We’re having so much civilized fun in Augusta right now I had almost forgotten about the outside world. I also forgot that only 18 months ago I had not heard of Jordan Spieth. Spieth it seems forgot all about the winds that have held all but four (4!) men under par this week. Masters magic, majestic and memorable.

Anyway, this morning as I glanced around the internets, two stories caught my eye. That’s how my mind works – I like piecing together seemingly unrelated items of information. Many organizational thanks to Matt Drudge.

Things must be a bit slow in Boston this weekend. The Globe, having run out of real news, decided to run a lampoon front page featuring the horrors of Trumpzilla:

The main fake story concerns Trump’s pet issue of illegal immigration. It’s a pet because Americans are growing sick of the related problems; they’re tired out from five decades of betrayal from Washington by everyone from Ted Kennedy to Ronald Reagan to Marco Foamio. A byline says “riots continue”. There would be riots. There will be riots. There are riots now. We grow tired of riotous behavior and other criminality.

Perhaps that thought subconsciously attracted me to another headline story: the volunteer militia is growing. An IndyStar reporter sites a “study” by the Southern Poverty Communism Center (talk about a lampoon) which shows (without mentioning numbers) volunteer militia ranks have grown by 37% in the past two years. The Star maintains neutrality; the Southern Commie Loons are mortified; I am relieved.

I also have numbers – estimates from the Census. Based on my reading of the following graph, I estimate the strength of the militia, unorganized, at around 30 – 40 million men. That makes it the largest armed force in the world.

I draw my estimate from that left side (male) segment from just below age 20 to just above age 40. That provides the elementary math strength of the combined State militias. Georgia law holds: “the unorganized militia shall consist of all able-bodied male residents of the state between the ages of 17 and 45 who are not serving in any force of the organized militia…” O.C.G.A. 38-2-3(d)(2006). All states have similar laws with slight age variances.

This estimate excludes men serving in the Imperial military and those few thousands actually serving in the organized state militias. Think of it as the reserve militia force. Perhaps you are a member. I am. Thank you for your service.

We many men are the militia contemplated in the Constitution. The same militia which stood guard over the old Republic until the 20th Century (with the terrible exception of 1861-1865). The “well regulated militia” of Second Amendment lore.

In truth, the militia is almost completely unregulated – so as to be defined as “unorganized”. That is a legal problem brought about by a century of socialism. Demographically and obesity-wise, the group is terribly unfit. That would be a product of processed foods and television. Still, we are exceedingly well armed – a failure of the Commies to institute that final plank of the Manifesto. That single failure will be lethally critical. When the riots begin in full we will be ready. Hell, some of us are looking forward to it.

In the meanwhile the sun in up on a near perfect day in Augusta. The winds should be dying down a bit. Good luck to Spieth and company. We’ve got one more terrific day of suspended reality!

Another terrific Masters week is in full swing. The 80th Tournament commences tomorrow. Today saw an epic Par Three Contest featuring nine hole in one shots – a record. Also a record was the hole in one by Gary Player at age 80! Jimmy Walker won with the lowest score in event history.

Spring and Other Phenomena

Today we observe the vernal equinox in the Northern hemisphere, better known as the first day of Spring. It’s a big deal for gardeners and sun worshipers, both beachy and pagan. Today also marks the feast of Palm Sunday, the commemoration of Jesus’s entry into Jerusalem and the beginning of Holy Week. Easter is coming fast.

There are but five days until the release of what may be the best Batman movie ever, judging by the last two trailers.

In the Garden City preparations are almost finished for the 2016 Masters Tournament and related festivities. The azaleas are blooming. John Daly is prepping his RV. The big tent at Hooters will be up any day.

If you’re in town the evening of Tuesday, April 5th, you can attend the annual Rock Fore! Dough charity concert in Columbia County. When I returned to Augusta nine years ago the event truly rocked. Cheap Trick headlined that year. There was a promise of energetic entertainment each year for locals and tourists alike.

Then one year they invited Darius Rucker. They also changed the venue to Columbia County as I mentioned. There people are more than accepting of pop country. Thus began the only tragedy of Masters week. Rock Fore! is now little more than the Darius Rucker, post Blowfish, and friends crooner fest. This year I think Darius will be joined by such dynamic acts as: the Whining Warbles, Toothless Billy, Tight Pants Hick, and some other spiked-hair hillbillies. It’s just what the bored, pill addicted soccor moms of Evans want. The good news is they will all be in a wine and whine induced stupor the next day as we enjoy the Par Three fun.

Just Who Are The Animals Here?

Congress, the Georgia General Assembly, and the United Nations have some competition in the running for world’s dumbest governing body. Meet the city commission of Augusta-Richmond County, Georgia: ten utter morons and one near-useless mayor. It is alleged that one member has a triple digit IQ but no one is certain which it is. The rumor could be a hoax.

The commission itself could be considered a hoax, and a very funny one, but for its propensity for unending dastardly deeds. Ages ago Georgia’s second city was governed by an all white good old boys club. Following integration and the introduction of some good old black boys, the body degenerated into a constant racial brouhaha. Now, fully diversified, the group serves no known noble purpose; their actions, mostly petty, serve their own pathetic needs. The public, largely uninterested, is largely ignored. Again, but for brooding evil, this would be an appropriate relationship.

While normally content to lavish themselves with ultra-expensive “working” vacations in foreign resorts (no where better to discuss civic beautification than Hawaii) and looting the city Treasury for free gas (got the card, gotta use it!), they occasionally stumble into darker territory.

They give public roads to private clubs free of charge. They tailor local laws to the desires of private clubs. They subsidize brutality and incompetence negatively impacting the public. They run the taxpayers through the ringer: property taxes maxed out they’ve turned to charging exorbitant charges for rain water, air and sunlight.

Now the fools are coming for the animals. Take your furry friends and run.

The city’s animal control ordinance is due for its first revision since about 1970. Last year you probably noticed all the stray dogs, pigs, and deer running amuck at the Masters Tournament. The problem (real problem, really, for real) shall soon be solved! Sure, they’ll solve it in the most expensive manner possible and with tactics to make the SS giddy, but solve it they will. Only a vote away.

Henceforth all local animals will be registered with the government. All for the low, low price of $50 per animal, per year – forever. All funds will go directly to the Ritz Carlton Maui and BP.

There use to be high regard for things like privacy, private property, freedom from prohibition against unlawful taking and similar atrocities. Today the Supreme Court would likely declare this a perfectly normal tax and nothing more.

Worse, there shall be mandatory microchipping of all critters in the county. While the benefits (name one) of the mark of the beast are debatable, the cost is not. Just another tax though – and you did vote these bastards into office. Time to pay the crack pippers.

Many municipalities nationwide are enacting and enforcing the chip laws. As the Chronicle astutely notes: “Down at Animal Control, it seems to be less about the animal than the control.” They’re coming for your kids next, by the way. Then, you. 666! 666!

Worst of all the new law would give law enforcement new and Draconian powers. Any animal found outside without a collar and tag is subject to being detained and hauled into animal court. There, Dr. Euthanasia will dispense with rapid and final “justice.” One would think, with the advent of the microchip, tags would be irrelevant. The dog catcher could carry a scanner. “Beep, boop! Fido belongs to Mrs. Smith just down the street.” This isn’t about thinking or else it would not be debated by the retards at the commission.

Pets on your private property or in your home are not safe either. The new law would allow authorities to enter private property without cause, without notice, and without a warrant or any pretense of Due Process. Take that, Fourth Amendment!

I call “Bullshit!” on this whole scheme. I like animals and I live in the Augusta area. There is no problem with two, four, six or eight legged varmits that can’t be addressed by current law or, better yet, by common sense. A dangerous dog or bull, loose and menacing, may be dealt with as needed. And, these instances are exceedingly rare. They do not require a $50 license fee to solve – a ten cent bullet will work every time.

You know where I stand against government and its hellish affairs. I’ll dispense with my usual rhetoric. I speak for the voiceless animals – not one of whom is guilty of voting for mindless savages.

Over the years I’ve observed a vast host of animals in urban settings, to include: dogs, cats, mice, frogs, snakes, birds, lizards, spiders, bees, ants, squirrels, beavers, turtles, aligators, possums, raccoons, rabbits, foxes, coyotes, deer, horses, fish, and cows. Not one I ever saw caused any trouble.

These are God’s creatures! Many and most roamed freely long before people ever visited Georgia. Leave them the hell alone!

If anyone must be euthanized, then I gladly offer up the members of the Augusta commission. Bastards!

I’m taking a little break from my usual anarchist ramblings to update you, my beloved readers, on a wonderful development in the cigar world.

The other evening I stopped by Top Shelf Cigars in Evans/Martinez (Augusta), Georgia for a very special event. Patrick’s cigars are available at better shops across the nation. 23 special shops nationwide were chosen for this inaugural rollout – being the best in Georgia and the Southeast, Russell’s place was a natural tour stop.

Patrick Vivalo, the namesake of Vivalo Cigars, graced Top Shelf with his electric presence and his fabulous smokes.

As an added bonus Patrick’s dad, Bob, was on hand. He recalled Patrick’s early years – the living room fire, the arrests, the drugs – no, wait, that was me. Actually, this very personable fellow beamed with pride as he acknowledged his son’s achievements.

Patrick got his start in cigars working retail at JR’s in New Jersey. He quickly progressed to Rocky Patel’s outfit in the early 2000s (then known as Indian Tabac). Under Rocky’s tutelage he developed his own sense of flavor and integrity and blended some of the finest sticks in the industry.

A short while back he crafted his own personal blend as a matter of curiosity. Sensing genius at work, someone demanded to try Patrick’s proprietary smokes. A legend was born. In March of this year Patrick launched his own label.

“I have always waited for the day to do my own thing and the day is finally here,” said Vivalo to Halfwheel. “I just want to make great cigars for people to enjoy. After that, I don’t know much else to say except that I hope people enjoy my creations!” Vivalo, quoted in HalfWheel (2015). There are a “total of five vitolas (Vivalos), as the original Vivalo Serie Exclusivo Lonsdale (6 x 44) was joined by a 5 1/2 x belicoso, 4 7/8 x 50 robusto, 6 x 60 gordo and 5 1/2 x 54 robusto grande, all of which are sold in boxes of 20.” HalfWheel, Id.

“The cigars are a blend of a Jalapa Colorado shade wrapper from Nicaragua, binder from Estelí, Nicaragua, and Nicaraguan filler from Estelí and Jalapa.” Id. As I understand things, Rocky kindly allows assembly of these beauties at his Honduran facility.

“I believe with my passion, dedication and my attention to detail that I will succeed as a cigar maker. Again, I can’t express my gratitude enough towards those who have paved the way for me to be the person I am today.” Vivalo, in The Cigar Authority (2015). The cigars speak for themselves. Patrick’s humble yet excited demeanor (with his Dad cheerleading) speaks to his honest gratitude and excellent personality. I think he will succeed and I wish him the best.

Patrick blends ever size of cigar with a slightly different taste and experience; this is a nod to the great Cuban tradition. He described the importance of the process:

Nine times out of ten, with the non-Cuban market, you could pick up a 38 ring-gauge, a 50 ring-gauge, and a 60 ring-gauge and the bigger you go the mellower you get. The smaller ring-gauges are going to be more of your powerhouse. I felt that blending each size to the specific ring-gauge and length really brings out the subtle nuances in each size.

My Gordo was exceptionally smooth and even throughout with a very Cuban-like mellow, delicious flavor. The stick drew perfectly and burned well with no touch-ups needed. I was very impressed with this first effort. A new line is under development. If it is half of the original is, it will be a knockout. Try one soon.

Former Mississippi State Baseball standout, Kent Daniel, described the Vivalo Robusto as one of his favorites. His absolute favorite is Patrick’s Bellicoso. “We are very proud of [Patrick] for bringing his blends to Martinez, Georgia,” Daniel said as he puffed away on the Robusto.

As a post script, I am now friends with Emma Viktorsson, of Cigar Fantasia. Emma is a veritable Swedish Valkyrie – far better looking than young Vivalo (sorry, Patrick, she is). If you’re familiar with Jose Blanco and Senorial Cigars, you probably know her work. Should I make a press appearance at the IPCPR International show in New Orleans next month I intend to interview her (or at least drool and stutter politely). Time will tell.

1983’s Burning Down the House by Talking Heads was a bizarre, new-wavy love song of sorts; the pseudo cultural ramblings of an odd man for some 80’s woman. Maybe a woman like Caitlyn Jenner – hey, it’s America.

Early yesterday morning the newly built luxury home of a hundred or more elderly people in suburban (Augusta) Georgia burned down. Ninety-one year old Dorothy Carpenter died in the fire.

The damage is as bad as one would expect from the Chronicle’s photograph.

The Fire Department did a fantastic job and saves dozens of lives. An 82-year-old woman was pulled alive and in relatively good shape from the rubble seven hours later. Miracles do happen today, praise God.

County, State and BATFE officials have just began their investigation. At a preliminary news conference the Fire Chief stated the fire started big and spread fast. Thus, the massive damage to the structure. I have no idea what started the conflagration but two theories stand out – arson or a mechanical/electrical failure.

County officials were quick to point out the building was designed to code and that a certificate of occupancy was issued prior to the recent opening. The resort has only been in business a few months.

I suspect the structure was not up to code or either the code is grossly inadequate. I will leave further discussion until after the investigation. I will say this: my gym is next door and I watched the place go up. Like so many modern buildings, it was built seemingly overnight. It was like the Two Lazy Pigs Construction Company threw it up of twigs and straw – both flammable.

I understand places like this charge an arm and a leg in way of rent for the convenience, etc. offered by the home. This incident may cause some to think twice about placing a loved one in such abode rather than allowing them to live with their family.

The loss of life and memories is regrettable. The fact this wasn’t much worse is amazing.

I survived another Masters Tournament! And what an affair it was – one of the best in great period of bests! Tiger didn’t win but he did greatly improve over his recent forays. None of my favorites made it either. Hats off to Jordan Spieth. What a showing!

Shinebox is disappointed as you must be that I lack the technological know how to post it. It’s coming along with blog-related videos. Remember, I have the tech skills of a possum.

As a happy aside – we just celebrated tax day! Another best of best days but some are perplexed: “As they rush to file their taxes by April 15, Americans are rightfully frustrated with the complexity of the 74,608-page-long federal tax code.” The Not-So-Affordable Care Act (just another tax) added a measly three thousand pages… What’s there to complain about?

Ah! The sun is out, the azaleas are in bloom and John Daly is in front of Hooters. It is Masters week in Augusta! Tomorrow they commence the 79th Tournament. Today I make my predictions. It’s hard with such a stellar field of talent. Here I go:

I will always maintain Miguel Jimenez is the baddest man to ever swing a golf club. With him anything is always possible. Last year he finished with a career best fourth place. Let’s call him my number one pick.

To be realistic, I have a short list of contenders. The Southerner in me is pulling for Bubba. I’m also a big Patrick Reed fan – his star has been rising of late. As a former big guy I can’t help but like Kevin Stadler. Then there’s Rory, Adam Scott, and everyone else. Incredible talent. I give Tiger until Friday.

If you’re in the Garden City on Friday night, stop by Hooters and see my buddy’s band, Shinebox. Another friend of mine will supply the cigars. It’s a guaranteed good time. Just leave your drone at home…

Should you have the honor of attending this years Masters Tournament you may breathe easy – no pesky drones will disturb your golf gazing. I doubt you were concerned to begin with. You probably hadn’t even considered the idea.

Never apt to miss out on a non-issue the idiots of the Augusta City Commission has outlawed the (private) use of unmanned aircraft during this year’s tournament. “Hoping to prevent a drone disruption at this year’s Masters Tournament, Augusta commissioners approved a county-wide ban on launching or operating the remote-controlled aircraft between April 2 and April 13.” Susan McCord, Drone ban in effect April 2-13, Augusta (GA) Chronicle, March 18, 2015.

The reasoning behind the ban is as solid as the air above the Augusta National: “Drones ‘have gotten very sophisticated,’ and Augusta has a ‘very big, international event’ coming up, said sheriff’s Col. Robert Partain.” This is as logically connected as saying there are a lot of people in India and pillows are very soft, thus we must own lawnmowers…

I was not present for the drafting, discussion or voting on this ordinance. I really don’t think that matters. The thing smells funny. The Chronicle mentions a single incident whereby an event was disrupted by a drone – one event in Europe. I have heard of no threat posed by non-government drones in America. Government drones are another story; see: Don’t Drone Me, Bro! and Droning On and On.

Other American cities (Charlottesville, VA, Syracuse, NY, etc.) have previously banned drones. However, their bans are directed towards drones nefariously used by government agents in an effort to defend civil liberties. Charlottesville, home of Thomas Jefferson’s home and University, has a “long tradition of promoting civil liberties.” Augusta has a long tradition of the opposite kind.

Here follows the pertinent and sensible resolutions of Syracuse’s ordinance:

BE IT RESOLVED, that this Resolution declares that no agency of the City of Syracuse, nor any agents under contract with the City, will operate Drones in the airspace over the City of Syracuse until federal and state laws, rules and regulations regarding the use of Drones are adopted that adequately protects the privacy of the population as guaranteed by the First and Fourth Amendments to the U.S. Constitution; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Syracuse Common Council urges our Federal and State officials to create and adopt such laws, rules and regulations regarding the use of Drones which ensures Constitutional protections of individuals; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that, to the extent permitted by law, it is the policy of this Common Council that no Drones will be purchased, leased, borrowed, tested or otherwise utilized by the City of Syracuse or its agencies, directly or through contract, until such Constitutional safeguards are in place, the appropriate personnel are trained and fully authorized by the FAA to safely operate Drones and that the Corporation Counsel of the City of Syracuse certifies that all City of Syracuse personnel engaged in the use of Drones have been trained in federal, state and local privacy laws, regulations, and enforcement mechanisms affecting drone operations and any data collected by drone operations…

Note that this ordinance is aimed at ensuring “Constitutional protections of individuals.” The Georgia version ensures a media monopoly for a single sporting event at the expense of the liberty of hundreds of thousands of individuals in the surrounding area. It is as stupid and illegal as it is unnecessary.

The National naturally desires to keep the most prestigious sporting event in the world private. That is understandable; they have a right to privacy. Happily, their rights and the rights of their patrons and golfers are protected by existing laws. Flying a drone over the property without permission already would constitute a trespass and a nuisance – prohibited by both existing criminal and civil tort law.

Now, should you, as a news reporter, wish to film from the air the crowd entering the National patron gate, you are out of luck. If you’re the President needing to remotely bomb demonstrators (terrorists), no problem. A real estate broker surveying land, not this week. A cop spying on a gardener, sure, why not. Concerned citizen keeping an eye on one of the cops’ illegal roadblocks, you are a criminal. See where this is going?

Something tells me that, if challenged, the Augusta ordinance will fall in Court – after the tournament is over, of course. I have already heard of plans to defy the law. One aviator proposes to use a balloon or kite to launch a camera skyward. Whether the city defines these devices as drones or not they will likely prosecute this man. They will lose. They will face a lawsuit. Those hundreds of thousands of citizens whose liberties have been infringed will be forced to pay damages. Sadly, those citizens will continue to re-elect the Commission. The beat goes on.

If you come to Augusta for the tournament, enjoy it. You’ll have a great, drone free experience. If you live in the Garden City, consider moving somewhere else where your rights are valued.

Summer is in full swing and it’s time for a cigar! Okay, this summer it seems it’s either crazy hot or raining buckets. What is the discerning outdoor cigar smoker to do? Sit in the garage? You’ll find ashtrays, cutters, and lighters ready to go. Unlike at some other tobacco “shops,” on-site cigar enjoyment is actively encouraged here.
