s what I have so far. I look forward to reporting this time next year on even greater successes. Thanks for all your help.

“It’s hip to be square.” So said Huey Lewis and the News back in a time that now seems like a Pleistocene fairytale. Sometimes a square cigar is hip to a square who isn’t. Or isn’t always. Or something. I smoked a square cigar! Actually, it was rectangular (for the Euclidean purists). And I liked it.

Now comes the tale of the Foyle l’Anniversario Maduro, mine being a toro (5 ½ x 55). This sleek beauty is produced by Foyle. Just remember to confirm you’re 21…

nimbus-image-1466437019987

My straight box toro was extremely well constructed. The dark Connecticut, broadleaf wrapper (aged and fermented for three months!) was attractive with a deep coffee-esque, oily appearance.

IMG_20160618_201810552

The enjoyment process itself was smooth from start to finish. The cigar burned even, uniform, with no need for retouch address. The draw was next to effortless and delivered consistent smoke which developed into a rich harmony of flavors.

The binder purports to be Ecuadorian Sumatra; the filler is part Dominican and part Nicaraguan. I suppose this mixture allows for the gracious, sweet notes of coffee and spice with a generous dose of that Esteli earth I so dearly love. Other, more sensitive palates might discern chocolate and soft, dry leather. Whatever you pick out, you’ll admit it’s an excellent taste.

All this excitement is put together in Danli, Honduras. It’s a veritable hour-long geography lesson of the Americas! Foyle is a relatively new boutique brand distributed by Alliance. Their top shelf offerings are the scions of a couple of industry insiders – Dave Topper and Tom Sullivan, me thinks. Insiders, outsiders, whatever – they’ve done a tremendous job in creating this little square standout.

I found the rectangular wonder to be of solid “medium” body. Not too strong, not too soft. I imagine this stick would appeal to just about any and all smokers though a newbie might want to fortify the stomach with a good dinner prior to lighting up.

Me, I enjoyed after a light supper, pairing my toro with a plastic flask of vintage dihydrogen monoxide. It was a fine summer evening for a little work out-of-doors. My essays on government statistics and trade treaties (GAWD help!) were greatly assisted by this very good smoke. By the way, I suspect this stick would pair well with coffee or maybe even a dark beer. Maybe a coffee beer – like Bell’s Java Stout.

As busy and satisfied as I was, I was momentarily lulled into a false sense of cigar safety. That maduro ash hangs on solidly and perhaps deceptively. I suppose there was a good inch and a half of carbon-gray ash sitting atop the stick, simmering wonderfully, when I (carelessly) transitioned from keyboard to waterbottle. My movements toppled the gray column which landed hot side down on the back of my hand. Avoid that if possible! I still bear a small blister from the encounter. Rather than admit a foul on my part, I’ll just say the Folye Maduro is “hand burning good”.

Knock one back when you get a chance. Just, please, knock the ash regularly. You can obtain a Foyle from my friends at Cigars City with low prices, fast shipping, and excellent customer service.

Oh, if you’re not into smoking and writing, perhaps smoking and reading is the thing. I suggest this dark gem would go very nicely with a good book, like mine:

Available at Amazon!

Cheers and happy smoking!

cigars, Davidoff of Geneva, Perrin Lovett, Tampa

Following a lead I happened into what is probably the classiest cigar bar I have ever seen or heard of. Somehow they let me in. So, here I sit at the Davidoff of Geneva flagship store in Tampa – 5,000 square feet of cigar bliss. Holy smokes!

Being in “Rome” I went with a Nicaraguan blend toro:

_20160610_141555

Yes, that is a whack-a-mole game between the cigar and the bar.

This smoke is as awesome as its home here – it has a hint of that earthiness that keeps me coming back to Esteli and Jalapa mixed with the smooth happiness Davidoff is famous for. The gentleman at the counter (Mark) gave me a perfect cut and light though as I wandered around thunderstruck I caused the stick to “canoe” a little. True to excellent form and tradition my cigar auto-corrected with a slight rest. Magnificent!

This story keeps getting better as I write along. The beautiful bartender just brought me …. a coffee… Brought it! Without me getting up. From one of the best stocked bars I’ve ever seen.

There’s a Harley-Davidson/Camacho event unfolding inside and out. A bevy of “Camacho girls” are suiting up as I type. Or suiting down. Not sure. Don’t care.

Despite being a flagship operation this place carries most of the better brands from various makers. (The Camacho hotties keep pouring in…). And, they have tons of inventory all in an open humidor concept like JR’s (but so much nicer).

Two more girls…losing concentration. Good. Great. I may not be able to leave.

boxing, cigars, crime, excercise, fighting, gym, Perrin Lovett

This is more of a fitness update than a funny story. Or maybe it’s visa versa. I just write the stuff…

Since returning to the land of the fit I have dropped 18 pounds (182 with shoes off) since January. I’m about the same weight I was when I graduated high school. Just as strong but older, and slower to recover, and I have to count calories, and … anyway… During college I lived in the gym. When I escaped UGA I was a solid 220 and shockingly powerful. Then came the blissful decline.

Not so long ago I weighed in at a fat and pitiful 255 lbs – that was grossly obese and just plain gross. Late in 2012 I made major changes and have lived at an appropriate weight ever since. Two summers ago I dropped into the low 170s. That was a little light, I think. I wasn’t lifting much but I lost all surface fat and flab. Anyway, again, around this New Year’s Day I found myself at 199.9 lbs. I am proud of my progress. All it takes is a little culinary discipline and time with the heavy iron things.

The other day I handled such devices. After a decent bench-press session (topping out at 275 for 5 reps [not to shabby for 182!]) I did some incline dumbbell presses. My first set was with relatively light weights but I was shaky and off-balance which I attributed to old age and fatigue. I was readying for set number two when some dude walked up and said, “you know you have two different weights there.” So I did! I’m not old and weak, just blind and inattentive. I replaced the heavier one…

Later I decided to finish up with some flyes on the peck deck machine. A real cutie of about 25-30 was using it. She politely asked me if I wanted to work in. Delirious from my previous work I mumbled “yes”. She confidently said something about having a plan. I laughed and started telling her about my foibles with mismatched weights and being old. When I finished my ramble she was gone. I hope my senile babbling didn’t interfere with her plan though I was happy to get the machine all for myself.

Today was a shoulder and arm routine followed by Judo throws (dummy) and bag work. This is excellent cardio training with an even better purpose. I was thinking about Houdini the jihadi, similar street attacks,and how to counter them. Specifically, today I was thinking about how to approach (from behind) multiple thugs beating a victim. Like this:

inusanews.com

The walking sacks of sh!t in black were part of a pack beating the white man with the ripped white shirt (their work). Several others were off camera to the right. I think this was just prior to or just after Houdini’s chase and tackle. It could have been part of the same scene; hard to piece together from the videos. This stuff is real and getting worse by the day. The question in my mind was how would a civilized man respond to such a situation (without crudely resorting to a .45ACP or a Ka-bar – not that those are bad things…).

I had to image a hapless victim. Also, lacking walking sacks of sh!t (SOS) I substituted a line of four six-foot, 200 lbs heavy bags. My plan was to approach the first one (representing the sucker throwing the sucker punch above) slightly off-center and drop a heavy left elbow to the base of the skull/neck area. Note, this is potentially lethal – do not attempt at home. Actually, a mob – even unarmed – can constitute lethal force and a victim or intervening third-party is entitled to meet force with force. Or so it was in the old America. Where was I??? I then planned to slid over to SOS number two and land a right hammer-fist on his neck. Note, these are not “sporting” moves unless, of course, the sport is thug hunting.

Executed correctly this likely would have cleared the street. The other SOS thugs were out for a little fun, not a fight with someone willing to kill from the outset. They would have scattered immediately. If not they would have likely stood stunned thus making easy pickings.

I did not execute correctly – good enough for the street but not without consequences for me in the gym. I started dead centered between my hanging SOSs when I should have been closer to the one on the left. The elbow went off without a hitch though I found myself a little off-balance and perhaps a little further forward than I should have been. I was also closer to fake SOS number two. Rather than a hammer I launched more of a backhand right side jab. This may have worked better given the shortened range. I followed it up immediately with another hard left elbow – more of a power cross than a sweep. It would have worked well, technical imperfections aside.

For the finish I stepped forward and to the side to face off with the remaining fake SOSs. I halted the drill, realizing something was off. At close range and with rapid recoil my side jab had come back and, yes, I punched myself in the mouth… It didn’t stop me from improvising an end for SOS no. 2 and I would like to think in real life I would have continued unabated with the remaining garbage.

As it was, I stopped and pondered my clumsiness. Age? Balance? Blind? What was it? I still can’t come up with an explanation other than”sometimes the bag does hit back…” I loosened a tooth just enough to solicit a drop of blood. It didn’t hurt and has already tightened back up.

Tomorrow I’m going to try to use this rambling, sad story on another hottie with a plan so as to have equipment for myself. That’s my plan.

On a less pathetic note today I received the following fine and FREE t-shirt:

_20160605_192109.JPG

The “MF” stands for “My Father” not something else… “H-2K-CT” stands for the El Centurion, Habano 2000 from My Father Cigars.

If … when I wear this shirt to the gym I’m hoping no further mishaps occur. That’s the moral of this tedious story.  Or not.

This is blog post number 500! The four-year anniversary is approaching – on June 24th. I’m planning some sort of digital party. I’m also planning more and better platform modifications here. I thank you all for your support over these formative years.

500 posts is huge. Most “blogs” peter out after a dozen or so posts. I’ve taken some lengthy breaks but I have always come back stronger than before. There have been continuous updates here since January of 2015.

There are two ways to search my archives:

  1. The Sidebar Archives

If you happen to know when the article you want came out, check with the monthly archives, as pictured here:

nimbus-image-1464803413965

If you’re in the mobile version, scroll to the bottom of any page and select the traditional site. Note: on a mobile device, the regular version is skewed – the sidebar is down at the bottom.

2. “Search”

I cover many different topics here. WordPress does a great job indexing. Just type what you want in the “Search” box and related pieces will appear in chronological order:

nimbus-image-1464803604625

Search and “Go”. Very easy and effective.

Thank you again for everything. I’ll see you for the anniversary, number 600 and, eventually, post 1000!

Cheers,

Perrin

blog, books, Dilbert, James Altucher, Perrin Lovett, perrinlovett.me, writing

I love James Altucher’s advice and style. This morning he sent me an email – an ad for a writing system. I didn’t (don’t) consider it solicitation or spam; it was more entertaining and insightful than a lot of regular articles and columns I read. Heck, I may invest in the system. The Title is How to Become an Addict Like Me. Here’s the intro:

Writing is my guiding philosophy of life.

It’s not a passion or a purpose. It’s the way I live.

Because I write, I think of ideas.

Ideas lead to things I can sell. Writing helps me sell these things.

I live for writing well…

I’m an addict.

If I can’t write well for two days, then something is wrong with my life. If I can’t write well for three days, then I cancel everything until I write.

It makes me happy. Many things make me happy. But every moment of the day is about writing for me. Nothing else. Not money. Not my career. Not my relationships. Not even my kids. Everything else comes in second.

Which sounds like a mental illness. Maybe it is. I love my kids. I will do anything for them. But first… be quiet until I write.

Building the skill of writing is one way I choose myself every day.

Without writing I would have no career and no self-esteem…nothing.

Writing is what put me on LinkedIn’s Top Influencers of 2015 list.

Bill Gates, Richard Branson, and Mohamed El-Erian were ranked #1,#2, and #3 – all are three billionaires.

LinkedIn ranked me #4 because I’m a writer.

  • James Altucher, June 1, 2016.

That short piece resonated with me. I dedicated the month of May to posting at least once blog entry per day here – I failed. I hit 28 out of 31 days – not bad but the quality of what I wrote suffered a bit. Something was wrong. Something is always wrong but that’s how we improve. I should have taken days off. I’m working on as many thing as I can right now. I hope June’s articles are more substantive. I don’t know where I stand on LinkedIn although I do have more than 500 contacts. My Alexa ranking was rising but has fallen rather sharply in the past few months.

Google.

I stand way outside the mainstream (or even the extreme stream) of political thought. Wally does too. Scott Adams from today:

Tina: I saw your political opinion on Facebook and now I think you're an awful person. Wally: What did you think about me before? Tina: I didn't think about you before. Wally: Sounds like I got promoted.

Dilbert (love Dilbert!), Scott Adams, June 1, 2016.

Anyway … that’s the “righting” angle.

As for “writing”, I rarely explain how I come up with my stuff beyond base mention of cigars, booze, and a healthy dose of anger and sarcasm. I was going to do a proper “how-to” article on my writing methodology but I don’t really have the time this morning (late for the gym). And, I rarely write properly anyway – a lot of my work is posted straight from my phone and I do a good deal of talking to text. Messrs. Strunk and White must be aghast. Maybe I can round this out later…

Instead, here is a short list of some tools I use when writing (the write…right way):

A computer, duh (or a phone, pencil, dictaphone, whatever);

Coffee, coffee, coffee (in the morning);

Water (in the evening and as a healthy substitute for ale);

Cigar (really helps unless the ash falls on the keyboard);

Webster’s Collegiate Dictionary;

Black’s Law Dictionary;

Harvard Legal Citation Guide (The Blue Book);

A thesaurus;

Latin Quotes;

Popular Quotes;

Google;

Strunk and White;

Chicago Style Manual;

MLA Manual;

Several other books on making books.

(I may come back and round this out later – you get the point.)

Off to the gym now. A particularly impressive milestone is just around the corner…

The old blog is humming along nicely. This is post number 495 (I have D.C. surrounded, yes). I have a couple of books out now, several more shaping up, and a few score more in the hopper. I’m slower than Christmas but I’m getting there.

Here are a few things I have a mind to produce:

More books. More and better and certainly better sellers (you can help by generously maxing out your credit cards on Amazon;

With the paper copies I’m going to include e-books (like this) and maybe even books on tape (or MP3 or whatever sells these days);

More blog traffic via a constantly improving platform. Many changes to come;

Some sort of live-action forum. The Perrin Lovett Show is on life support over at Youtube. Hopefully this sleeper program will revive one day and gain a little more structure and professional design and consistency. I’m also thinking about web-radio of some sort;

Webinars. Webinars are the future and seem to make some money. We could have cigar webinars, gun webinars, political webinars, even a webinar about guns that shoot cigars at politicians. Heck, the sky is the limit;

and…

I always wanted to teach something. The limited experience I have came with terrific feedback. I’m looking into teaching via Udemy or Pdemy as I selfishly refer to it. Here are some courses you may (or most likely may NOT) see from me on Udemy:

HAPPINESS IS BUYING PERRIN LOVETT BOOKS, $20;

Ashton to Zino, Touring the Cigar Alphabet (this one might happen), $35;

JOHN OATS, JOHNNY CASH AND DVORAK, COMPARATIVE NOTES, with notes…, $15;

HYDRAZINE YOUR PROBLEMS AWAY, $500;

Or, for the more timid…

THORAZINE YOUR PROBLEMS AWAY, $75;

Legitimate Uses of Government (10 sec. course), FREE;

Speling made Ezee, $10;

Seduce Your IRS Auditor, $50;

Live to 100! Speed aging explained, $20;

Batman, books, Perrin Lovett

A fitness update. Earlier in the new year I announced my intention to get back into shape or,rather, into athletic shape from so-so shape. It’s coming together nicely. Since New Year’s I have lost nearly 18 pounds and several notches off the belt. I’ve lost more fat but added muscle in its place. I’ve done it through hard work, dieting and another lifestyle alteration (miss my ales…). In addition to weights and my usual style of dirty boxing/mma I’ve lately added a lot of throws and such. Building Batman here.

WB/DC. Google.

And, I have a new book rapidly shaping up. This one, like The Happy Little Cigar Book, basically wrote itself. Unlike Happy it will feature a decent e-book version for Kindle. Less than a month away I’d say. Prepare the debit cards.

gym, Perrin Lovett, technology

Last night I made my panic posts and noted my evening session at the gym. The weights and such did a lot of good even though they tired me out something fierce. They also induced a late night wakefulness of which I am none to accustomed these days.

So it was that LATE last night or early this morning I fumbled with my phone in an attempt to Google something or another (cannot even remotely remember what…). As I pecked away at the digital keyboard I got one of those silly notices about a “change for the better” or something. You know, when the phone/computer/machine decides something shall change and there is nothing to be done about it.

My keyboard changed. Previously, I had a black-lettered key pad that looked like a mini-typewriter. I was happy with it. In the blink of an insomniac eye I had a new pad – a “softer” one with borderless keys and a green smiley face. I panicked. For an hour I tried to figure out what had happened. I looked at forums. I contemplated a visit to Verizon.

Suddenly and completely unlooked for, I noticed that I liked the new presentation. It is better – easier to use. With a few smartphone adjustments I made the keys a little bigger and the image less “soft”.

PC Adviser.

No idea where I’m going with this .. wait… Yes, the moral is: never panic! At least not over the littlest of things. Sometimes Google knows best. All hail the new lords of tech. Sleeping pills have their place.

Anyway, this morning I set about looking at gym reviews. I’m preparing a move from a small city to a large city (and I’m the man who values solitude…). In addition to increased traffic, crime and pollution, my new home will feature, among other things, a wide variety of places to excercise. I’m familiar with some of them, unfamiliar with others. Thus, I Google.

There are two kinds of gym reviews. The first concerns the gym itself – facilities, hours, staff, patrons. These are generally good – 4 and 5 stars. The bad reviews always have to do with the gym’s billing service, which is always located in Utah and features no customer service whatsoever. It may be there is only one gym billing service in the whole world. I’ve dealt it maybe half a dozen times. I understand the bad reviews.

If only gym owners would improve the way debit cards are charged and memberships are canceled, then they would have nearly all 5-star reviews. Think about that. Or, not. I have to take my smartphone to the gym now. Later…
