The Death of Men’s Suitcases and Other First World Problems

Upon my return from my last jaunt to sunny Florida I noticed signs of wear on my suitcase, which has served me for twenty or more years. Mine is a small soft sided tote from Land’s End. It’s of the size most people would call an overnight bag though it has served me for weeks or even months at a time without issue. It is showing signs of wear and fraying and it will not last through many more trips. I do have a backup – a huge, modern rolling shipping container of a case by American Tourister. That one will almost hold everything I own but it is so large and unwieldy that I rarely if ever use it (see below). I travel light therefore I like smaller bags.

Whilst I perused the Nordstrom website for bargain suits I decided to glance at their luggage selection. I was aghast at what I found. Every single one of their dozens of suitcases has wheels. All of them. (I also noticed many, many “men’s” handbags and purses…….ahem…). I despise wheeled luggage, especially for use by men. One sees them everywhere nowadays. Hoards of poorly dressed, overweight saps lumber through our airports pulling these ugly contraptions. Hotel lobbies are clogged with them. Not only are all of these models ugly, they are huge. Even school children roll their backpacks around on wheels (defeats the point of a backpack). They’ve invaded malls, interstate rest areas, and the workplace. People even roll duffel bags into the gym in acts of self-defeating laziness.

I sought refuge at the Samsonite webpage. There my worst fears were realized. The industry apparently no longer make traditional non-wheeled suitcases! Even the “carry on” bags have wheels and they have “carry” in their name!

I have this crazy theory that if it is so heavy that it needs to be rolled, then one probably could do without it. It’s a suitcase not a box off a cargo ship. No forklift should be required to move it. No man should ever have to roll his suitcase. A woman, perhaps, but not a man. A man should pick his case up by the handle and carry it – like a man. If they happen to travel together the man will invariably carry his bag in one hand while rolling the woman’s with the other.

You know the drill. A man carries his one suitcase on a trip – regardless of destination or duration. A woman carries (has the man carry) her suitcase, another suitcase, a third suitcase, a garment bag, a makeup bag, a cooler, a tote, a backpack (always open), her purse, a backup purse, several loose plastic grocery bags full of unidentifiable material, some trendy novel, and umbrella, a pack of cookies, a teddy bear, two pillows, and a quilt. Frequently, upon packing the car with all that feminine stuff, a man discovers there is no room left inside the car for him.

The luggage industry, like so many others, seems now to cater to a 100% clientele of women, children, and metrosexuals/gays. There’s nothing wrong with that per se, except that we men are left outside the bag check stand entirely. I don’t want and will not use an Ironman elementary school backpack nor a 400 pound pink box mounted on tractor tires. My dad, rest his soul, carried (picked up off the ground by the damn handle) a manly man’s suitcase. It was hard sided, bland, simple, and functional. That’s what I want.

My parents had a Samsonite set like this in the 1970s. Dad’s was the big one. No wheels anywhere.

This thing needs a “wide load” escort truck with flashing lights and flags.

Now my problem is compounded. I need a new suitcase in a world where there are none left from which to choose. Must I search Craigslist, second-hand shops, or yard sales for ancient relics of the lost luggage age? Looks like it. That, or use duct tape on my old Land’s End bag.

As the years roll by and as society crumbles I notice problems like this are growing. In stores like Nordstrom it is getting difficult to find clothes that are not the uniforms of rappers, hipsters, walruses, or little boys. I’d like a plain blue t-shirt – nothing about NASCAR, thug life, or Batman (cool as his is). It’s becoming harder to smoke a cigar outdoors – or even in a cigar shop. Many “cigar” stores are merely discount cigarette outlets or hookah lounges for tattooed, low-rent felons. Have you seen a modern automobile?

My SUV, a gift from my divorce, is getting on in age. It runs fine and serves me well but I have slowly began to plan for its replacement. This experience has been worse than the luggage debacle. Every single car, truck or SUV made by all manufactures all look exactly alike and have the exact same features. They are (with the unaffordable exceptions of the exotic supercars) small, ugly, under-powered, “safety” riddled, and filled with beeping, flashing, talking electronic garbage from a bad sci-fi nightmare. I do not require a backup camera, lane watch mechanisms, auto steering, radar cruise control, crash avoidance, heated seats, a bitchy voice telling me to buckle up, self-parking modes, tracking systems, a black box, Facebook, Bluetooth, chirping birds, or even airbags. Just give me a cup holder and a helluva lot of horsepower, please.

It looks like I will be settling for a 1975 F250 Ranger Hi-boy 4×4 with a carbureted 460. That, or a reconditioned AM General M939. Either of these will have the torque to pull any modern, wheeled suitcase monstrosity. One solution solves another.

Augusta, cigars, Hooters, Masters Tournament, Shinebox

Another terrific Masters week is in full swing. The 80th Tournament commences tomorrow. Today saw an epic Par Three Contest featuring nine hole in one shots – a record. Also a record was the hole in one by Gary Player at age 80! Jimmy Walker won with the lowest score in event history.

The Par 3 Contest is a great way to kick off the Masters. (USATSI)

Last night Shinebox was rocking at Hooters. They’ll be back Friday night.

I hate to admit it but I have soooo many drafts and manuscripts in the hopper – about as many as I have draft articles for this site. Then again, I’m happy to have the material to work with.

Over the past few months I’ve gathered a bit of input from readers, suggestions for making The Happy Little Cigar Book even better. Thank you all. Some want more stories, some more recommendations. Many, if not most, want pictures. I am considering an expanded Second Edition – with pics! I’m also developing ideas for two (or more) Sequels of sorts.

In the existing book I tossed out the idea of Cigar Stories, wall to wall tales about cigars and the folks who smoke them. I’ve certainly heard and lived enough for another volume. Another possibility is a guide book to better cigar shops. I figure I can start in America and maybe later tour Europe for yet another edition.

A tour book would require extensive travel, considerable time and expense. As is I am pressed for sorely needed new equipment and software. A GoFundMe page might be in order. I’ll give that one some thought.

Then there are all the works in progress. You’ll need a new bookshelf before I’m done.

Cheers! Perrin.

Back in January I said I was getting back on the fitness bandwagon. I’m on. I’ve dropped from 199+ to 191 pounds. Almost halfway to my happy weight. I’ll be there by Masters. My pants fit again. I feel better.

Actually, right now I feel like I’ve been hit by a truck. The diet is working perfectly. I’m still a little haphazard in my workout routines though. That will work itself out as soon as the weight is off and I decide where I’m taking this program. Right now, when I go, I go all out. Two hours in the gym today and I beat the mess out of myself.

In fact, I hit it so hard I actually turned down a cigar review assignment. Friends, that has never happened! I’m either very disciplined or crippled. I vote for crippled.

Anyway, in the near future look for my professional opinion of the Sindicato Maniac 7×70 by Corona Cigars. It looks like a smaller, lighter Lunatic of JFR make. Like I told the tobacconist today, “Meeh…bif..nebb….pass……” My apologies to everyone.

Avo After Dark

Avo, cigars

My palate is in flux! The other day I reminisced about the Avo No. 2, a fine if exceedingly mild cigar. I’m still shying away from the usual 2-pound Nicaraguan dirt clods though I don’t know why.

Anywho … tonight I settled in for an Avo of a darker variety – a Domaine maduro.

Perrin Lovett.

Yes, dark like the rainy, mild but humid winter evening I found out of doors. I paired mine with a Sweetwater Festive Ale, a delightful ass kicker of a winter seasonal. Fitting, my first dark Avo in a year or more with what may be my last dark “holiday” ale until October. The match was nearly perfect. As an extra odd aside, David Lee Roth’s 1987-1988 Just Like Paradise was playing in my head. Hmmm…

Whereas the old No. 2 is smooth as glass and as inoffensive as Mr. Rogers, the Domaine is just as smooth but with a subdued earthiness and with more discernable independent notes.

The Domaine burns and draws as evenly, effortlessly and consistently as its milder cousin. I did notice that the ash tends to Pac-Man open at first. This generally indicates humidity issues or leaf control problems with a given stick. I consider this a minor issue especially, as here, when the event tapers after the first flicking. After that the Domaine burned “well” compared to the No. 2’s “flawless.” It was more than good enough for me.

I say it burned evenly and I mean it. It did. However, I did note a somewhat discombobulated, puffy ash. This could relate to the tobacco or my smoking conditions – I cannot fault my tobacconist, who keeps a damn near perfect 70/70 all around.

For me the most important aspect of any stick is its taste. This dark, well formed beauty tasted great! I believe she is of mainly Dominican ancestry with a Ecuadorian wrapper. I nearly had my fill of that dirty, earthy, wood smoke I crave in mass quantities. As I said, this flavor is understated, like an unusually powerful but silky Cuban.

I’ve read that some detect a “buttery” as opposed to “creamy” note in the Domaine. I still do not know what that means – no dairy science here – but I will go along. There is an underlying difference, beyond the earthiness, a heavier silk note without any pepper. In a word the taste is “fantastic.”

As a general rule I still will lean towards the soil of the continent and it’s unique, near-rotten aroma. Still, this islander has a place in my humidor and my heart. Another Avo classic if by taste but not name.

Avo No. 2: Where It All Began

Avo, cigars, The Happy Little Cigar Book, Top Shelf Cigar Shoppe

I was in a cigar shop. It was Top Shelf Cigars of Augusta, Georgia. I made my way around the humidor. Fate turned my gaze to the Dominican section in the back. There I happened upon a happy little box – the Avo Classic No. 2. Memories flooded my mind.

As I wrote in The Happy Little Cigar Book the Avo No. 2 was the first premium Cigar I ever purchased. That first encounter was almost eleven years ago. Times and my tastes have changed. Having gone a good while without an Avo I decided to light one up.

Perrin Lovett.

Back then I smoked after a steak dinner. Now I proceeded having just come off the road. The experience was much the same. A few years older and a few pounds lighter I still thoroughly enjoyed this stick.

IMG_20160219_184551655_HDR

Gettin going. Perrin Lovett.

Avo Uvezian is a famed pianist and composer. On a junket to Switzerland in 1983 he had the brilliant idea to craft his own cigar blend. He teamed with Hendrik Kelner from Davidoff. The rest is history.

Gentlemen’s Gazzett notes the Avo Classic “remains a perfect reflection the cigar maker’s credo.” The Cigar Inspector gives it a 4.5 star rating. I agree. This is certainly not my usual fare. I, being now experienced in what I really enjoy, go for fully bodied and, dare I admit, dirtier cigars – the stuff of black Nicaraguan dirt. However, I found the No. 2 as intriguing today as I did in 2005.

The burn and draw are flawless. Once I had it going I did not once have to touch up. My toro natural was as well composed as any work of Uvezian. The smoke is super smooth like a really good Cuban. The taste is a bit milder perhaps – almost “creamy” whatever that denotes. There is nothing milky about it. I equate this to light and smooth. It is a very easy smoke. Any novice can handle it with ease and without fear. I have recommended this more than once as a first cigar. Veterans will relish the simplicity as well.

Along the way a few sublte notes of pepper and other tastes evolved. None were substantial enough to warrant a label of “spicy” however. Their coming and going mingled perfectly with the overall character of the smoke.

I had no steak or other sustenance beyond a brown ale. Oddly enough I pared this very mild cigar with a Maduro Brown Ale from Cigar City Brewing (Tampa, FL). The haphazard blend came off perfectly.

Perfect is how I can best describe the No. 2. It is a perfect companion for a thoughtful evening of reflection, an overdue private conversation, or any moment of relaxation. And, as a bonus, it won’t leave you with “horse breath” as the tobacconist put it over a decade ago.

IMG_20160219_192009685

Smooth unto the end. Perrin Lovett.

From a master composer and a master blender comes a master’s smoke. Enjoy an Avo Classic at your local smoke shop soon – for old times sake or for a smooth balanced delight.

Remember when flying was fun? Neither do I, unless it was far away in the excitement of childhood. Since 9/11 I have flown commercial as little as possible and not once in the past 5 years.

I’m not worried about “terrorists.” I worry about the government. All of the new security theater makes me feel quite unsafe. It’s a personal thing and it goes beyond my general disdain for a system that treats citizens like criminals and criminals like heroes.

Short trip? I drive. Long trip? I drive. Boston isn’t that far away. One thousand miles can be done in a day or so and, as a bonus, when I arrive I don’t have to rent a car!

Where was I? Tragedy, yes. Hundreds are dead following the crash of a Russian airliner in the Sinai. The sh!threads at ISIS have claimed responsibility. Terrorists and politicians always claim responsibility, true or no. The facts are few, the speculation wild.

Assuming the crash was actually terror related, our true friends at the TSSA have pondered even more acts in their play pretend airport screening processes.

None of this will bother me as I cruise the mountains on I-81, good coffee, gun and cigar all at the ready. It does weigh on my libertine sensibility and common sense. And, I feel for the flying public, complacent as most may be. I also felt bad for the little pigs in the straw and twig houses.

The Fatherland Security crowd is touting new measures both “seen and unseen.” You will see the burly agent molest the pretty college girl at the metal detector. You won’t see his friends rummage through your bags in search of pawn-worthy merchandise.

A DHS official, who asked not to be identified because he’s not authorized to expand on the secretary’s statement, said the new measures would be phased in as quickly as possible.

“This is all within TSA’s capabilities, within their power, within their authorities and resources,” the official said.

…

“Obviously we could dial it all the way up and say you can’t bring anything at all in your carry-on, but that’s not workable, and it’s going to make everyone very angry,” the official said.

Not everyone would be angry. Sheep never seem angry. I wouldn’t be the least bit miffed, at the rest area outside of Jacksonville. As for the flyers, why not have them all travel bagless and nude? This would certainly reduce the likelihood of a bomb being brought onboard and it would make the co-eds much more accessible for groping.

19475_TSA_Frisks_Little_TerroristFight’n Tha Tarh-ists. Google.

Here’s the rub. This rank speculation centers on an incident involving a Russian, not American, plane in the Middle East, not the Midwest. It’s, for alarmist sake, being presupposed the work of ISIS. No real facts yet, if you recall. But, let us assume, for a moment, it’s all truth.

The facts about ISIS are known. That club was founded, funded, trained and supported by the CIA and other American alphabet outfits – all with your taxes. The wars in Iraq and Afghanistan having fizzled and the Banksters and the MIC needing new profits, ISIS was developed in order to stir the pots in places like Syria and Libya.

So, bases on our assumption, the TSSA is plotting more restrictions on you based on something done by the CIA. Tell me again of the wonders of government. This is a page straight out of Hitler’s playbook: a series of false flag operations to start wars and simultaneously subdue the home folk. It’s a proven plan.

My plan also works. The TSSA has yet, YET, to interrupt my weekend road trip to Winston-Salem. If and when they do, I advise them to bring ISIS along for support. They’ll need it.

On a completely unrelated note: this posting was field both by my demented imagination and failing intellect and by coffee and a Gurkha Reserve 6×60. What a great smoke! Smooth, strong and well constructed. The cigar set will appreciate my fortitude in this undertaking pre breakfast.

Cheers!

Awesome Autumn Activities

Happy first day of fall!

From today until the end of December is my favorite time of year.  I’ve heard more than a few of you agree from time to time.  Here is a short list of things that makes the fall incredible:

  1. Cooler weather.  Down South it’s nice not to sweat as much.
  2. Scenery.  How great is it to take a drive or a hike and look at the colorful fall foliage?
  3. Football.  In person, on TV or on the radio.
  4. Fall brews.  Oktoberfests.  Pumpkin this.  Spice that.  Christmas ales around the corner.
  5. Fall cigars.  Beyond a few (Oktoberfest by Quesada) maybe there aren’t too many fall specific sticks.  But, try combining No. 5 here with No. 4 and No. 8 one evening – you’re welcome.
  6. Hunting.  I don’t get out as often as I used to or much as I should but I never regret waiting in a blind or walking in the woods.  Fall can also be a great fishing season (stripers anyone?).  The proceeds of this entry go well with No. 4.
  7. Sleeping with the windows open.  See also: driving windows down.  Give the AC a rest.
  8. Sitting by a fire.  Outside.  With a beer.  In that cool weather.  Ahhh…
  9. Holidays.  Brings out the kid in all … most … of us.
  10. Raking leaves.  Maybe not as much as the others…

I’m sure you can think of many more to add.

Cheers!

One week ago I loosed upon the unsuspecting public Viva Vivalo!, chronicling the life and great success of Patrick Vivalo. As usual, I make a few mistakes.  Patrick kindly corrected me in that his awesome sticks are crafted in Honduras (not the D.R.) and that, while he has a special lineup for 23 elite shops, better shops everywhere carry his wares.  If you read the article you will find these changes seamlessly blended in.

Also, [drumroll please…] I am working on an interview of sorts with Jose Blanco and unnaturally beautiful Emma Viktorsson of Senorial Cigars.  This shall be developed in my usual slow pate.
