This is more of a fitness update than a funny story. Or maybe it’s visa versa. I just write the stuff…

Since returning to the land of the fit I have dropped 18 pounds (182 with shoes off) since January. I’m about the same weight I was when I graduated high school. Just as strong but older, and slower to recover, and I have to count calories, and … anyway… During college I lived in the gym. When I escaped UGA I was a solid 220 and shockingly powerful. Then came the blissful decline.

Not so long ago I weighed in at a fat and pitiful 255 lbs – that was grossly obese and just plain gross. Late in 2012 I made major changes and have lived at an appropriate weight ever since. Two summers ago I dropped into the low 170s. That was a little light, I think. I wasn’t lifting much but I lost all surface fat and flab. Anyway, again, around this New Year’s Day I found myself at 199.9 lbs. I am proud of my progress. All it takes is a little culinary discipline and time with the heavy iron things.

The other day I handled such devices. After a decent bench-press session (topping out at 275 for 5 reps [not to shabby for 182!]) I did some incline dumbbell presses. My first set was with relatively light weights but I was shaky and off-balance which I attributed to old age and fatigue. I was readying for set number two when some dude walked up and said, “you know you have two different weights there.” So I did! I’m not old and weak, just blind and inattentive. I replaced the heavier one…

Later I decided to finish up with some flyes on the peck deck machine. A real cutie of about 25-30 was using it. She politely asked me if I wanted to work in. Delirious from my previous work I mumbled “yes”. She confidently said something about having a plan. I laughed and started telling her about my foibles with mismatched weights and being old. When I finished my ramble she was gone. I hope my senile babbling didn’t interfere with her plan though I was happy to get the machine all for myself.

Today was a shoulder and arm routine followed by Judo throws (dummy) and bag work. This is excellent cardio training with an even better purpose. I was thinking about Houdini the jihadi, similar street attacks, and how to counter them. Specifically, today I was thinking about how to approach (from behind) multiple thugs beating a victim. Like this:

inusanews.com

The walking sacks of sh!t in black were part of a pack beating the white man with the ripped white shirt (their work). Several others were off camera to the right. I think this was just prior to or just after Houdini’s chase and tackle. It could have been part of the same scene; hard to piece together from the videos. This stuff is real and getting worse by the day. The question in my mind was how would a civilized man respond to such a situation (without crudely resorting to a .45ACP or a Ka-bar – not that those are bad things…).

I had to image a hapless victim. Also, lacking walking sacks of sh!t (SOS) I substituted a line of four six-foot, 200 lbs heavy bags. My plan was to approach the first one (representing the sucker throwing the sucker punch above) slightly off-center and drop a heavy left elbow to the base of the skull/neck area. Note, this is potentially lethal – do not attempt at home. Actually, a mob – even unarmed – can constitute lethal force and a victim or intervening third-party is entitled to meet force with force. Or so it was in the old America. Where was I??? I then planned to slid over to SOS number two and land a right hammer-fist on his neck. Note, these are not “sporting” moves unless, of course, the sport is thug hunting.

Executed correctly this likely would have cleared the street. The other SOS thugs were out for a little fun, not a fight with someone willing to kill from the outset. They would have scattered immediately. If not they would have likely stood stunned thus making easy pickings.

I did not execute correctly – good enough for the street but not without consequences for me in the gym. I started dead centered between my hanging SOSs when I should have been closer to the one on the left. The elbow went off without a hitch though I found myself a little off-balance and perhaps a little further forward than I should have been. I was also closer to fake SOS number two. Rather than a hammer I launched more of a backhand right side jab. This may have worked better given the shortened range. I followed it up immediately with another hard left elbow – more of a power cross than a sweep. It would have worked well, technical imperfections aside.

For the finish I stepped forward and to the side to face off with the remaining fake SOSs. I halted the drill, realizing something was off. At close range and with rapid recoil my side jab had come back and, yes, I punched myself in the mouth… It didn’t stop me from improvising an end for SOS no. 2 and I would like to think in real life I would have continued unabated with the remaining garbage.

As it was, I stopped and pondered my clumsiness. Age? Balance? Blind? What was it? I still can’t come up with an explanation other than”sometimes the bag does hit back…” I loosened a tooth just enough to solicit a drop of blood. It didn’t hurt and has already tightened back up.

Tomorrow I’m going to try to use this rambling, sad story on another hottie with a plan so as to have equipment for myself. That’s my plan.

On a less pathetic note today I received the following fine and FREE t-shirt:

_20160605_192109.JPG

The “MF” stands for “My Father” not something else… “H-2K-CT” stands for the El Centurion, Habano 2000 from My Father Cigars.

If … when I wear this shirt to the gym I’m hoping no further mishaps occur. That’s the moral of this tedious story.  Or not.

The Cigar Industry vs. The Empire

A week or so back I noted the federal government’s considerable efforts to destroy the premium cigar industry in America. I’m planning a major story on the subject. Fortunately, I will be able to add this part – the industry strikes back:

nimbus-image-1464916610888

nimbus-image-1464916950214

Here’s the LAWSUIT.

I have glanced over the complaint. While it is not as extreme as I would like, it is a good start. We cannot take this or any other government abuse lying down. Hats off to Enrique and Co.

Divorce is Murder

What’s worse than a divorce? A divorce that ends in homicide. This is a case of that anti-family law I wrote about hating several years ago.

TALLAHASSEE — The shooting of a Florida State University law professor in his upscale neighborhood two years ago was part of a murder-for-hire scheme that may have been set in motion by a bitter divorce between Daniel Markel and his ex-wife, according to court records released Thursday.

…

Markel and his wife divorced in 2013, but before it was finalized court records show that the two fought over Wendi Adelson’s push to move her two small children to South Florida to be closer to her family. At the time of Markel’s death, the records show, the two were battling over money, with Adelson contending that Markel did not pay her as much as he was supposed to under their divorce agreement. Markel also complained that his mother-in-law was disparaging him and wanted the court to prohibit her from having unsupervised visits with his children.

  • Tampa Bay Times, June 2, 2016.

Sometimes one part just can’t rely on the system alone – hit-men make things a little easier and faster. A death in such a case is usually the man. (Men, like this poor fellow, only receive justice from the system once they are dead – if at all). Make of this case what you will.

More Proof From the District of Corruption

John W. Whitehead again does a masterful job pointing out the incomprehensible evil that flows out of D.C.

Writing for the New Yorker, investigative reporter Maria Bustillos concludes, “the machinery of our government seems to have taken on an irrational life of its own. We live in a surreal world in which a ‘transparent’ government insists on the need for secret courts; our President prosecutes whistle-blowers and maintains a secret ‘kill list’; and private information is collected in secret and stored indefinitely by intelligence agencies.”

It’s no coincidence that almost exactly three years after Snowden began his steady campaign to leak documents about the government’s illegal surveillance program, Congress is preparing to adopt legislation containing a secret provision that would expand the FBI’s powers to secretly read Americans’ emails without a court order.

Yes, you read that correctly.

The government is planning to push through secret legislation that would magnify its ability to secretly spy on us without a warrant.

After three years of lying to us about the real nature of the government’s spying program, feigning ignorance, dissembling, and playing at enacting real reforms, it turns out that what the government really wants is more power, more control, and more surveillance.

A secret provision tacked onto the 2017 Intelligence Authorization Act will actually make it easier for the government to spy on Americans’ emails as well as their phone calls.

If enacted, this law would build upon the Patriot Act’s authorization of National Security Letters (NSL) which allows the FBI to secretly demand—without prior approval from a judge and under a gag order that carries the penalty of a prison sentence—that banks, phone companies, and other businesses provide them with customer information and not disclose the demands to the person being investigated or even indicate that they have been subjected to an NSL.

You can read more about the Intelligence Authorization Act, S.B. 1705, HERE.

nimbus-image-1464917820994

None of this, none of it, surprises me. Everything that comes from the government is as toxic as mercury. You may not care about cigars, murder, or being spied on but, rest assured, big brother will eventually do something that will concern you. If you keep on voting for this band of criminals, you deserve what you get.

They Really Don’t Need a Stinking Warrant

America: THE land of freedom, right? Well, economically speaking, we certainly are freer than most of the world, say countries like Somalia or North Korea. It terms of developed, civilized nations, we’re number 11.

nimbus-image-1464816580423

Freedom Index 2016, Heritage.

Switzerland and Australia are numbers 4 and 5 under “free” by the way. Again, that’s economic freedom or the lack thereof – taxes, business regs, etc.

In terms of personal freedom America is nowhere near where it used to be. Those specific rights protected by the Constitution are all but a memory. The Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals just sided with the 5th, 6th and 11th Circuits to deep-six the Fourth Amendment and the protection against unreasonable searches of persons, papers, and things.

When law enforcement asks a company for cellphone records to track location data in an investigation, is that a search under the Fourth Amendment?

By a 12-3 vote, appellate court judges in Richmond, Virginia, on Monday ruled that it is not — and therefore does not require a warrant.

The 4th Circuit Court of Appeals upheld what is known as the third-party doctrine: a legal theory suggesting that consumers who knowingly and willingly surrender information to third parties therefore have “no reasonable expectation of privacy” in that information — regardless of how much information there is, or how revealing it is.

Research clearly shows that cell-site location data collected over time can reveal a tremendous amount of personal information — like where you live, where you work, when you travel, who you meet with, and who you sleep with. And it’s impossible to make a call without giving up your location to the cellphone company.

This issue will likely make it to the high court one day where this precedent will be upheld. The developing theory is that no-one, outside of government criminals like Hillary Clinton, has any right or expectation to privacy – anywhere or regarding anything.

Google.

There are ways around such blatantly  Unconstitutional measures. However, the “law” has decided that taken such tactical precautions is evidence of wrong-doing all by itself. Damned if you do, damned if you don’t. Such measures also elude the technical capabilities of most people anyway.

The worn-out line of the sheep goes: “If you’re not doing anything wrong, you have nothing to worry about.” Two problems there: 1) you don’t know what they consider “wrong”, and; 2) how about when the government is wrong? What then? Move to a freer country? There are at least ten out there – one right next door to the U.S. Sit in your house and do absolutely nothing? That can be considered an indication of criminal intent or an invitation for a “welfare check-in” by the police.

The odds are you do not have anything to worry about. Obey the government in general, don’t make any waves, and they will probably leave you alone. Probably was not what the Founders had in mind with the Bill of Rights though. They desired protection from ALL government overreach.

Overreach is all the government does these days. I noted the other day that the FDA is out to kill off the cigar industry. The draconian regulations are about to begin. I’ve got a lot more coming on that soon. Please note thought, if you read my thoughts on a cellular device (or most any device) the cops may be watching. Worried about that? You should be…

The old blog is humming along nicely. This is post number 495 (I have D.C. surrounded, yes). I have a couple of books out now, several more shaping up, and a few score more in the hopper. I’m slower than Christmas but I’m getting there.

Here are a few things I have a mind to produce:

More books. More and better and certainly better sellers (you can help by generously maxing out your credit cards on Amazon;

With the paper copies I’m going to include e-books (like this) and maybe even books on tape (or MP3 or whatever sells these days);

More blog traffic via a constantly improving platform. Many changes to come;

Some sort of live-action forum. The Perrin Lovett Show is on life support over at Youtube. Hopefully this sleeper program will revive one day and gain a little more structure and professional design and consistency. I’m also thinking about web-radio of some sort;

Webinars. Webinars are the future and seem to make some money. We could have cigar webinars, gun webinars, political webinars, even a webinar about guns that shoot cigars at politicians. Heck, the sky is the limit;

and…

I always wanted to teach something. The limited experience I have came with terrific feedback. I’m looking into teaching via Udemy or Pdemy as I selfishly refer to it. Here are some courses you may (or most likely may NOT) see from me on Udemy:

You Can’t Fight City Hall (But You Can Run Over It)

Government oppression and crime is everywhere – taxes, bailouts, murder, theft, speed limits, regulations, etc. One doesn’t have to look for examples anymore as the state will bring the crap right to your door (sometimes through it, warrant or not). My dear cigar industry friends are in the middle of yet another example of government overreach.

The FDA is about to start lowering the premium cigar business into the grave. Diane Katz explains:

The premium cigar market is populated by limited-edition products and seasonal blends, and most of the small businesses that produce them don’t have the $1 million or more that the FDA estimates it will cost to comply with the regulations. At the same time, the agency concedes that the benefits of the new rules “are difficult to quantify” and it “cannot predict the size of these benefits.”

What is particularly nonsensical is that these artisan products are not the target of the FDA’s latest regulatory crackdown, which is actually aimed at combating teen smoking and the popularization of e-cigarettes (despite the fact that subjecting e-cigarettes to the new regulations will hurt public health far more than protect it).

Indeed, hand-rolled premium cigars are not mass-produced and sold in convenience stores, nor do they contain the flavor additives that attract young smokers these days. They also aren’t meant to be inhaled. According to industry representatives, the market share of premium cigars is a mere 2 percent of all cigars sold each year in the United States. The typical consumer — an adult male — smokes only two premium cigars a week.

Even the FDA concedes that people who smoke cigars exclusively have a lower risk for many smoking-related diseases compared with cigarette smokers, as documented in the 2014 Surgeon General’s Report.

The FDA did consider excluding premium cigars in its proposed regulation. But that option was dropped in the final rule — reportedly at the behest of cigarette manufacturers that would rather the government squelch competition.

One need not like cigars or even approve of tobacco use to recognize that the new regulations are misguided and excessive. That’s all too common now that America is transforming from a land of liberty into an administrative state. Were Julius Caeser Newton to land here today, he never could have built his business. Legislation is pending to exempt premium cigar makers from the FDA’s latest power grab. There is no excuse for Congress not to approve it.

Actually, Diane, there’s just no excuse for Congress. There’s no excuse for the FDA nor any justification for its existence.

Cigar lovers, think of the FDA as a giant City Hall. The old saying goes, “You can’t fight city hall.” The old saying is wrong. City hall has been fought and has been beaten before, destroyed in fact. Consider the plight of Marvin Heemeyer. Heemeyer was oppressed by local criminal officials in Granby, Colorado. They stole and stole and stole; Heemeyer was left with no recourse. The disaffected business owner said, “I was always willing to be reasonable until I had to be unreasonable … Sometimes reasonable men must do unreasonable things.”

Heemeyer tried the official route. He petitioned, he appealed, he campaigned – all to no avail. He suspected local officials and gangsters were in cahoots against him; subsequent investigations confirmed this suspicion.

Then Heemeyer got unreasonable (really he got REASONABLE, if you think about it). He fought city hall – with an armored bulldozer. He “won” his case by running over city hall, the police station, several other government buildings, and a corrupt local business. The police, even the S.W.A.T. team, was powerless to stop him. Knowing the National Guard was coming for him with heavy weapons he got reckless and thus met his end. Still he remains an American hero.

Heemeyer used this armor-plated Komatsu D355A bulldozer to destroy 13 buildings in Granby, Colorado.

Heemeyer’s revenge. Wikipedia.

They don’t make a bulldozer big enough for the FDA’s enormous campus on New Hampshire Ave. Still, there must be some other reasonable actions we can consider in answer to the government’s unreasonable actions. If we choose to be unreasonable, to be unfree, we consent to live as serfs. I wonder if Heemeyer had a cigar in that tank?

FDA ASSAULTS CIGAR INDUSTRY

I like cigars. I hate government. I really really hate when government interferes with cigars. As if the regulations, restrictions and taxes, taxes, and even more taxes aren’t enough, now the FDA is hell-bent on yet more dastardly regulation of the good leaf.

This issue has been on my radar for a while but it was brought back to my attention over the past few weeks via murmurs I hear in the shops I frequent. Then I saw this Facebook post/plea from my friend Patrick Vivalo:

nimbus-image-1463964608610

Thank you Patrick (and re-post of Russell Wilder).

I think I signed the petition some time back. And I’m not really into petitions (or remembering them).

The FDA’s new rules would wreak havoc on the cigar business through some of the strangest, communist bullshit imaginable. “New” cigars, meaning those crafted since 2007, would have to be inspected and approved by Big Brother. Older, pre-2007 sticks would be exempt. The approval process (GAWD only knows how that will work) will be both time-consuming and onerously expensive – I’ve heard estimates in the hundreds of thousands per cigar type. And more and worse is to come.

WORLD EXCLUSIVE!!!!! I have the first ever photograph of a prototype FDA cigar inspector. Yes, this dude (or someone like him) will regulate our smokes:

U.S. FDA Office of Idiocy.

I could care less what the stated reasons for this unnecessary intrusion into my hobby are. I suspect the FDA wants to protect all of those children one is constantly tripping over at the local cigar shop – every bit as common as honest politicians and useful regulators!

Reading through the Constitution I found no authority for cigar regulation. I double checked, doubting my own senses. Still not there. In fact the word”cigar” does not appear even once in the text. Believe it or not, the FDA isn’t mentioned either. A reading of what is in there would lead one to think the government does not have legal authority to regulate cigars – or much of anything else. Odd, that. Not to worry; what the feds lack in legality, they make up for with threats and sheer violence. Tyranny, I think they call it.

Patrick and Russell and many others signed the petition. Russell even went to Washington (an act of supreme bravery and sacrifice) on a mission with other industry leaders to protest this meddlesome evil in Congress. I hate to say they failed … but here we are back at the petition again. (Two petitions – one for the criminals in Congress and one for the chief criminal in the Whitehouse.) I fear none of this will work.

A better, more comprehensive approach would be to get an honest member of Congress to initiate legislation to abolish the FDA entirely. Somehow humanity survived without it up until 1906. Given the departure of Ron Paul and Dennis Kucinich, it might be just as worthwhile to consult the Wizard of Oz on this matter…

Petitions, Congress, the President, and the various apparati of the bureaucracy are all by-products of the Constitution which established this particular corrupt government in the first place. Like all systems, this one was destined to grow dangerously out of control. Working within the system to fix the system is insane and self-defeating. The Constitution created the government; government killed the Constitution; “let’s have the government follow the Constitution!” Get it? It’s kind of like trying to get to know the termites and reason with them so they won’t eat your house. That won’t work. Tents and gas work.

Thomas Jefferson said, “the tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots & tyrants. It is it’s natural manure.” The tree is all but dead in Amerika despite the copious amounts of unnatural manure lying about D.C. At any rate, our “patriots” are now completely preoccupied with television, chasing fake money, sports, and other triviality. “Ain’t nobody got time for revolution!”

So we humbly petition our masters to mind their own business. These regulatory measures, very likely to come to pass, will not kill the business just yet. Life will go on. Children will be safe. Voodoo, busybody inspectors will be well paid.

You, the non-cigar reader, might pause to wonder why you should care about this issue. It doesn’t concern you directly. Yet, you rest assured the ever-benevolent forces of the state have some new regulatory scheme in mind for what does concern you. “First they came for the cigar lovers…”

Google.

I’ve been predictably slow in unraveling the case of those mystery cigars. The natural wrapper was pretty darn good – a little mild for me but very enjoyable. I’ll round that out later. The maduro needs more analysis. Right now, based on taste and draw, I’d say it was so-so. I’m due to try it again soon. Three things did jump out at me: the burn was perfect – perfect, no meandering at all; the construction, if a bit tight, was very good, and; the ash was a pure, chalky white color and of … extreme density. Based on all that I suspect the stick might have still been curing. A little time will tell. Time will also allow me to properly research the makers. Stay tuned for that.

Natural mystery stick.

Now, as with the cigar mystery, I am always working on projects here. I tentatively announce to you I am working on a super project, one involving great changes to the blog, my publications and works, and with me – all for the better. This will be a very exciting summer. My timeframe is August-ish. More to come soon.

Good night to all!

The Happy Little Cigar Book made me an expert of sorts. In addition to the “review” following I cultivate here people occasionally give me cigar gifts – something to try, judge review, etc. Yesterday a former law client and newly minted millionaire brought me two different boxes of allegedly hand-rolled smokes from the Dominican Republic.

BookCoverImage

Amazon it!

I know nothing of these cigars other than the larger is obviously a natural wrapper while the smaller is a maduro. They both appear well constructed and smell pretty good. I have never encountered either before in all my travels.

Google may be able to assist me with a little background. Anyway a review shall be forthcoming. I have no idea what to expect. I’ll post some pictures. Investigator Lovett is on the job.

In other news I recently sampled the new (to me) white-labeled Signature by Punch – a terrific little toro.

More to come – stay tuned.

This review follows on the heels of last week’s take on the Nestor Miranda Collection Marduro. Today I picked out a lovely Gordo Habano. I visited the tobacconist shortly after one of my most intense workouts in a very long time. No need to wait til tomorrow to be sore – I felt it in the gym… Even my taste buds were tired so I retreated to the house for several hours of rest, protein, water and pain pills. Post recovery I engaged the Habano.

IMG_20160417_192132218

Like what I did with the shrub there?

As one can see from my picture the Habano is flawlessly constructed (a few small veins near the cap). It is less oily and lighter in hue than its cousin. The burn and smoke is perfect. The ash is tight and light gray and holds beyond an inch with ease. The binder and wrapper are both Nicaraguan while the insides are Honduran, Nicaraguan, and Brazilian. The draw and burn are perfect.

This beauty is, to me, a tad milder than the Maduro – medium bodied and smoother. It has a hint of the earthiness but with a more woody (good like cedar) overtone. There is still a good deal of pepper though not to the point of being “spicy”.

Despite lacking any native elements the Habano exudes a more … island-like experience. Think of it as a slightly more relaxed or refined smoke – an educated tough guy, if you will.

While I remain partial to the Maduro I would definitely recommend this stick to anyone, especially those who occasionally depart their mild haunts for a little excitement. Nestor does it again. Two lighters up.

This evening I raise a toast to my friend Nestor Miranda in celebration of his excellent tobacco work. Specifically, I praise his “new” red labeled Maduro. Mine is a 6×60 Gordo. In a word: magnificent!

This baby came along late in 2014 or early 2015. The new collection replaced the already stellar Special Selection line – a favorite of mine. My Maduro, filled with Peruvian, Nicaraguan, and Dominican goodness, is bound by Esteli’s finest and wrapped in a beautiful dark Connecticut leaf. A work of art indeed. In fact, this was one smoke that required a lengthy visual examination prior to lighting in order to appreciate the high quality craftsmanship. The Maduro is also joined by a Connecticut and a Habano.

Nestor Miranda Collection

A tempting trio. Halfwheel.

The construction is flawless. Whenever I pick up a stick I do a little squeeze test so as to predict the draw. This big boy was a little tight. I am happy I disregarded my index finger’s assessment and trusted to Nestor’s brilliance. The draw is perfect, effortless. And, I have seen and smoked very few cigars that burn as evenly and as cleanly as this one. I’ve been working slowly at it for about thirty minutes and, to show, I have about an inch of whitish gray ash as uniform as could be imagined.

IMG_20160413_173453822_HDR

My Gordo prior to the fire.

The taste is superb. It definitely recalls the notes and character of the old line. This Gordo is medium bodied (maybe leaning towards the heavy side of medium) and the smoke is simply delightful. Oddly, this cigar would make just about any veteran happy and, at the same time, not make a newbie ill or regretful. There is Nicaraguan earthiness and leather aplenty to satisfy my base cravings. For me that alone would suffice. However, to be a little technical, I’m picking up terrific light peppery hints and maybe a velvet like coffee essence.

We all know I don’t have a rating system but, if I did, this is the part where I would call up five stars, a 90-something, two thumbs up, or something similarly exemplary. Let me just say it is damn good!

Nestor with a 250 pound Perrin (yeah, don’t miss that), circa 2010. Think that was a Special Selection Gordo in my hand.

Hats off to one of the baddest men in the tobacco business! A classic is reborn in astounding splendor. Put down the computer and get ye to the nearest tobacconist.
