This very afternoon, following an absence of several years, I set foot back in the ring. My opponent was about the toughest hombre I’ve ever faced – a 100-pound Everlast bag. I intended to do this thing, even taking my gloves with me to the gym. Once there, being semi-senile, I left them in the car. No matter, we had business, so bare-knuckles it was. Here’s an honest recap of the bout:

Conditions: a little warm and dark (light through an open door only)

Time: roughly one round. (It’s been a while)

Technique: All orthodox, Western; jabs, crosses, hooks; no hammers, elbows, palms, kicks, etc. I did try to switch up non-dominance a little. Footwork needs work.

Power: I still have it, which is interesting considering how light the bag was and how weak I feel.

Speed: Fast enough. Very surprising. Given the short time, maybe it wasn’t.

Accuracy: Okay… I managed to land all the punches on the rubberized canvas. That’s about it. Jabs were best, but anytime the bag spins, there’s a problem. I had about two and a half minutes of problems. (I blame the pandemic).

Stamina: Ha! LOL. I’m still out of breath.

Injuries: None visible, but I will feel this tomorrow.

Grade: D+ (“D” stands for “done,” plus I still had the power).

Post-wrap: In the event of real-world encounters, I’m glad there are such things as blades, bullets, and just not being there. However, I was glad to be back and I may do it again … assuming I can walk… I advise the young against getting old and/or laying off.

As I noted in my 8th Anniversary post, for some unknown reason – like we’re in the middle of a national emergency or something – the traffic, here, has been down a bit. But, I just also noticed that there was a slight increase from April to May and then from May to June. That bucks the trend of several years even if the total numbers are still down. Thanks, I suppose.

And, I’ve been back in the (new) gym for the first time in a while. All of those numbers are responding appropriately.

Carry on. P

In Dr. King’s day, Americans were more active and less round. A ranking of the most and least sedentary states.

Alabama, Arkansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, Oklahoma, and Tennessee are the worst, but they are not alone. By the map, there’s not a whole lot of separation between any of the regions. Only four states and DC (where the denizens scurry about like rats?) rate below 20% inactivity.

Go march or something.

This study isn’t at all surprising, as one health begets another.

A great deal of focus these days is placed on the possible harm many athletes may be doing to their brains due to the hard hitting nature of contact sports like football or hockey. While the serious and debilitating nature of CTE-related and concussion injuries are indisputable at this point, an interesting new study conducted at Northwestern University is playing devil’s advocate in the debate surrounding sports and brain health.

Researchers say that as long as an athlete avoids head injuries, their brain is likely healthier than a non-athlete’s. This was found to be the case across a variety of sports, including contact sports like football, soccer, and hockey.

“No one would argue against the fact that sports lead to better physically fitness, but we don’t always think of brain fitness and sports,” says senior author Nina Kraus, the Hugh Knowles Professor of Communication Sciences and Neurobiology and director of Northwestern’s Auditory Neuroscience Laboratory, in a release. “We’re saying that playing sports can tune the brain to better understand one’s sensory environment.”

After analyzing close to 1,000 participants, including roughly 500 (both male and female) college Division I athletes, the study found that athletes develop an enhanced ability to quiet electrical noise in their minds. This makes it easier for athletes to quickly and efficiently process external sounds on hectic playing fields, such as their coach yelling instructions from the bench.

Hit the gym. Pass the ball. Read a book. EZ.

84% of women soldiers failed the new Army ACFT.

According to the numbers, a jaw-dropping 36% of soldiers overall failed the test, with 64% passing. When you break it down by gender, 70% of men passed. But here is a number should kill and bury the ACFT evermore: 84% of women failed the test. Those numbers are so absurdly biased against women that I was afraid this was some sort of elaborate joke by Duffelblog. But I spoke with one soldier in a leadership position at an ACFT test battalion, and the soldier confirmed that the leaked numbers lined up almost exactly with those of the soldier’s battalion.

Here is why those fail numbers are so bad, male or female: you fail your physical training test, you get flagged. You aren’t going to military schools like Basic Leader Course or Airborne School. And if somehow you get there anyway, when you’re tested again you’ll be turned around and sent home. You cannot be promoted. You cannot be reclassified into another MOS. In the Guard and reserve, you cannot be transferred. You lose your tuition assistance. You can’t even reenlist!

Here is where it gets really ugly. If 84% of women are failing this test—keep in mind, 84% of women who are in battalions specifically preparing for the ACFT—you have essentially eliminated women from the United States Army. It gets uglier yet. When a woman gives birth, she gets a six-month profile excusing her from the ACFT. The thing is: the real killer for women is the “leg tuck” portion of the ACFT, in which you assume a pull-up position and bring your hips and knees up to your elbows and back down as many times as possible in two minutes. That’s asking an awful lot for a woman who has given birth in the last few months; and allows, basically, for no time to actually train up for the event once her profile expires. Already, women are failing the leg tuck test by 72%.

It is no secret that sexism is a problem in the military. What this test makes clear is that said sexism knows no bounds, and with the capricious stroke of a pen, those men have found a way to wash an entire gender from the ranks. If 84% of women are failing the test, the problem is not with women soldiers; it’s the test.

Of course, it’s the sexism and the maternity leave – not biology or anything. This may actually benefit the US in the upcoming conflict. If the Russians and/or Chinese can’t stop laughing, then they can’t fight. Brilliant!

Body and mind:

It’s no secret that exercise can be beneficial from a psychological perspective. A session at the gym or jog around the neighborhood can help us clear our mind, reset our thoughts, and improve our mood. Now, a team of German scientists have discovered that keeping oneself physically fit is also associated with better brain structure and functioning in young adults.

The research team believe their findings indicate that if a person can improve their physical fitness, it may lead to improved cognitive ability, including elevated memory retention and superior problem solving.

This correlation suggests the opposite is also true. Hence, Westerners have grown fatter and dumber in conjunction. Both ways, it’s not just for the young. Join the slim, smart team.

Where’s Rita Coolidge? We need a serenade here.

As the US average IQ drops dangerously towards Central American levels, we can at least take comfort (foods) in the fact that the now much duller Amerikans are the largest set ever.

The nation’s obesity rate has reached the highest-ever level this year, according to the United Health Foundation’s 2018 . Obesity is a leading contributor to cardiovascular disease, cancer and other conditions. Additionally, an increase in drug deaths, suicides and cardiovascular disease deaths is contributing to an increase in premature death.

Better ban guns and cigars…

The obesity rate exceeded 30 percent of the adult population for the first time in America’s Health Rankings history, up 5 percent in the past year (from 29.9 percent to 31.3 percent). Premature deaths increased 3 percent (from 7,214 to 7,432 years lost before age 75 per 100,000 people).

Livin’ large. Adding in the merely overweight civies, we’re at something like 75% of all persons within the nonborders of the former nation. The trend GROWS (pun). Soon, maybe within a decade or so, the percent of tubbies will equal the average IQ.

USA! USA! USA!

Go supersize something.

PS: Please read all about that amazing money-waster of a program they’re pushing! Sure to be as effective as that last election Y’all enjoyed.

A CDC Study shows that only 23% of Americans exercise on a regular basis.

About a quarter of US adults meet guidelines for both aerobic and muscle-strengthening exercise in their spare time, according to new data from the CDC’s National Center for Health Statistics.

The US Department of Health and Human Services recommends that people between the ages of 18 and 64 engage in at least 150 minutes of moderate physical activity or 75 minutes of vigorous physical activity each week, as well as muscle-strengthening activities at least twice a week.

Subtracting 23% from the whole (apologies to Detroit Public “School” grads) leaves 77% not exercising. Oddly, this remainder is roughly the same as that percentage of Americans who are either overweight and/or obese and/or severely obese.

Friends, this ain’t gonna cut it. Not unless you’re in the mortuary business should this news be seen as anything but evidence of decadence and decline.

Some suggestions for those majority heavies wishing to shed flab and tone it up a notch (or ten):

Eating right and exercise are obvious – and easier than many would imagine. Perrin agrees with a government agency here!!! Just walk 2 1/2 hours per week – 30 minutes or 2 miles, Monday through Friday will do. That and cut the sugar and carbs. Got 30 minutes? I’ll bet you do. Find the time by:

Turning off the G-D television!

Consider NOT checking the Tweets, texts, and cat videos for half an hour. You’ll live.

Allowing your fantasy sports team half an hour to play on their own. They do that anyway.

Postpone that next cool and I’m-sure-yours-is-so-meaningful tattoo. Especially if it’s a facial tat…

While you walk, think about what you’ve read here, today, or over at TPC – new column coming ASAP.

Alternatively, consider doing your family a favor and make those final arrangements yourself as you see fit. Otherwise, you’ll burden them with decisions like whether to go all wood or steel or to simply dump your fat ass in the closet ditch.

Ode to Deadlifting

deadlift, exercise, fitness

Okay, Christmas is over and business is business. I’m back in the gym this week (though I suffered no holiday-associated poundage increase). It’s going great.

I suspect that a few of you may also be working out, trotting around, resolved and such to get back into shape. Good. Here’s a secret:

For building muscle, burning fat, raising the pulse, etc., there really is no better exercise than my old nemesis friend, the deadlift.

I restart my program tomorrow, the third “restart” in the past 18 months. Restarts are okay; it means moving forward.

Here’s a good article by David Robson, Bodybuilding.com, on the mighty lift:

Deadlifts: The King Of Mass-Builders?

Probably. Read it.

A lovely demonstration:

deadlifts-the-king-of-mass-builders-5-700xh

Nice … form. Bodybuilding.com.

For me, the DL only causes mild aggravation to the following: temples, jaw, neck, shoulders, upper back, forearms, wrists, lower back, hips, behind, thighs, knees, shins, calves, ankles, feet, toes, ego, and attitude… Then again, it only boosts those areas in exceeding measure too.

So, have at it. Leave the treadmill for the treadmillers and pay a visit to Ironland.

The Ode:

Deadlift, deadlift,

Aching knees and back,

Once, twice, three times a…

Hell, just go to the gym already.

It’s a growing problem: the rounding of America. 57%+ of our children are on track to be obese by age 35:

More than 57 percent of children in the United States will be obese by age 35 if current trends in weight gain and poor eating habits continue, researchers warned Wednesday.

The risk of obesity is high even among children whose present weight is normal, said the report in the New England Journal of Medicine.

“Only those children with a current healthy weight have less than a 50 percent chance of becoming obese by the age of 35 years,” said the study, led by researchers at Harvard University.

Some 36.5 percent of the US adult population is now considered obese, a condition federal health officials define as having a body mass index of 30 or higher.

This future prediction mirrors existing adult trends, with over 70% of our population either just overweight or outright obese. If 57% of the next-gen adults are in the later category, how many will fall into the former? What’s the overall chart going to look like? 80%? 95? All of ’em??

A seemingly unrelated story about a lobster might explain part of the trouble. Might. The Pepsi part, maybe:

“I’m a Pepsi fan 100 per cent. I drink one cup of coffee in the morning and then Pepsi all day. On average it would be about 12 cans.”

12 cans. That’s like 2,000 calories and a month’s worth of sugar. Working on a lobster boat might help burn it. Sitting by the TeeVee or the Xbox will not.

Get up. Move. Exercise. Eat responsibly. Not that hard.

Or, if things, health wise, go south, then go South – to Mexico:

My son had an attack of appendicitis late Saturday night. I knew that the Obamacare inflated prices for surgery in the U.S. would be ridiculous and that the service would likely be impersonal, involve long waits, and be nerve-wracking. I have friends in the medical field so I inquired just for grins. The price for the latest routine appendectomy in my area was, my jaw dropped, $43,000. I read on-line that the average cost for an appendectomy in the U.S. is $33,000. I am not near some of the great direct-pay medical facilities in the U.S. like the Surgery Center of Oklahoma, but I am near Mexico. I chose that option since I have often utilized foreign medical and dental facilities in the past and find the service and prices to be outstanding.

The main first rate hospitals in this part of Arizona are run by the Catholic Church. They, of course, operate under the constraints of Obamacare and other onerous U.S. rules and can’t offer pure free-market rates. So, they are pricey along with all the others.

I opted for the nearby private Catholic hospital in Mexico driving past a Catholic hospital in the U.S. en route. I also drove past the state run socialist hospital in Mexico which of course has deplorable service and doesn’t serve Americans anyway. Most of the private hospitals in Mexico have great service, modern equipment and procedures, and affordable prices. You can actually have extensive conversations with surgeons and the rest of the medical staff. They are very patient, respectful, and understanding. We arrived on a Sunday morning. This counted as an emergency after-hours visit. The fees listed below are higher because of the Sunday call-out for surgical personnel and the extra fee for the emergency room doctor that could have been avoided if I had come during normal business hours.

$43,000 in the US, or $3,000 in Mexico – in a modern, efficient Mexico. Medically efficient, that is; they must be getting the government and insurance rackets wrong with prices like that. Something to work towards, amigos.

Think of the children, especially if you don’t live near the border. The roly-poly, not-so-little children…

Also think of that poor, delicious lobster. I wonder if you could successfully add Pepsi to the butter?

Hey! Hey! Hey! It’s fat lobster! Fat Albert/Bill Cosby.
