The Old College Try: Nation Concentrates on One of Many Higher Ed Scandals ***With Mueller Report Note***

A week or two back, the news broke of a DOJ crackdown on several score celebrities, all accused of bribing and lying their children’s way into elite colleges. The better-heeled Americans allegedly paid big money and told tall tales about Little Suzie; the colleges allegedly lapped it all up.

Some actresses I’d never heard of and some others stand indicted, facing prison time. Some of the children (not indicted) are “influencers,” celebrities because they are celebrities are some such rubbish. People like this undertake such nefarious actions because, A, they can, and B, because they’re kids were not bright enough to qualify otherwise.

Announcing the investigation, U.S. Attorney Andrew Lelling made an interesting statement: “For every student admitted through fraud, an honest and genuinely talented student was rejected. …

There’s a trend afoot in the news, education, and remembrances, collective. Chateau Heartiste has the scoop on half of it (of course I read CH sometimes):

In America, the public is given zero information on the “Weimar Republic,” the period in Germany post-WWI that led to the rise of the NationaI SociaIists in 1933.

This is deliberate. The period holds too many secrets to the modern world.

This thread will expose those secrets.

The other half of the trend, foisted via academia, involves shifting a certain blame for a certain atrocity from a certain villain and to some (formerly) good guys.

WHY?

Walter Williams (yet again) sheds light on the extent of college admissions cheating and fraud. The “ordinary” system blows the Hollywood trash out of the water.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, 70 percent of white high school graduates in 2016 enrolled in college, and 58 percent of black high school graduates enrolled in college. However, that year only 37 percent of white high school graduates tested as college-ready but colleges admitted 70 percent of them. Roughly 17 percent of black high school graduates tested as college-ready but colleges admitted 58 percent of them.

About 40 percent of college freshmen must take at least one remedial course. To deal with ill-prepared students, professors dumb down their courses so that students can get passing grades. Colleges also set up majors with little or no academic content so as to accommodate students with limited academic abilities. Such majors often include the term “studies”: ethnic studies, cultural studies, gender studies or American studies. The major selected by the most ill-prepared students, sadly enough, is education. When students’ SAT scores are ranked by intended major, education majors place 26th on a list of 38.

One gross example of administrative dishonesty surfaced at the University of North Carolina. A learning specialist hired to help UNC athletes found that 60 percent of the 183 members of the football and basketball teams read between fourth- and eighth-grade levels. About 10 percent read below a third-grade level. These athletes both graduated from high school and were admitted to UNC. More than likely, UNC is not alone in these practices because sports are the money-making center of many colleges.

Maybe the DOJ needs to look closer at the system itself. And given what we know about the quality, who the hell would pay extra in order to have a child admitted to such lunacy?

“Diversity” along with inclusion, tolerance, and hatred of Western Civilization is the mantra of today’s “culture” and of the “schools.” It’s good, just read what they have to say over at Great Schools:

Ironically, while our schools are becoming more segregated, our society is becoming ever more diverse. Some 44 percent of American students today are nonwhite, and that number rises every year. To prepare kids to be global citizens, we need to expose them to more than the quadratic equation and the history of the 13 colonies. It’s essential for our kids to learn to get along with and understand people from all walks of life.

In fact, diversity in education has been shown to promote tolerance. One recent study found, for example, that college students in diverse settings exhibited less racial and ethnic prejudice than students who interacted mainly with those of similar backgrounds.

Learning empathy, flexibility, and how to work with people from different backgrounds and cultures will prepare kids to navigate an increasingly multicultural future.

Hell, why learn any math at all? And, who (outside of evil white racists) needs anything to do with those forgotten Colonies? Geez … English and all that…

But, don’t take my word for it. And, don’t even take that of the vested interests at Globo Ed, Inc. Here’s a real-world example of the excitement and excellence that is the mixing of divergent cultures in the academic setting, all the way from Sweden!

Swedish girls are being kept home from school after newly-arrived migrant students turned the environment into “anarchy,” according to independent journalist Joakim Lamotte.

Lamotte says he was contacted by multiple parents from Halmstad, Sweden, after their children were threatened, beaten, and called “whores” at a school where migrants are allegedly dealing drugs and carrying weapons.

“In recent days I have been contacted by parents of children at the Österledskolan outside Halmstad,” Lamotte reports. “They describe a school where insecurity escalated and many now choose therefore to keep their children at home because the school cannot guarantee the children’s safety. According to the parents, it is a group of new arrivals who harass their daughters.”

Lamotte quotes the testimonies of anonymous parents who say accusations of “racism” are flying freely, hindering free discussion about the issues at hand.

“Threats and violations occur daily at school,” said one parent. “Our daughter, who goes to eighth grade, has been exposed since the second week of the seventh grade. She has been called, for example, ‘whore’ and threatened several times that she should get beaten.”

“The police have been summoned many times. Last week, the police were in place on three occasions. An ambulance has also been called to the school during assaults.”

Parents say they believe management are not taking the problems seriously, instead attacking those who raise concerns about conditions at the school.

“Right now, it is anarchy at the school and they have lost control completely,” said another parent. “At the same time, school management wants to silence what is happening and blame the events on racism. Racism certainly occurs, but I and many others do not see it as the problem.”

“The reason for this is special treatment and that the newly arrived young people are not integrated. On Friday, two girls were hit and kicked by the new arrivals.”

Lamotte says the head of school has hung the phone up on him during multiple attempts to contact him.

Selling drugs! Threats! Calling your daughter a whore! Hitting! Kicking! No charges filed! Heck, no investigation! The admin hangs up on you! And, general violence and mayhem like something out of the third world! This is your child’s school on DIEversity. Use your empathy. Be flexible. Navigate the destruction.

All that or rebel.

Degrees of Scandal in Rigging College Admissions

The DOJ cracks down hard on celebrity parents bribing elite colleges to admit their children.

Fifty people, including Hollywood stars Felicity Huffman and Lori Loughlin, were charged Tuesday in a scheme in which wealthy parents allegedly bribed college coaches and other insiders to get their children into some of the nation’s most elite schools.

Federal authorities called it the biggest college admissions scam ever prosecuted by the U.S. Justice Department, with the parents accused of paying an estimated $25 million in bribes.

“These parents are a catalog of wealth and privilege,” U.S. Attorney Andrew Lelling said in announcing the results of an investigation code-named Operation Varsity Blues.

…

“For every student admitted through fraud, an honest and genuinely talented student was rejected,” Lelling said.

Several defendants, including Huffman, were charged with conspiracy to commit fraud, punishable by up to 20 years in prison.

Focus on this very true statement: “For every student admitted through fraud, an honest and genuinely talented student was rejected.”

How is this scam any different than that of affirmative discrimination, outside of the massive difference in scale. Genuinely talented students lose out by the thousands or the millions, year to year and generation to generation. Just replace “rich parents” and “sake of their children” with “the state” and “globalization.” Fraud is fraud, even in a conspiracy theory. Nice of someone to notice. May the sentiment and the action spread.

And, for what it’s worth, I’ll bet a dollar to a Yale diploma that most of the elites being charged here generally support the government’s insidious programs as well. The enemy’s consistency again.

“D” Stands for Done – Grading NC Schools

education, failure, North Carolina, schools

If this ridiculous legislative idea becomes reality, then the government schools of North Carolina are finished. In fact, that it’s even a hopper item suggests that is already the case.

RALEIGH, N.C. – School employees in one state might be feeling happier these days after learning the bar for failing could be lowered, and by a lot.

The North Carolina legislature is considering a change in the grading system for the state’s public schools.

The bill in question would be based on a 15-point scale, rather than a 10-point scale for grades.

That would mean only scores lower than 39 percent would qualify for an F grade for schools, a far cry from the current 60 percent failure mark in the state and most others.

Student grades would be unaffected by the changing scale system, but would allow underperforming schools to continue operating.

Plenty has been made about lowering passing grades for students. So, it almost stands to “reason” that the same might be done for schools. But, why? If a school is failing, and cannot be redeemed, then shouldn’t it cease operations?

Is this even real? Cant be, can it? Well, yes, it is…

Meet HB 145 (2019), the “15-Point Scale For School Performance Grades” Bill

The madness is primarily sponsored by four Democrats from Charlotte:

The Corrosive BS of American Academia

As seen and chronicled by an American academic, Prof. Christian Smith of Notre Dame’s School of Sociology:

I have had nearly enough bullshit. The manure has piled up so deep in the hallways, classrooms, and administration buildings of American higher education that I am not sure how much longer I can wade through it and retain my sanity and integrity.

Even worse, the accumulated effects of all the academic BS are contributing to this country’s disastrous political condition and, ultimately, putting at risk the very viability and character of decent civilization. What do I mean by BS?

BS is the university’s loss of capacity to grapple with life’s Big Questions, because of our crisis of faith in truth, reality, reason, evidence, argument, civility, and our common humanity.

BS is the farce of what are actually “fragmentversities” claiming to be universities, of hyperspecialization and academic disciplines unable to talk with each other about obvious shared concerns.

BS is the expectation that a good education can be provided by institutions modeled organizationally on factories, state bureaucracies, and shopping malls — that is, by enormous universities processing hordes of students as if they were livestock, numbers waiting in line, and shopping consumers.

BS is universities hijacked by the relentless pursuit of money and prestige, including chasing rankings that they know are deeply flawed, at the expense of genuine educational excellence (to be distinguished from the vacuous “excellence” peddled by recruitment and “advancement” offices in every run-of-the-mill university).

BS is the ideologically infused jargon deployed by various fields to stake out in-group self-importance and insulate them from accountability to those not fluent in such solipsistic language games.

…

Read on and on about what BS is in higher “education.” Understand that, “the long-term corrosive effects on politics and culture can also be repaired only over the long term, if ever. There are no quick fixes here. So I do not speak in hyperbole by saying that our accumulated academic BS puts at risk decent civilization itself.”

Hope remains:

… We will need people with the capacity to retrieve and revitalize the best of higher education’s past and restructure it organizationally in ways that are most effective in the future.

History gives us some reason to hope that creative women and men will, over time, develop fruitful experiments and build new institutions that lead to a reblossoming of excellent higher education worthy of the name and help revitalize culture and political life. …

I’d like to help with the retrieval and revitalization. In addition to posts like this, a very few of you know of my ongoing covert work in this area. And, boy, does it need work.

There was that funny (and prophetic) Garfield panel from the 1980s. This one:

In modern Amerika, life imitates art: On average, people are shorter and fatter.

The average U.S. adult is overweight and just a few pounds from obese, thanks to average weight increases in all groups – but particularly whites and Hispanics.

Overall, the average height for men actually fell very slightly the past decade. There was no change for women.

One factor may be the shift in the country’s population. There’s a growing number of Mexican-Americans, and that group tends to be a little shorter, said one of the report’s authors, Cynthia Ogden of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The findings come from a 2015-16 health survey that measures height and weight. More than 5,000 U.S. adults took part.

CDC records date to the early 1960s, when the average man was a little over 5 feet, 8 inches tall and weighed 166 pounds. Now, men are almost 1 inch taller and more than 30 pounds heavier. But today’s average height of 5-foot-9 is about a tenth of an inch shorter than a decade ago.

The average woman in the early 1960s was 5-foot-3 and 140 pounds. Now, women are a half-inch taller and about 30 pounds heavier, on average. The average height is about the same as it was a decade earlier: 5-foot-4.

Other survey findings:

• In the last decade, the average weight of men rose about 2 pounds, to 198. For women, it rose 6 pounds, to nearly 171.

• Men have 40-inch waistlines, on average. Women’s waistlines are a little under 39 inches.

So, today’s big beautiful women are heavier, despite being a half foot shorter, than the men of yesteryear. And, with the average for both sexes bloating towards obesity, that means that a considerable percentage are obese, many grossly, morbidly so.

Because you asked, I’m right around the average male height but 20 pounds under the average male weight and six inches off the belt size. This, with a much lower than average BMI, half the body fat, and around twice the general physical strength.

It’s hardly surprising that these changes are coupled with shortening lifespans and the wild increase in various physical and mental maladies. Factor in the decreasing IQ’s and lack of education, and we have a problem.

I wonder how much of the increased average weight is tattoo ink?

Will not be a good thing. Sadly, many (maybe most) public schools are now, to one degree or another, converged to the point that education and instruction – the supposed core functions – take a back seat to the new god, diversity. This plan is failure at all costs.

New York is facing an educational disaster. Mayor Bill De Blasio’s socialist plan to end meritocratic entry to New York’s famed specialty schools – in performing arts, hard sciences, engineering, academic achievement – in the name of racial equality, is about to trigger a huge white flight. And not just white flight, Asian flight. Here’s an excellent report from New York Post columnist Karol Markowitz:

In a push to improve diversity at District 15 middle schools in Brooklyn, Mayor de Blasio last week approved a plan to remove admission standards at all of them.

If there’s no pretense even of academic rigor, what’s the point in attending. Many, as the article points out, won’t. They’ll take the tax base and flee. And, those proficiency percentages I like to cite? Prepare to watch them plummet.

PS: Wherever your kids go to school, take a close look at all those SCREENS. I’m aware of the irony – me typing this before one screen and you reading it off another – but this new tech age might just be a raw deal for humanity.

Quite the civics lesson at one Arkansas high school.

A high school newspaper in northwest Arkansas has been reinstated after it was suspended for publishing an article criticizing the transfer of five football players to a rival high school.

Publication of Har-ber High School’s The Herald was suspended after it published a months-long investigation into the transfer of five varsity players from Har-Ber to Springdale High School, its arch-rival within the Springdale Public Schools district.

The student newspaper reported that at least two of the players acknowledged that they did so to have a better chance of playing football, which would violate district policy.

The district instructed the newspaper’s teacher adviser, Karla Sprague, to remove the story from its website, and the article was taken down, according to BuzzFeed News.

A pattern across the country: schools violate their own rules and/or the law; students recognizes the malfeasance and report it; the schools crack down, usually in further violation of the law.

Karla Spraque should have forwarded the matter the AR DOE, the US DOE, the DOJ, the AR Attorney General, F.I.R.E, and, if necessary, the EEOC.

And, for funsies, let’s look at how “well” Har-ber High performs as an instructional institution. They boast a 90% graduation rate, even with only 55% reading proficiency and a whopping 26% mathematics proficiency rating. Wow! They do have an AP US government class. Maybe this case would make for an interesting current events discussion.
