With Recoveries Like These…

Friday the Commerce Department, as reported by the Wall Street Journal, officially confirmed what many have known for some time – the current, post-financial crisis, recession “recovery” is one of the longest in modern history and THE weakest.

Even seven years after the recession ended, the current stretch of economic gains has yielded less growth than much shorter business cycles.

In terms of average annual growth, the pace of this expansion has been by far the weakest of any since 1949. (And for which we have quarterly data.) The economy has grown at a 2.1% annual rate since the U.S. recovery began in mid-2009, according to gross-domestic-product data the Commerce Department released Friday.

For so many it feels like the recession never ended. This, by the way, was the recession that they never actually admitted had begun. Remember that? The lies? “Bankin’ industry’s never been stronger!” – even as it teetered on the edge of total collapse.

The WSJ provides several informative graphs. In describing the graphs they lay off of the “recovery” talk and correctly label the upward-trending parts of the business cycle as “expansions”. Except, there hasn’t been much of the upward of late.

You’ll immediately note that as time goes by the recoveries (expansions) are steadily getting weaker. This graph notes annual GDP changes. Their next graph shows cumulative changes over decades or, rather, between recessions. By that one, America’s best days were in the 1960s and the 80s/90s. Of course, that particular graph allows one to compute a rough average time between recessions.

Yes, the current “recovery” started seven years ago but the precipitating recession started nearly nine years back. Recovered or not, we’re overdue for another recession. Nice, huh?

This story and the graphs show the strength (or lack thereof) of recovery, not the magnitude of the recessions. The financial crisis was huge. We’re nowhere near being made whole again. And now the entire economy is changing.

If any of the forgoing alarms you (you awake, out there?), you may lay the blame for your concerns at the feet of our friends at the Federal Reserve and our trusty “servants” in Washington. In a world with a responsible government and without a central bank cartel (the USA before 1913) recoveries were as sudden and short-lived as the recessions – both merely punctuated periods of steadier growth. Growth without the benefit of Fed funny money.

Not content with the status quo the Fed and the criminals in D.C. set out to “manage”the economy, which the Fed accomplishes in much the same way a bad drunk “manages” a car. (It goes really, really fast …. until it hits a tree).

Part of their brilliant management scheme for the past nine years has been to foster ridiculous government spending while simultaneously flooding banks (not just American ones) with cash. The banks have not released much to the general economy. Rather, they have played Monopoly and roulette with derivatives and other gambles of their own making. They haven’t played too well, either. Currently there is a race to see which major bank will collapse under its own weight first. Right now it looks like Deutsche Bank but who knows? Then comes another financial crisis. Recession. More funny money. Rinse and repeat.

Those of you who wasted your time watching THE party’s two political conventions, with all the blabbing about seemingly everything, may remember hearing nothing about these issues. They certainly don’t have any solutions to offer. Ron Paul did but the masses wrote him off as crazy and unelectable. Now we have a recovery which is crazy and unsalvageable.

Tax increases and Democrats go together like sunrise and the east. It’s natural, predictable. It’s also disturbing. Like the meme says: “Taxation is theft.” Well, armed robbery really. The point is – they want your money and they always have a plan to get it.

Americans for Tax Reform put together a list of some of Hillary’s proposed tax increases. I say “some of” because they’re will surely be more if she is elected. Here’s the majority of it:

Hillary Clinton has made clear she intends to dramatically raise taxes on the American people if elected. She has proposed an income tax increase, a business tax increase, a death tax increase, a capital gains tax increase, a tax on stock trading, an “Exit Tax” and more (see below). Her planned net tax increase on the American people is at least $1 trillion over ten years, based on her campaign’s own figures.

Hillary has endorsed several tax increases on middle income Americans, despite her pledge not to raise taxes on any American making less than $250,000. She has said she would be fine with a payroll tax hike on all Americans, she has endorsed a steep soda tax, endorsed a 25% national gun tax, and most recently, her campaign manager John Podesta said she would be open to a carbon tax. It’s no wonder that when asked by ABC’s George Stephanopoulos if her pledge was a “rock-solid” promise, she slipped and said the pledge was merely a “goal.” In other words, she’s going to raise taxes on middle income Americans.

Hillary’s formally proposed $1 trillion net tax increase consists of the following:

Income Tax Increase – $350 Billion: Clinton has proposed a $350 billion income tax hike in the form of a 28 percent cap on itemized deductions.

Business Tax Increase — $275 Billion: Clinton has called for a tax hike of at least $275 billion through undefined business tax reform, as described in a Clinton campaign document.

“Fairness” Tax Increase — $400 Billion: According to her published plan, Clinton has called for a tax increase of “between $400 and $500 billion” by “restoring basic fairness to our tax code.” These proposals include a “fair share surcharge,” the taxing of carried interest capital gains as ordinary income, and a hike in the Death Tax.

But there are even more Clinton tax hike proposals not included in the tally above. Her campaign has failed to release specific details for many of her proposals. The true Clinton net tax hike figure is likely much higher than $1 trillion.

For instance:

Capital Gains Tax Increase — Clinton has proposed an increase in the capital gains tax to counter the “tyranny of today’s earnings report.” Her plan calls for a byzantine capital gains tax regime with six rates. Her campaign has not put a dollar amount on this tax increase.

Tax on Stock Trading — Clinton has proposed a new tax on stock trading. Costs associated with this new tax will be borne by millions of American families that hold 401(k)s, IRAs and other savings accounts. The tax increase would only further burden markets by discouraging trading and investment. Again, no dollar figure for this tax hike has been released by the Clinton campaign.

“Exit Tax” – Rather than reduce the extremely high, uncompetitive corporate tax rate, Clinton has proposed a series of measures aimed at inversions including an “exit tax” on income earned overseas. The term “exit tax” is used by the campaign itself. Her campaign document describing this proposal says it will raise $80 billion in tax revenue, but claims some of the $80 billion will be plowed into tax relief. How much? The campaign doesn’t say.

This is, all of it, insane. The federal government already spends about $4Trillion per year – mostly on welfare and warfare (neither Constitutional). What could they possibly want or need with another $Trillion? And, the increases, even if they all became law, wouldn’t raise that much anyway. Taxes affect behavior. Increased taxation of income, for example, will cause people and businesses to curtail their incomes so as to avoid paying the tax. Thus, there is less money to steal … tax as a result.

Businesses (the big ones) don’t really pay their income taxes. They pass them on to you and you pay them through higher prices and fees. If $275 Billion is raised, it will be on your backs.

I love the “Fairness tax” idea. To them simplification always means paying more. Period. It reminds me of an old joke from the 90s – Bill Clinton’s simplified, revised tax form. It was just two lines in its entirety: 1) “How much did you make?” and 2) “Send it in.” So simple. So fair.

These are merely proposals. Most likely would not make it through Congress. Still, if the left has shown anything during the past century or so, it is that they get what they want – or, at least some of it. Right now, as usual, they want yours. Fair enough?

I’ve written in the past few months, briefly, about the FDA’s new authority over and campaign against the cigar industry. I was planning a larger, comprehensive story on the new regulations and the potentially devastating impact they will likely have. Christopher Westley, writing at mises.org, has done a lot of the heavy lifting for me – and you.

The FDA estimates that small businesses like El Titan, which produces 250,000 to 300,000 cigars per year, will pay $278,000 to $397,000 in application fees and other costs during the initial compliance period. While El Titan will be able to pass some of those fees on to the companies that hire it to make private-label smokes, it will still need to raise prices.

The new rules will have the greatest impact on companies less than a decade old, which will be required to apply for pre-market approval at an average cost of $6,560 per application, according to FDA estimates.

These are extraordinarily high prices to pay – for nothing. The FDA asserts it has a duty to protect public health. So, cigars will now be subject to the same rigorous but useless testings and waiting periods that, as-is, keep new drugs away from needy patients, often until after the patient dies. Some doctors estimate the FDA process kills more people than it helps. Smoke on that.

As good as his article is, it doesn’t even begin to cover some of the other nonsense regulations which will start taking effect soon (like next week soon). I will probably still someday add my own spin on the subject. I may wait to see how it actually plays out in CigarLand on a daily basis. Higher prices and aggravation are assuredly in store for all.

Westley does call it what it is, perfectly – fascism.

As if the emails, fundraising, felony-dodging, Jew-bashing (was that just part of the Bernie bashing?), terrorist courting, and other shenanigans weren’t enough, a Hillary delegate pretty much admitted that the Democrats want an outright ban of firearms and a deletion of the Second Amendment. She also admitted they think the people are stupid.

“Saying you want to ban guns altogether, that’s going to piss everybody off,” the Clinton alternate delegate, Mary Bayer, told a Project Veritas reporter.

Instead, Bayer revealed, Democrats use “moderate” language when it comes to guns to obscure their true purpose, a complete elimination of the Second Amendment.

“You have to take that sort of moderate… ‘We just wanna have common sense legislation so our children are safe!’” Bayer told the reporter, adding, “You say shit like that, and then people will buy into it.”

At least she called it what it is – “sh!t” that’s going to p!ss everybody off. Just tell lies and the people will buy it…

For the record, I don’t think Hillary gives a flip about the Second Amendment one way or the other. There’s no bribe …er… nothing in it for her. It’s some of the carnival sideshow nuts in the party that keep pushing gun control (you know, “sh!t like that”).

The DNC knows it is in deep trouble this cycle. Come November the diehards and the gun grabbers are in for a rude awakening – something akin to what the Trump supporters will know in a few years.

Just remember, the Second Amendment was included in the Constitution to protect the people against this exact breed of political low-life.

Hillbilly Justice: Public Corruption in North Georgia

The mountains of North Georgia are some of the most beautiful and peaceful country in America. The air is cleaner and cooler than the state in general. The rolling countryside is covered, end-to-end, in old-growth trees. The people (most of them) are as friendly as can be. The pace is slower. There’s a happiness that descends on the spirit there. There’s also a malignancy. I know all of this first-hand; I used to live in the shadow of those hills.

Remember Boss Hogg (J.D. Hogg) from The Dukes of Hazard? He was the fat guy in the white suit who owned and controlled everything – the bank, the court, the police, the roads, etc. He was a gangster and a crook, although a very lovable one. To a degree, that funny, fictional character was based on some very real but not very funny people.

A local journalist suspected there might have been a little financial hanky-panky in the local Superior Court. Pursuant to state law he and his attorney filed an open records request, looking for canceled checks and other evidence of (minor) misconduct.

His legal requests stirred the anger of Superior Court Judge Brenda Weaver, who obviously felt she had something to hide. Rather than letting the requests play out (admitting a little impropriety, if necessary, and moving on) or administratively (legally) moving to block the requests, she single-handedly instigated a fake criminal investigation. Both the journalist and his attorney were charged with utterly false counts of felony identity theft. The local district attorney and the local police were complicit in this scheme.

Much of Georgia government works that way. For instance, sometimes an insurance company will audit a policy and arbitrarily decide someone owes more premium money – even if the person isn’t a policy-holder. That’s barely even a civil matter. If the person (rightly) refuses to give his money to the insurance crooks, the crooks turn him over to the state Insurance Commission. The Commission has its own police force, who will bring felony fraud charges against the completely unconnected and innocent person as a form of revenge for the real crooks. The insurance industry, and others, pay a lot of money for this malicious extortion privilege. They’re aren’t above the law – they are the law.

So it is with Judge Weaver and her friends. They would be more than happy to use a major crime to cover up a small malfeasance. But for national news coverage of their plot, they might have gotten away with it. Once the story broke on the Drudge Report, the charges were dropped. The FBI is now investigating.

Of course, the FBI is looking for financial irregularities, not into corruption and false prosecution. Being agents of the banksters, they look after money – not after you and me. That’s why Denny Hastert is in prison: not for molesting children, but for technical banking deviance.

Even the end of the trumped-up felony charges in this case smacked of evil oppression. A visiting, senior judge was brought in to dismiss the charges. He held a hearing reminiscent of Soviet-style censorship and threat. I read the comments in the above-linked story about the bizarre hearing. One was written by a friend of mine, the very best adoption attorney in the state of Georgia. She recounted how tyrannical and terrible the hearing judge had been to her clients in the past.

None of this surprises me. I used to live nearby and I know of a few of these Boss Hogg-like characters. Only a few years ago, in the same location, several elected officials were arrested for their parts in a cock-fighting and gambling ring. I think every one of them was re-elected. It makes sense. Even when he was out to get them, the Duke boys frequently stood up for old J.D.

So, what becomes of justice in the hills? I imagine a civil suit and an expensive settlement will come along sooner or later. The FBI is following the money for the money’s sake. If the governor or the attorney general cared, they could take action. They don’t and they won’t. What else is left?

There are two ways to (legally) get rid of a bad Georgia judge. A judge can be impeached by the General Assembly. This is extraordinarily rare. Getting that body to do anything is a difficult task. Asking them (corrupt to the core, mostly) to investigate corruption is like asking the fox to look into a hen-house attack.

The other option is for a formal complaint to be filed with the Georgia Judicial Qualifications Commission (JQC). If the Commission finds cause, they will recommend the Supreme Court order the judge to vacate her office. This is almost as rare as an impeachment.

In this particular case, complaints have already been filed with the JQC. They will slowly investigate. I don’t look for much to come out of it. The Chairman of the JQC is none other than Judge Brenda Weaver. Convenient, huh?

I still encourage people to visit those mountains. From the Reese Apple Farm to Amicalola Falls, it’s a fantastic region. Just mind your P’s and Q’s; don’t upset their apple cart or you may be in for a fall.

The Donald had them cheering last night. I did not watch but I have reviewed the transcript of what he said. I am convinced the man has essentially gotten himself elected but I am not impressed.

To all Americans tonight, in all our cities and towns, I make this promise: We Will Make America Strong Again.

And We Will Make America Great Again.

What about Free again?

I decided to dissect his speech, looking for mention of certain words and ideas. Here’s what I found:

Freedom: one mention (pg 47): in relation to the TPP – “I pledge to never sign any trade agreement that hurts our workers, or that diminishes our freedom and independence.”

Free (as a positive human condition): one (pg 57) – “protect free speech of all Americans.”

Liberty: 0 mentions.

Liberties: 0 mentions.

Independence: one (pg 47) – again in relation to TPP.

Right(s) (as a positive, individual human possession): 2 (pgs 30 and 55) – the right of children to live their lives – right of all Americans to keep their families safe.

Constitution: 1 (pg 55) – concerning only the appointment of Supreme Court justices.

The Founders: 0.

Firearms: 0.

Second Amendment: 1 (pg 55) – Hillary wants to abolish.

Federal Reserve: 0.

Monetary Policy: 0.

Debt: 1 mention (pg 10): Obama has doubled the debt (no promise to eliminate it or even to lower the growth rate).

Elimination of government agencies: 0. (Donald days he will ask Department heads for a list of wasteful programs to eliminate in his first 100 days. The wasteful departments themselves seem safe).

Intervention (foreign meddling): 0. (Trump rightly placed blame on the current Administration for its idiotic policies but elsewhere maintained that America would continue the same albeit with support from our allies and dependents).

Trump’s speech was meant solely to rally his party into a frenzy. It worked. His words centered on safety and wealth, giving only the barest afterthoughts to freedom and, then, only in the context of government policies. He promised tax and regulatory cuts, which are badly needed. However, he said nothing of reducing the overall scope of government nor of ending or curtailing the reliance on the central banking cabal. He doesn’t want to eliminate anything but, rather, replace and retool failed policies with other failed policies. He spoke of fighting terrorism but of its being a product of Hillary’s design – he remarks on terror and criminal invasion smelled of back-peddling, almost to the point of pandering.

This speech gave those who listened what they wanted to hear but was not necessarily what should have been said. Again, the people are getting what they want and what they deserve.

At this late (too late) point, this is the best we can do. I understand many will vote Trump thinking he is better than Hillary. He is different but no better. This speech told me everything I need to know. He’s a big government champion and another politician.

During the next four or eight years we can look forward to more of the same. I really, really hope I’m wrong though I think I am right. This speech didn’t help.

Innocent Until Shot Anyway

The following story kind of torpedoes the sayings: “If you ain’t done nothing wrong, you ain’t got nothing to worry about,” and “Comply with the officer’s commands”.

NORTH MIAMI, FLA. (WSVN) – A therapist who works at a group home for the disabled is still in shock after a North Miami Police officer shot him, but according to the Police Union president, that officer may have been aiming for someone else.

Thursday afternoon, the North Miami Police Department released a statement saying that officer has been placed on administrative leave. They have yet to identify the officer but they described him as a 30-year-old Hispanic male who has been with the department for four years.

Protesters gathered outside the North Miami Police Headquarters with signs and questions about how an unarmed man with his hands up could be shot by police.

Cellphone video was released Wednesday afternoon showing of Charles Kinsey lying on the ground with his hands in the air, telling officers that weapons are not necessary. Police were summoned to the scene by a 911 caller on Monday saying someone was armed and suicidal.

Based on the video, I wonder who the hell the other person they were shooting at was. The mentally challenged man playing with (armed with) the toy truck?

This man was doing his job, a very compassionate job. He wasn’t doing anything wrong. He shouldn’t have had anything to worry about. There was no danger (other than from the cops) at the scene. The man did exactly as instructed and remained calm, trying both to de-escalate the officers and to help his charge. The police said they were trying to save him … so they shot him.

All this happened because some busybody called 911 – a practice that gets a lot of innocent people beaten, body-slammed, tazed, shot, hospitalized and murdered. Calling 911 is talking to the police. One should NEVER do that. In addition to giving the police something to use against the caller (anything you say can and will be used against you…) and it gets people shot, etc.

Luckily, the good Samaritan lived. It appears he will recover and be compensated for his almost being murdered. The special needs man with the toy truck appears to be okay. Very lucky. The specific officer who opened fire should be in prison. The police department should be disbanded.

Democrats are (once again) celebrating Hillary’s inexplicable ability to avoid the jailhouse. Republicans are celebrating Trump for Trump’s sake. It’s so exciting!

They should all take a brief pause to celebrate a mutual achievement, many years in the making. The on-books U.S. federal debt has hit TWENTY TRILLION DOLLARS ($20,000,000,000,000)!!!! Hooray for government!

Actually, it’s a hair under $19.4 Trillion. Or, it was; it has gone up many millions of dollars while I’ve been typing these sentences. But, heck, I’m celebrating early. Here’s where it stood just a minute or two ago:

Yes, your “share” of the debt is almost $60,000. Each one of your children “owes” $60,000 – today – tomorrow (hell, later this morning) it will be more.

The debt, if it must be divvied up, should be allocated among about 600 corrupt men and women – the President, members of Congress, Treasury officials, and Fed Governors. They each “owe” roughly $32.33 Billion. By the way, $19.4T is about 105% of our GDP.

That’s just for the federal debt, as officially and wrongly accounted. The total on-book liabilities including state, corporate, and your own debts comes closer to $66 Trillion (358% of GDP).

These are big numbers. They keep getting bigger.

A more honest accounting figures in the total of all liabilities like Medicare and Social Security shortcomings, which must under law be paid … somehow. The net present value of those liabilities is over $100 Billion (554% GDP). And, that’s what we owe, and need the money on hand to pay off, today. We’re in the hole. Deep.

Then, for honesty’s sake and as a precaution, one should calculate in the U.S. derivatives market. That means all of the side bets made by banks, insurance companies, and different funds – a sort of end around the Fed to create more money than really exists. That number is over $420 Trillion (what’s the point% of GDP). The global derivatives exposure pushes the number well over $1 QUADRILLION (Ha Ha % of GDP)! These extraordinary inclusions are important and necessary because, though they are private and fictitious, in the event of eventual default or collapse, they will be placed on the backs of the people. The banks are too big to fail, remember. Your share of that is something like $3,125,000. Got your checkbook ready, just in case???

Now for some predictions by me.

Presidents tend to serve two terms almost as a rule these days. I’d say there is, right now, a 65% chance Donald John Trump will be the 45th President. At the end of his second term the “official” U.S. debt will probably be somewhere around $40 Trillion. In the off-chance Hillary Rodham Clinton is elected, at the end of her second term the debt will also be about $40 Trillion. Again, that’s the loosely accounted debt. The real figure will be closer to a quarter Quadrillion, the hypothetical deviratives-based debt exposure closer to $2Q.

None of this will ever be paid. These numbers exceed the GDP of the entire world. The higher numbers are likely equal to, or exceed, the value of the entire earth and its contents. The only way to pay off such ridiculous amounts would be to print more money – which would have to be accounted as additional debt. Hilarious.

The politicians and the banksters would be content to let this cycle go on forever if that were possible. It is not. The people, the majority, don’t understand or care. It doesn’t hit home until the lights go out and the grocery store is derelict – ask those in Venezuela.

The only sane solution is to blank the books – entirely. The whole of all the debts should be repudiated and forgotten. This will happen at some point. It has to. We might as well make it an official decision. Thereafter, it might be wise to make debt illegal. How about a war on debt!? Debt issuance, by governments, banks, etc., could (should) be a felony; debt creation via usury and creation of supply inflating, funny money – capital felonies.

If that were now the law, we would need about 600 tall trees and 600 lengths of good rope. I think you’ll admit those are far easier and cheaper to come by than your $60,000 alternatives.

Today, along my travels, I caught bits and pieces of what happened last night at the GOP Convention and Sideshow. Thankfully, I was able to ignore most of it. Something about Michelle Obama’s “the children are our future” speech? Blah.

Tonight I walked by a TV and heard 10 to 12 words from one Paul Ryan. He was saying something about Trump’s new job as President. Ryan needs to focus on keeping his job – looks doubtful right now (which would not be a bad thing for us). I walked back by and Chris Christie was blocking out the whole screen. Old Bridge Tolls was condemning Hillary “Classified Emails” Clinton. Pot, kettle.

I didn’t want to wait for any of the false promises and rah-rah. So I came here to blog-land.

How many times can people be duped? How many times can they cry wolf? Or “conservative”? Not much to conserve now, is there?

I ain’t buying any of it. Come next year and in the years that follow, some of you are in for a rude awakening. Then, sooner or later, you’ll again fall for more lies. I’ll be smoking a cigar, maybe fishing.
