Camacho, cigars

Watch your back. You never know when a good cigar might sneak up on you.

A good while back I was in the cigar shop, pecking away about ISIS or Christmas Ties or something, when someone (Tom, maybe) advised me to “check my six”. I looked back – into the humidor. Then I gave him a puzzled look. He laughingly said something about a cigar. Dense me did not get it. Then.

Now I do.

Behold the Camacho “Check Six” Habana Toro!

What a fantastic smoke!

She’s a Honduran of multi-national origin. The filler is from Honduras, the D.R., and Nica. Nica’s finest binds it up. And it is wrapped in a luxurious brown leaf from Ecuador. A veritable world tour.

The pros say it’s a ‘medium to full” body. I settle firmly on “medium”. But the flavor – lightly peppered and engaging (in a subtle way) – , the smoke, the construction, draw, and everything else is spot-on perfect.

In fact, I think this may be the best Camacho I’ve had since the looong gone Coyolar Titan Corojo. Remember that monster? It’s been a year or ten ago. And the Check Six really couldn’t be more different from the Titan of old. The Big T was a dark Corojo and extra full-bodied.

The Six is as smooth as the Titan was strong. And, darn it was strong. My palate has tempered quite a bit but, back then, it was all I could do to finish one. There was that drive to Athens, the summer of 2006 … Maybe we’ll do that one another time.

Anyway, try a Six the first chance you get. And remember –

cigars, Davidoff, Tampa

Another great work day at Davidoff, the Southern Command Center.

I just picked up the house menu. I’ve seen them before but never thought to thumb through them. Normally, in the mornings, I come in with a cup of coffee. Then I have a bottle of water. At night I’ve been known to have a brown ale (Cigar City Maduro, always).

Then, today, I glanced at this:

IMG_20170110_121543832_HDR.jpg

Jaira’s suggested section……..

Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha…. And this, she says, does not reflect the $45,000 a bottle Macallan 60-year-old. $4,200 per shoot for the poorer rich.

All I see is small car prices.

Yet it’s wonderful to have a such a cool place for luxury. If you’re in town and have money to burn, I suggest you come on in. For now I will have to stick to my $.20 water from the grocery store.

The Big Payback: Smoke and Mirrors

cigars, fitness

LA Fitness (email): “Perrin, we want you back! Sales pitch, blah, blah, blah…”

Perrin: “Funny. I got the distinct impression you did not want me. You want my money. I want a real gym.”

I wasn’t being mean, just honest. I was once a member. Earlier this morning, with the above solicitation in mind (and phone), I went to a Signature Club to investigate a possible renewable and return. At the very least I would like somewhere to workout this week.

This matter is pretty simple, really. They are a gym. I exercise. I was a member. I am not now. I could be again. They say they want me back. I went in to check.

It wasn’t simple for the ladies at the front desk. Either they are simply simple, under the influence, or possibly English deficient. I left and won’t be back as my after-the-visit reply insinuated.

LAF is a good enough facility for what it is: a place of women, children, and homo/metros to do whatever it is that they do instead of training. It also provides another place for tattooed Jersey Shore boys to display their obnoxious uselessness. Homeless cart-pushers seem to enjoy the adjacent sidewalks.

No place for me. No worries. There are at least 100 gyms in this city. I suspect one or two might cater to men and do so in fluent, lucid English. If not, there’s the free course down at the beach.

The foregoing was neither the payback nor the smoke. LAF-able does have mirrors – for the congregants’ hair styling, etc. Anyway, I was just explaining.

The smoke comes from the Big Payback: the 8X80, monster Jaquemate Torpedo by Room 101 which I procured at Davidoff. Back for another day’s typing in cigar paradise!

IMG_20170104_093842588.jpg

Roughly the size of a Louisville Slugger.

For a behemoth, the 101-BPB is rather manageable. The torpedo tapering translates to easy smoking.  The all-Nica construction means earthy, spicy happiness. It burns well and draws easy. It’s a shade beyond “medium”. And the FLA price is reasonable. As a bonus it should get me through this post and several other articles, maybe even part of a project.

And, of course, neither Room 101 nor Davidoff had to tell me they wanted me back. That goes without saying. Maybe fitness clubs should emulate the cigar industry. The front desk wouldn’t understand that. Or much else.

God morning!

cigars, Davidoff, Tampa

Well, fate has me back at the Southern Command Center, aka Davidoff’s flagship Tampa store. Of all the Florida amusement parks and attractions, this has to be one of the very best.

The order of the day has been: catching up on work, getting over the holidays, and burning through a Davidoff Nicaragua.

The work was made so much better by the detailed attention of Jaira (“Jarah”). When you stop in, and you really must, I highly recommend her. You could ask for Ed or one of the other less attractive options. But why? Just kidding. They’re all great.

img_20170103_130039482

(Jaira…. Seriously, the staff is half knowledgeable, well-manner men and half knowledgeable knockouts. Choose wisely as I did.)

Davidoff is a fantastic choice in a cigar city of fantastic choices. They carry just about brand of better smoke in an unbelievable atmosphere.

IMG_20170103_132209580_HDR.jpg

They open early and close late. The mornings and afternoon are an ideal time (and place) to telecommute or relax. At night the “in”crowd arrives for loads of fun. Choose any one of 10,000 cigars and any drink from water to 80-year old Cuban rum.

*Note: This year has admittedly kicked off a little slow. Things are ramping up for a great January and an over-the-top 2017. Stick around…

cigars, cold and flu, sick

I do not get sick. I beat the crap out of myself in the gym on a regular basis but I never, ever succumb to illness of the bug variety. Never. Ever. Seriously, I have had nothing more than a headache or a sniffle for over 5 years. Until now.

Now I am sick. Given my insane immunity to just about everything, this must be something exotic, something dangerous. Call the CDC.

It started as a running nose with associated cough. Then it rapidly progressed … er … lower. Still, eh, runny…. Anyway, the dread disease is passing. I expect to be right by morning.

Ah, yes! All this brings me to the cigar review. As a cure-all I’m drinking some black coffee and smoking a San Doro Colorado by Villiger. It is very good.

Now, leave me the hell alone. I’m sick.

cigars, La Gloria Cubana, Nicaragua, Top Shelf Cigar Shoppe

Oh my. We have a winner here. Thank you to Gerald and Russell at the Top Shelf Cigar Shop for securing me my very own edition of this incredible stick.

My Puro is a Gordo-ish 6X64 beauty. It appears to be 100% Nicaraguan – filler, binder, and wrapper (Jalapa Sol). I think that wrapper is counted as natural. However it is a rich, deep brown and slightly oily. Have a look:

IMG_20161211_170748679.jpg

She’s full-bodied but not at all overbearing. I at once got the earthy Nica-ness I love along with terrific hints of spice.

It’s a big stick and very tightly packed. In fact I thought I was going to have draw problems based on the density. None. At. All.

For such a large chunk of tobacco, it burns perfectly even and the draw is effortless. I was more than impressed. It’s my kind of big cigar – tons of rich, flavorful smoke with no work required (excluding this write-up).

The smoke is much like the woman pictured on the band: elegant but you probably wouldn’t want to underestimate her. This is a near perfect blend of the glory of Cuba and the sophisticated power of Esteli.

Bravo!

Atlanta, cigars, corruption, Courts, due process, equal protection, Federalist Society, First Amendment, freedom, law, politics, Second Amendment

Still less than a week out from the general election I’m seeing a lot of ideological banter on social media. There’s a lot of comparing and contrasting. Much is in the form of memes though some is serious. For example, a left-leaning friend (a real, old friend) posted the following on Facebook:

“I wish Republicans had the same unwavering, unconditional support for the First Amendment that they do for the Second.”

I “liked” the post. I like the sentiment. I will not get into partisan politics as both sides and parties have a lot of catching up to do with liberty on those two and many other fronts. My wish is that everyone would get behind all of the freedoms set forth in the Bill of Rights, 100% and all the time. That would be half of making the Constitution worthwhile (again?). (The other half would be narrowly restricting the government to just those parameters delineated). Already I lose people, I know.

My buddy isn’t likely to get his wish anytime soon. I will likely never see mine come to fruition. I can handle it, being that I am after all a rebel to all ideology. But there is always hope. I am a staunch supporter of the First and Second Amendments (and all else recognizing rights of the free people). I don’t have a story to go with the proposition of the First and the Second together though. I do, however, have one directly related to the Second Amendment and application of Due Process and Equal Protection.

Journey back with me now …

The year was 2008. It was May, I think. Let’s say May of 2008. Yes. The Atlanta Chapter of the Federalist Society announced a lunch and learn seminar centered on the landmark 2A case, District of Columbia v. Heller, 554 U.S. 570 (2008)(the Supreme Court held the 2A protected individual rights to bear arms).

The case was, then, before the High Court, having just come out of the D.C. Circuit Court of Appeals. The case, there, was known as Heller v. D.C. Litigants “hop the ‘V'” when they change courts to keep things interesting. The D.C. Circuit came to the same conclusion as the Supreme Court did later though, in my opinion, better, stronger, and less “qualified”. Judge Lawrence Silberman wrote the majority opinion.

Where was I? The Fed-Soc! This was the final Society function I attended (at least so far). And I only went because of the subject matter and the keynote speaker. Said speaker was none other than Judge Silberman.

I always hated legal seminars, even the ones about guns. I think Silberman said many nice and smart things. He’s a nice and smart man. The problem is that in those settings a haze descends over me. It’s all I can do to eat the lunch (not cheap in that case).

After the lunch there was a mix and mingle session. I remember looking out the windows. We were in the conference/gala room of some major law firm, on about the 50th floor of a mid-town high-rise. The view that day for terrific.

At some point I found myself in a small group with Silberman, a U.S. Attorney, some political hacks and a few bigwig attorneys. I thanked and praised the Judge for his work. There was a lot of nodding, smiles and those quips that only come from anti-government type conservatives who happen to make their living from the government. Then, as always happens, the Perrin came out. I said something like:

“I love my guns and I don’t support any gun controls at all, reasonable or not. But, whatcha gonna do? It’s the District of Corruption.”

Only Silberman (now a little nervous) broke the gawking silence, “Did you just say the District of Corruption?” I answered, “Yes. I did.”

I didn’t like even Antonin Scalia’s qualifications on the Second Amendment. And I wasn’t going to give any of my own about my statement. I excused myself so they could talk about me. I had other business downtown anyway.

About a mile south and a world away I had an appointment with the Southern Center For Human Rights. Whereas the Fed-Soc is arch-conservative and all that, the Southern Center is arch-liberal and all that. The scenery changes, I don’t. I was on a mission that day to fight for multiple rights. The venues were unimportant.

My business with the Center was this: various backwards Georgia counties allow(ed) for private probation companies to operate cases in State Courts. A very few did a good and reasonable job. The majority were as corrupt as the District. What one would expect from Georgia.

I had a lot of experience with two of those probation systems – one good, one bad. And I knew that the Center was investigating the bad one under cover. We had spoken on the phone but I wanted an in person meeting. It had nothing to do with the attractiveness of the young woman leading the investigation though that certainly did not hurt. (And I can’t remember her name…).

Our concerns were mutual. In addition to posing several Constitutional questions on the operation of government, these systems discriminated horribly against poor people. If you or I got a speeding ticket (well, if you did), you just paid the fine and went on your merry way. Poor folks facing the same predicament also faced a world of hurt. You might have paid $200 and moved on. They ended up paying $1,000+ over the course of one or more years. The abuses were too numerous to list. It was bad, bad enough to make me ride MARTA to fight it.

We talked for a good hour. No crazy Perrinisms, I just told her everything I knew and offered my help. She, they had a vague plan. Over the next few years, with a ton of help from private defense attorneys and many lawsuits and some legislation, the plan worked out. Kind of. Georgia still has a backwards system, greatly resembling the previous one, but it is now conducted under official guise. Progress, I suppose.

A little liberal progress. On the conservative front it was much the same. The Supreme Court gave us Heller and MacDonald and other courts gave yet more 2A friendliness. There’s still much to be done on all fronts. And I gave you this story, heartening testimony that one may support opposite ends of the freedom spectrum even in the same day in May in Hotlanta.

Now, I give you the following zany side stories! The price you pay for reading this far.

I spent the night (before or after I cannot remember – maybe both) at a hotel in Buckhead. Not wanting to drive downtown I took a MARTA train. I bought my token with a $20. The stupid machine spit out my token and 17 or 18 Sacagawea Dollars as change. Thus, as I eased around traffic, I clanged about with 4 pounds of scrap-metal in my pockets.

Upon leaving the Southern Center I encountered a beggar. Downtown Atlanta almost has as many beggars as D.C. has rats. I had walked past more than a few that day alone. This lady was different. She was well dressed. She seemed sweet and professional. And she seemed like she really needed a helping hand. She only asked me if I could help her with anything. No song and dance. No ridiculous story. No fake Rolex. I said, “Darling, you’re in luck!”

She was more than gracious to receive Sacagawea and the whole tribe. I was happy being able to walk upright again.

One good deed deserved another so I treated myself to a cigar. (You had to know cigars were coming). It was at the nice shop on Sidney Marcus that I don’t think is in business anymore. It was just down the street from my hotel.

large-winston_churchill_lmtd_ed_2016_box

Corona Cigars. I’m a Corona Club VIP! How ’bout you?

At the time I was reviewing Cigars for the now-defunct Vegas Room. As an assignment I bought a Davidoff Winston Churchill. Later that evening I removed with my smoke and a beer to the hotel pool area. Immediately upon lighting up my chair broke. This, aggravating my Sacagawea injury, killed the experience and ended my review attempt. I took my beer back to the room with a curse and a limp.

The moral to all of this is: reach across the aisle sometime and help the “other side”. Freedom is freedom is freedom. Also, if you can help a poor person, do so – it might benefit you immediately. And, finally, when you go to do your review smoking, pick a good chair…

The JFR Lunatic El Chiquito

cigars, JFR, Tampa Humidor

Here’s a little break from dissecting electoral college counts tonight.

I’ve covered the JFR Lunatic, the 8 x 80 monster allegedly named for me. Yesterday, coping with the end of my vacation and trying to get a little work in, I tried this:

img_20161101_095256560_hdr

A smaller, more user-friendly Lunatic: the El Chiquito. That’s Spanish for “tiny” or “little one”. I suppose by comparison to the original it is. This little beauty is a mere 4 3/4 x 70. Short and stout, a little Nicaraguan teapot. She’s crafted in Esteli. The finest valley filler and binder leaves Nica has to offer get covered by an attractive San Andrés wrapper. The Mexican lineage, I think, accounts for the color – not quite a straight maduro nor corojo.

img_20161101_095531096

She’s a little beauty whatever the hue. And the taste was fantastic. I found all of my favorite Nica joys along with a hint of a neatly subdued woody, spicy finish. Lovely. It was perfect for brunch, the body being less hefty than one might assume. Mine was pared with an Amber Ale the name of which I can’t recall.

It was a great experience. Many thanks to Brittney and Mike at The Tampa Humidor. Britt, that was the cleanest, best arranged Xikar display case I’ve ever seen.

So, next time you need a “little” break from the ordinary, remember the El Chiquito.
