Janet Yellen issued her final official interview as Fed Chairman: Lil High...

Janet Yellen ended her long career at the Federal Reserve with concerns over how high the stock market has surged under her watch.

The S&P 500 has soared 315 percent since the March 2009 bear market lows and about 53 percent since she took over as chair of the central bank in 2004.

Yellen said in an interview with CBS News that market valuations are the source of some concern as she headed into private life following a 14-year Fed career, the last four as the chair. She spoke as the market finally took a breather from what has been a breathtaking move higher, with the Dow industrials falling 666 points Friday.

“Well, I don’t want to say too high. But I do want to say high,” she said. “Price/earnings ratios are near the high end of their historical ranges.”

In addition to elevated equity prices, Yellen also said commercial real estate is “quite high” compared with rents.

Irrational exuberance is what it’s called. Hype and craziness not backed by reality. Stocks too damned high!

Aunt Yellen speaks. 666. Not liking where this is going…

Says she’ll now devote more time to her monkeys… Freaking News.

But not to worry – another wise, Creature-approved acolyte of economic deception will be along Monday… The interests of the bankers are in good hands. And, it’s really them that matter the most, right?

Better Not Get Diarrhea

Tags

This has nothing to do with Eagles’ fans tonight and tomorrow morning.

Rather it’s of the coming crackdown on illicit drug users – and, by that, I mean you.

Your days of getting high off anti-diarrhea medicines are over.

People have been taking Imodium A-D, also known as loperamide, to maintain their addictions or self-treat withdrawal symptoms, the Food and Drug Administration said. The drug can induce a high that is comparable to heroin, morphine or oxycodone, and it’s a cheaper alternative. Consumers can buy 400 generic pills for just $10.

While the recommended dose is 8 milligrams a day for over-the-counter use and 16 milligrams a day for prescription use, drug addicts are taking 50-300 capsules each day, according to a 2016 study published in the Annals of Emergency Medicine journal.

“We continue to receive reports of serious heart problems and deaths with much higher than the recommended doses of loperamide,” the FDA said, “primarily among people who are intentionally misusing or abusing the product, despite the addition of a warning to the medicine label and a previous communication.”

Forget the heart. What does 300 pills do to the intestines? I would ask, “who could do this?” but we have people eating Tide pods… The lowest common denominator strikes again!

Anyway, look forward to major regulation soon, of life and movements. Imodium will join good cold medicine behind the counter, with limits, registries, fines, higher prices, explanations, guilt trips, “safe” alternatives that don’t work, and maybe a few “accidents.”

You’d better stock up not. That, or you better not get sick.

Things to Know About Super Bowl LII

The Patriots win. Again.

Number six.

I said the Patriots would be in SB LI. They were. I said they’d beat the … ? … whoever they beat last year. They did. Then, last year, immediately after that predictable victory, I said the people in Boston were serious about coming back this year, this month, tomorrow. (Consult the Feb. 2017 archives for that and so much more). They meant it and they did it. They’re serious about winning again too. They will.

nimbus-image-1517682222528

Still got some seats left! At a bargain price… ESPN.

And, still they won’t be finished. I’ve said previously that Brady and Co. would win number six to tie the Steelers for all-time wins and then win no. 7 for the record. I’m not sure 7 will follow 6 in succession next year but anything’s possible. Then, this particular dynasty might (might…) be finished. Time will tell. It’s also telling that Brady, Gisele’s alleged protestations aside, also predicts 2 more SB wins.

Drudge.

*Last year I ran some memes about the Falcons and their “heartbreaking” loss, which I commenced dropping before they actually lost. It now occurs to me that eagles and falcons are near aviary twins. So, I could repeat the memes, merely striking one for the other, name-wise. I won’t. I’m not that cruel and it’s not necessary.*

There’s a reason for all this, for the unstoppable perfection. I covered that pretty well last year for SB LI. A few days ago I heard some sports commentator expound that even the Pats haters should take a moment to appreciate the uniqueness of what we’ve witnessed these past two decades out of NE; it’s something special in sports history. Most won’t and that’s okay. In fact, it may be better so.

One of the two positions must be true: 1) either the Pats don’t notice and/or don’t care about the opposition opinions, or; 2) they feed off of it. If it’s the later, then there’s a lot of food for the feast: it really is New England vs. The World.

BOSTON (CBS) – “New England vs. Everybody” is more than just a shirt – it’s reality, according to a new poll.

A survey from Monmouth University finds that 37 percent of Americans are rooting for the Philadelphia Eagles to win Super Bowl LII, compared to just 16 percent who want another Patriots championship.

If you hate them down now, they will become more powerful than you could possibly imagine…

Powerful like tomorrow evening. 28 – 24, NE.

Cigars, a Credit to the Mind

Tags

, , , , ,

Happy February 2018! I seems we’ve not had a cigar related post, here, perhaps all year. That cannot stand! So, I gladly present you with the following: maybe not directly on cigar point, but close enough.

From Taki’s Mag and Bunky Mortimer III: Up in Smoke:

Smoking is a physical pleasure that reminds us that life is not merely a physical affair. It is a debit against the health of the body that credits to the health of the mind. As such, in its own small way, it is a reminder of the afterlife. It is also part of a civilized terrestrial life, and European life in particular.

Please click the link and read the whole thing at Taki’s, they deserve the traffic. And we deserve the thoughts. (You DO read Taki, right?)

The article is primarily about cigarettes but we can safely extrapolate to cigars, maybe all the safer – not even sure about the debit side – the credit speaks for itself.

It’s a reminder that, in this day and age of signaling all manner of fake and frivolous virtue, the natural and finer things are frequently shunned. Black is white, up is down, war is peace, and so forth. Smoke it out, I say.

Mention is also made of P.G. Wodehouse (“WOOD-House”), Anglo-American humorist and tobacco user extraordinaire. Wodehouse’s work is set to make a comic return soon, via Vox Day’s Castalia/Arkhaven Comics division. (You DO read, right?!)

More Wooster, less Kartrashian.

And let’s have more like this:

Congress is Like a Train Wreck

Tags

, , ,

That’s always true in the figurative sense. And sometimes – times like today – it is literally so.

The Trump held forth last night before Congress on the State of the Onion.

CSPAN/YouTube.

He used triggering words like “America” and “American.” Naturally upset, some of the 535 criminals and idiots you’ve elected chose to retreat – to West Virginia. In route: a real train wreck:

Train carrying members of Congress — including House Speaker Paul Ryan — hits a truck

A train carrying members of Congress — including House Speaker Paul Ryan — to their legislative retreat in West Virginia hit a truck Wednesday, multiple sources told CNN.

An aide confirmed Ryan was on the train and is fine. Separately, a congressman on the train told CNN most of the staff and members on the train are OK.

“No serious injuries on the train,” another source said, adding there were only “bumps and bruises” for those on the train.

The Amtrak train left Union Station in Washington earlier Wednesday, and was carrying members of Congress, as well as their spouses, some family members and aides to the lawmakers. They are stopped on the tracks outside of Charlottesville, Virginia.

Rep. John Faso, a New York Republican, who was on the train that crashed, said he was able to see the truck that hit the train, and that he was told that injuries were expected from people in the truck, not the train.

“There was (what) looks like a tractor trailer carrying trash that was hit by the train,” Faso, who said he was in the third car of the train, told CNN.

In other words a trainload of garbage hit a truckload of garbage. Sadly word comes the truck driver died. Another case of skunk drivers escaping unscathed with innocents in their wake.
