Summertime is almost here … officially. It’s felt like summer in the South for a good month now. Welcome, rest of the country; glad you could join us. The thermometer has been flirting with 100 lately but tonight there is a strange yet welcome cool breeze blowing. I’m out back listening to the crickets and other vocal bugs. The bats are out, wheeling around in search of dinner. Lightning bugs. A few stars.

The news has been a little heavy lately. Allow me to suggest a few fun ways to enjoy summer and temporarily forget about the ills of the world. A little list:

  1. Sit outside. Day or night. I’m out right now; it’s nice. By the way, a cigar is a natural mosquito repellent – fear no Zika.
  2. Exercise. Summer is a great time to shape up or maintain. Just remember the water.
  3. Take a road trip. I’m on the road a lot this season. Please just remember to drive attentively, with courtesy for the other guy.
  4. The beach. Sand castles. Swimming. Sun burns. A family favorite. My daughter is there right now … lucky. Okay, I was just there too.
  5. The mountains. My favorite place any season. It’s always a little cooler and slower at higher elevations. Take a hike!
  6. Visit a small, local amusement park – like Tweetsie.
  7. Go fishing. Have fun. Relax. Bring home something to fry up. That, or bring back lies…
  8. Take the family to the gun range. Send a picture to your Congressman. Remember the four cardinal rules of safety, please.
  9. Turn off the television. Leave it off. It’s poison.
  10. Read a book. I’m working on a few for this summer. They will be great reads, beach or hills. One will even be a comical work of psuedo-fiction. Buy multiple copies…
  11. Write a book. Or a blog. A letter. Anything. Tell us what you think.
  12. Take a little break – from everything. It’s the “lazy days” – it’s okay.

Better Late Than Never: Small Spring Garden

I am officially back in the gardening business. My “crop” is nothing like my plots from the olden days but it made me VERY happy to plant it yesterday afternoon. Yes, I cheated and bought prepackaged plants … I have to make up for missed weather and all.

I already have a few little green tomatoes on the vine. Peppers were always my specialty; I expect to start eating some in a month and they should produce into October.

If you have a little space with sufficient sunlight, three free minutes a day, and $20, I highly recommend a little garden. It is fun. It is easy. It gives you something to look forward too and something to cook up later. It beats television any day.

Awesome Autumn Activities

Happy first day of fall!

From today until the end of December is my favorite time of year.  I’ve heard more than a few of you agree from time to time.  Here is a short list of things that makes the fall incredible:

  1. Cooler weather.  Down South it’s nice not to sweat as much.
  2. Scenery.  How great is it to take a drive or a hike and look at the colorful fall foliage?
  3. Football.  In person, on TV or on the radio.
  4. Fall brews.  Oktoberfests.  Pumpkin this.  Spice that.  Christmas ales around the corner.
  5. Fall cigars.  Beyond a few (Oktoberfest by Quesada) maybe there aren’t too many fall specific sticks.  But, try combining No. 5 here with No. 4 and No. 8 one evening – you’re welcome.
  6. Hunting.  I don’t get out as often as I used to or much as I should but I never regret waiting in a blind or walking in the woods.  Fall can also be a great fishing season (stripers anyone?).  The proceeds of this entry go well with No. 4.
  7. Sleeping with the windows open.  See also: driving windows down.  Give the AC a rest.
  8. Sitting by a fire.  Outside.  With a beer.  In that cool weather.  Ahhh…
  9. Holidays.  Brings out the kid in all … most … of us.
  10. Raking leaves.  Maybe not as much as the others…

I’m sure you can think of many more to add.

I survived another Masters Tournament!  And what an affair it was – one of the best in great period of bests!  Tiger didn’t win but he did greatly improve over his recent forays. None of my favorites made it either.  Hats off to Jordan Spieth.  What a showing!

Seriously, who knew Daly can sing?  He sang Knockin’ on Heaven’s Door by Bob Dylan. And, he was good.  That’s Big John in the above picture on the left.  I have a video of the whole song.  Shinebox is disappointed as you must be that I lack the technological know how to post it.  It’s coming along with blog-related videos.  Remember, I have the tech skills of a possum.

As a happy aside – we just celebrated tax day!  Another best of best days but some are perplexed: “As they rush to file their taxes by April 15, Americans are rightfully frustrated with the complexity of the 74,608-page-long federal tax code.”  The Not-So-Affordable Care Act (just another tax) added a measly three thousand pages…  What’s there to complain about?

Today I published An Unexpected Gift: Christmas at the Supreme Court, a celebration of the Court’s ruling in Rodriguez vs. United States, April 21, 2015.  Give it a read.  I’m working on a few more heavy hitters, one of which might make it out today.  Stay tuned.

Yesterday I predicted Tiger Woods would fail to make the cut at this year’s Masters. Today I’m not so sure.  For years Tiger has been the most serious-minded man on the course – any course.  No smiling, little communication, no emotion until some injury, missed shot, or drama kicks in and sidelines him.  Something has changed.

I have reports from the practice rounds – made clear by the Par Three tournament footage – that Tiger is having fun. He’s loosened up.  He’s talking with fans.  He’s smiling.  He’s frolicking. “Tiger Woods was frolicking with his children as he showed up for the Par-3 Contest for the first time in 11 years.” If he keeps it up we may see him through the weekend.

A Funny Thing Happened On The Way To The Election

In 2004 I did a stupid thing.  Despite my libertarian leanings I once involved myself with the local Republican party.  I did this partly as a networking opportunity and partly as an attempt to side with the famous “lesser of two evils,” a political compromise if you will.  As a result I wasted a lot of time at various party events, listening to irrational people ranting about hateful or pointless things.  I learned a valuable lesson though and I have never placed myself in such a demeaning situation again.

Something funny (or alarming) did happen.  I’ll relate to you now.  I actually got a little bit of wisdom out of the whole experience.  Maybe you will too.  Mainly I learned the Party was useless and certain of its members and supporters were untrustworthy at best.  This story relates to one of the chief events which taught me the lesson.  Enjoy!

It was George Bush, the Dimmer’s, second Presidential campaign.  I was invited to travel down to Marietta, Georgia to attend a luncheon seminar on the subject and what the “grassroots” folks could expect.  The featured speaker was Ralph Reed of former “Christian” Coalition and political snake-oil fame.  The event was held in a trendy hi-rise and the crowd was composed of typical Republican types – older white folks in suits and such.

Ralph went on and on about how Bush could and should win, if only us little people would do our part.  I was more interested in the menu than the rhetoric for most of the meeting.  Then I caught something Ralph said which made me laugh openly.  I nearly choked on my scone.  He was commenting on how hard it would be to win the re-election, or any new election for that matter, thanks to the Draconian and likely illegal provisions of the dreaded McCain-Feingold campaign finance law, recently enacted.  He went on for a few minutes about the horrors of doing business under the new law and then opened up for questions.

You probably can guess what happened next.  I couldn’t resist.  I raised my hand early and when called on I asked, “Do you mean the same McCain-Feingold law authored by Republican John McCain?  Ralph, reading my thoughts, nodded affirmatively but uncomfortably.  I kept on, “You mean the same law passed by the Republican majority in both houses of Congress?  Ralph began to sweat.  At this point, several of the well-fed attendees looked up from their dessert dishes.  I pressed on, “You’re talking about the law signed by President Bush, the same guy with the current troubles?  Ralph was white and shaky.  He had a hard time answering me.  A few more of the Rush-bots began to listen.

I further inquired, “This is the law which Bush said was probably UnConstitutional, but that he’d sign anyway?”  Ralphie swooned.  I should have stopped but I just could not help myself.  Most of the herd was still grazing thoughtlessly, but I had a large enough audience for my point.  “Didn’t Bush sign the law only to say the Supreme Court would work out the details?” I asked.  At this point Mr. Reed determined to leave early and stopped my questioning with a vague, “Uh, yeah…that law.”  He didn’t want the suits to catch on if they could.  There were no more questions.

As if by chance, or design, I happened to take the same descending elevator as Mr. Reed.  I pressed a little further.  I didn’t want to harass the poor guy but the fun was too good to let slip past.  I asked rhetorically, “I guess it’s up to the Supreme Court, now?”  Ralph began to turn green but responded, “Yeah.  We’ll have to see what they say.”  I ended the verbal water-boarding, “And, we can always count on them, can’t we?”  I wish there was a video to corroborate my story.

The first time I was alone afterwards I laughed loudly for minutes on end.  The ride home was unremarkable though.  I don’t think the person I accompanied ever caught on to what I was implying.  To her, whatever this new law was, it was just another part of the process – our team versus theirs.  What it really meant was that the home team consisted of a bunch of F—ing Morons!  I’ve never seen Ralph since and he won’t accept my Facebook friendship request.  Bad memories I suppose.

The law turned out to mean nothing to the ticks and has since been largely over-ridden.  The Supremes did make their ruling – a classic in my opinion.  They pointed out the oppressive, free-speech limiting nature of the law, but concluded that since it pertained to the two political branches, and since those branches had approved it, the Court would too out of deference.  So they did!  As I said the law has been rendered moot for the most part.  Politicians don’t mind stamping out the little people’s rights and opportunities, but they sure as hell won’t have any law impinging on their schemes.

In the end, I guess nothing was gained or lost, except any respect I had for Republicans not named Ron Paul.

How I Lost Over 40 Pounds, Etc., Part II.

This is the second installment (third really) on my recent weight loss and permanent health kick.  I encourage all of you to get physical and fit.  It makes a world of difference in one’s daily life, everything seems easier and a little more fun!

I keep singing the praises of Evans Fitness Center (EFC), http://www.evansfitnessclub.com/, here in my local area.  I spoke with their management today about the blog, my comments, and the possibility of my appearance in one of those “before and after” photo testimonial things.  The girls especially seem interested in the latter part.

If you don’t live in metro-Augusta, Georgia, then I hope you have a good facility nearby.  I have seem clubs as impressive as EFC but they are RARE.  Any club could do in theory, though I have found that an excellent, first class environment lends itself to keeping one motivated and inspired.

I joined EFC in December when they first opened.  They even have a 30-day free trial!  At the time I had already lost maybe 20 pounds due to my change in dietary habits.  As I have written before, I was nervous about going to any gym.  In the past I have usually hurt myself while trying to do too much too fast or have just lost interest.  A lot of clubs are not interesting.  Neither was the case at EFC. 

First, I just can’t say enough about the quality of this place.  They have a filter thing that refills your water bottle, free towels, and so many other perks I can’t list them all.  Everything was done right.  Second, I really wanted to get back into shape, and so, I used my brain for a change and worked my way into the program.  By the way, this here is not a “program” like those on TV.  If it were, you’d see me on the idiot box hawking it to some hip-hop beat surrounded by hot babes.  Hmmmmmmm???????

Anyway, for me the right way was slow and cautious, especially with weights.  If you want a great guide to exercising with weights, pick up a copy of Arnold’s Encyclopedia of Bodybuilding, http://www.amazon.com/The-New-Encyclopedia-Modern-Bodybuilding/dp/0684857219.  The name may sound intimidating was may seem some of the pictures and described routines.  I used the old model in my glory days.  It works.  However, you need not be a hardcore Mr./Mrs. Olympia candidate to benefit from the guide.  Consider it an education.  Arnold covers literally everything about conditioning every muscle of the body in tremendous detail.  Use what you need, no more.  If you’ve never worked out before or it has been a while, a personal trainer can help you.  Find one that suits your needs and disposition.

I’ll simply, here, divide weight training into three categories: free weights (to include plate-weighted machines); weight stack machines; and cable/pulley weights.  These last two are my description names.

I started with the stack machines and light free weights.  I now incorporate all three into my routine based on what I’m trying to do.  EFC, like many good gyms, has multiple areas for all of these types.

Regardless of what I use I try to adhere to some simple procedures.  First, I break my days up my the muscles I hit.  Generally it works like this: Day 1, arms and shoulders; Day 2, back and chest; Day 3, legs.  I do abdominal exercises everyday (or try to).  Along with abs I work all “core” muscles, those around the middle of the torso.  Many people make the mistake of building a strong stomach while neglecting their lower back and sides.  This leads to imbalance and possible painful problems.  Work them all together and equally.

My gut was the most embarrassing visual part of the old me.  Personally, the worst thing was the lack of energy for daily tasks.  It was the gut that everyone saw.  I must admit I  worked my way up to size 44 pants, and they were getting tight!  I just bought some 38s and they are already loose.  I went from the last notch on my belt to the other last notch, then I had to drill a new (good) last notch, then another.  I am cheap, poor, and I have good belts to begin with.  I will buy new ones when these fall apart.

Once a week or so I work on my neck.  The neck usually gets flexed while doing shoulder and other exercises.  I concentrate on it specifically for an extra boost.  I have … excuse me, had, neck problems.  Building up the muscles that support the head and stretching them have eliminated most of my problems.  A word of warning!  The neck is sensitive and extra care should be used when working it, I go EXTRA light and easy with my neck.  Be careful, you spine is kind of important!

The second simple procedure I follow is the amount of effort I give each particular movement or exercise.  Let’s say I’m doing bicep curls (for the big guns!).  I try to do three separate sets of ten repetitions of this exercise.  With lighter weights I will go for 15 to 20 reps – this builds definition.  If I’m trying to “shock” the biceps I will pyramid my way up in weights and may sacrifice the total number of reps on the heavier sets. 

I also do multiple types of work for each muscle or muscle group.  In Muscle and Fitness Magazine, I read, a long time ago, some great advice: “Everything works, but nothing works for long.”  You have to vary it up to keep the progress and fun going.  This also depends on what you are trying to accomplish.  Serious weight-lifters go through cycles of heavy weight, light weight, no weight, etc. to reach their goals.  My goal is a lean, muscular look, like Christian Bale’s Batman/Bruce Wayne.  You have a different goal, you’ll figure it out in time.

By the way, I stretch constantly to keep the muscles I working loose.  After I pump iron I go upstairs and do some form of “cardio” work.  This is what most people associate with burning fat, and it does.  It also plays with your heart-rate and workload, hence the name “cardio.”  Again, you need to figure out, maybe with expert help, what you’re trying to do.  Jacking your heart rate through the roof might strengthen your heart (or kill you) but it might not be the best way to burn fat.  My approach is easy.  I use either the elliptical machine, treadmill, or stationary bike (usually the elliptical) for my needs.  I go for 10 to 30 minutes depending on how I feel and how much time I have.  These modern machines track everything: calories burned, time, heart-rate, etc.  I’m more concerned with calories but I closely monitor the other factors.  It all depends.  Trial and error folks.

The last thing I do before I leave the gym floor is stretch.  This when I get to do my favorite exercise of all – hanging upside-down on the inversion table.  I try to do it for 3 to 5 minutes or longer.  I stretches out everything and decompresses the spine and joints – literally reversing gravity.  Sleeping at night decompresses the joints – this goes beyond.  I can’t say enough about this so I will leave much to your imagination.

Depending on how much time I have I end the workout with a trip to the steam room or the sauna or both.  Both do the same thing – they make you sweat.  Steam, while having a lower temperature, works faster – instantly, in fact.  The sauna is hotter but, as a dry heat, it takes a short while to start working.  The benefits to both are numerous.  They are very relaxing (once you get used to the oven-like experience).  They work wonders on sore muscles and joints.  And, they help you shed excess water.  Sweating eliminates toxins and gunk from the body.  Just remember to keep drinking water to put back what you need.  Again, water is supremely important both to life and weight loss.  Water is your friend.

Well friends, that’s what I do.  This is a great over-simplification.  Again, you will just have to jump in and see what works for you.  Seek professional guidance as needed.  My main point here is to inspire and share what can be accomplished.  Go get em, tigers!
