Walter Williams on the Fraud of American Education

“Fraud” is the right word. The right “F” word, even more than “failed” or that other one.

The results from the 2017 National Assessment of Educational Progress,  America’s “Report Card,” are staggering:

It’s not a pretty story. Only 37 percent of 12th-graders tested proficient or better in reading, and only 25 percent did so in math. Among black students, only 17 percent tested proficient or better in reading, and just 7 percent reached at least a proficient level in math.

The atrocious NAEP performance is only a fraction of the bad news. Nationally, our high school graduation rate is over 80 percent. That means high school diplomas, which attest that these students can read and compute at a 12th-grade level, are conferred when 63 percent are not proficient in reading and 75 percent are not proficient in math. For blacks, the news is worse. Roughly 75 percent of black students received high school diplomas attesting that they could read and compute at the 12th-grade level. However, 83 percent could not read at that level, and 93 percent could not do math at that level. It’s grossly dishonest for the education establishment and politicians to boast about unprecedented graduation rates when the high school diplomas, for the most part, do not represent academic achievement. At best, they certify attendance.

Summarized in a sentence: Two-thirds of American high school graduates are functionally illiterate. This should shock and dismay more than just the writing set.

America’s national average IQ is falling decade by decade. This even as the children suffer more and more “education.” Some, like Georgia’s potential next Governor, Stacey Abrams (a great fiction writer, BTW), want universal, “free” college for everyone. What’s the point. Why go to college or even to high school if the result is a majority that can’t read or do basic math?

Various peoples of the older world had less formal education but were on average smarter than modern Americans. Such was the case in Victorian England. The verbosity and concomitant popularity of Varney the Vampire bears this out: what would be a “difficult” read by today’s low standards was immensely popular with the street urchin, drop-out boys and young men on the streets of 19th century London. Why? How?

It’s not definitively provable but it is suspected that the average IQ in Plato’s Athens was around 125 (SB or Wechsler) – 2 standard deviations above America’s average today (maybe three above tomorrow…). That was the average, with half being even higher. How many standardized tests were those kids back then subjected to? None, likely.

And as our system continues to fail and to fail more spectacularly, the only answer from the establishment is more and more of the same.

We’ll get more of the same on all fronts. More fraud. More failure. Look for it in next year’s report card.

It’s funny almost. There are so many ways to look at the following story from MIT Tech Review. The average IQ of a group or society is kind of important. It kind of bears on how well, how advanced than group or society does or becomes. The “G” factor and all else is as natural, atavistic, and genetic as any physical marker. People have known (or suspected) this forever. Now it’s hard science:

For decades genetic researchers have sought the hereditary factors behind intelligence, with little luck. But now gene studies have finally gotten big enough—and hence powerful enough—to zero in on genetic differences linked to IQ.

A year ago, no gene had ever been tied to performance on an IQ test. Since then, more than 500 have, thanks to gene studies involving more than 200,000 test takers. Results from an experiment correlating one million people’s DNA with their academic success are due at any time.

The discoveries mean we can now read the DNA of a young child and get a notion of how intelligent he or she will be, says Plomin, an American based at King’s College London, where he leads a long-term study of 13,000 pairs of British twins.

Plomin outlined the DNA IQ test scenario in January in a paper titled “The New Genetics of Intelligence,” making a case that parents will use direct-to-consumer tests to predict kids’ mental abilities and make schooling choices, a concept he calls precision education.

As of now, the predictions are not highly accurate. The DNA variations that have been linked to test scores explain less than 10 percent of the intelligence differences between the people of European ancestry who’ve been studied.

Okay, it’s a hardening science. DNA is still relatively new as a measurement subject, a novelty we’re still grappling with. The DNA-IQ link is brand, spanking new, subject to bugs. But those will be worked out – for better or for worse.

Current inaccuracy aside, some have legitimate concerns about the new testing:

Several educators contacted by MIT Technology Review reacted with alarm to the new developments, saying DNA tests should not be used to evaluate children’s academic prospects.

“The idea is we’ll have this information everywhere you go, like an RFID tag. Everyone will know who you are, what you are about. To me that is really scary,” says Catherine Bliss, a sociologist at the University of California, San Francisco, and author of a book questioning the use of genetics in social science.

“A world where people are slotted according to their inborn ability—well, that is Gattaca,” says Bliss. “That is eugenics.”

Several of my buzz words were hit upon right there.

The above-cited funniness comes from the cultural ramifications. Most people, centered up in that great parabolic shape, just don’t care about this stuff. Smarter people on the right … uh … maybe aren’t that smart. And they may suffer from spinal deformities. It’s some on the left who give us the delightful humor.

Some – not all – on the left claim to love science, logic, and reason. That is, they love it until the science interrupts the narrative. We are not, it seems, all the same. One can almost see this just by looking. The lust for scientific truth ends when it suggests as much as the eyes sometimes do. DNA says a lot. Some don’t want it heard. It’s like they don’t appreciate free speech. Turns out they don’t.

You surely recall The Bell Curve by Charles Murray. Murray was ahead of his time, a generation earlier than the new tests. His work examined the means and ends of IQ differences. Some rejected his findings and opinions. Murray tries to speak to college audiences only to be shouted down and run off by militant leftists. What, exactly, happened to the Spirit of Berkeley?

I happen to share the deep, genuine concerns about eugenics. I have no idea whether Catherine Bliss fits the bill but many on the left, while decrying potential eugenics in some areas of social order, happily support actual eugenics in other areas. Margaret Sanger’s ideas and procedures came from somewhere.

Anyway, for now this science is developing. I would not recommend running to any new site for testing, for you or your children. I smell snake oil from these start-ups. Too soon. But it will evolve. If you’re curious, then make sure to cross-reference the DNA results with a reliable, full battery from an established source (Stanford Binet or Wechsler).

Even the older, normed assessments are not fool-proof. Remember that, whatever score one gets, it is a general indicator. It measures raw ability and potential. It’s a good overall estimate but: *Actual performance may vary.* Exceptions may be found anywhere in the curve. Oddities manifest oddly at both ends.

Whether DNA or test-based, the exceptions, oddities, and generality should dictate a little caution. Persons, high, low, and average, should be left free to attempt fulfillment of and to the best of their abilities. The potential problem, within and without eugenic concern, is the potential mandating of class or tenure based upon initial scoring. That kind of central planning is one of the unproductive hallmarks of some on the left. Funny?

Researchers have discovered that when it comes to intelligence, you are what you watch.

While it is fair to say that certain shows are informative, there are plenty of trashy shows that do not offer any educational value. However, in addition to lacking substance, stupid television shows have also been proven to actually make people dumber.

Markus Appel, an Austrian psychologist and professor, tested a group of college students on various subjects. Before administering the test, half the students were given a story about a silly man making all sorts of bad decisions. After reading about the not-so-smart shenanigans of the character, those students performed worse on the tests than the students who had not read the story.

Appel blames the results on “media priming.” Media priming refers to the residual, often unintended, effects of being exposed to media. This can result in changes in behavior, opinions, or intelligence.

This means that watching a reality show with a dumb person on it might seem funny, but their stupidity is contagious.

I’m a little surprised the USA came in as high as it did. I would not be surprised if that number (and the global average) slips a little with each coming decade and/or generation. Are these scores, like age, just numbers?

A few thoughts:

  1. This may explain the popularity of television.
  2. 98 will have trouble returning to the moon. 86 will not go the first time. 72 might have trouble finding the thing with a telescope.
  3. Last week, in my rant against robots, I, with qualification, accepted CNBC’s average  “normal” score of 100. That was just wrong; 100 was the normed average from about a century ago for white Northern European populations. Those populations seem to be holding the average but the world at large is almost a whole standard deviation off (under).
  4. To those who cry “racist,” “white privilege,” “Eurocentric,” “cultural insensitivity,” or such rubbish, just reply: “China.”
  5. The study author(s) should probably forget even trying to discuss any of this at an American university.
  6. If US trends continue, we might want to forget the idea of the American university.

Super Smart Robots Seek Understanding, Citizenship, End of Mankind

Of all countries, Saudi Arabia has granted the first citizenship to a robot, a “female” robot.

LONDON: A humanoid robot took the stage at the Future Investment Initiative yesterday and had an amusing exchange with the host to the delight of hundreds of delegates.

Smartphones were held aloft as Sophia, a robot designed by Hong Kong company Hanson Robotics, gave a presentation that demonstrated her capacity for human expression.

Sophia made global headlines when she was granted Saudi citizenship, making the kingdom the first country in the world to offer its citizenship to a robot.

“I want to live and work with humans so I need to express the emotions to understand humans and build trust with people,” she said in an exchange with moderator Andrew Ross Sorkin.

Now she needs to veil up.

Fools salute their doom with raised smartphones. A robot “citizen” lies about building trust. The people sleep. The machines get smarter.

Super artificial intelligence is coming, and sooner than you might expect.

That’s according to SoftBank CEO Masayoshi Son. The Japanese billionaire spoke from the Future Investment Initiative in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia on Wednesday. In about 30 years, artificial intelligence will have an IQ of 10,000, Son says. By comparison, the average human IQ is 100 and genius is 200, according to Son. Mensa, “the High IQ society,” starts accepting members with an IQ score of 130.

The idea of machine learning becoming smarter than the human brain is often referred to as the “singularity.” When exactly this will happen is oft-debated among the tech community.

“Singularity is the concept that [mankind’s] brain will be surpassed, this is the tipping point, crossing point, that artificial intelligence, computer intelligence surpass [mankind’s] brain and that is happening in this century for sure. I would say there is no more debate, no more doubt,” Son says.

Son is particularly aggressive in his prediction of how soon the singularity will happen — in the “next 30 years or so,” he says.

“Thirty years from now, they are going to learn by themselves, they are maybe going to laugh at you and us,” Son says. “Today they look cute, they will stay cute, but they will be super smart.”

Currently, some robots are smarter than humans in some areas, says Son. “But 30 years from now, most of the subjects, they will be so much smarter than us. Because they are going to be a million times smarter than today, million times,” says Son.

“We mankind created tools, the premise was mankind were always smarter than the tool we invented so we control,” he says. “This is the first time … the tool becomes smarter than ourselves.”

Probably the last time too. The terminator will not look “cute” when it comes to your door.

The average human IQ (S.B. or Wechsler) is roughly 100; 200 is nearly unmeasurable hyper-genius. It’s a little harsh, but a “regular” genius looks (intellectually) upon a normal, 100-IQ individual the same way the average normie looks upon a retarded person. Something with an IQ 100 times the average (which sounds ridiculous, I’ll grant) will look upon all of us the way we look at ants or viruses.

We’ll be pests in their eyes; they’ll have Raid!

I have a nominal esoteric interest in formal education. I write, from time to time, about the schools, what they were, what they’ve become, and their modern failings.

To the point: increasingly, the “education” is worthless and is overly expensive. That’s a problem for students and for larger society.

The “liberal” takeover angle gets a decent amount of attention and rightly so. For instance, more and more schools abandon “AD” and “BC,” because PC. 10,001 other examples to go with that one.

But it’s not, as a whole, a purely left-right issue.

I follow a small number of my fellow WordPressers. I get daily updates. I read this one with thoughtful attention. Please do likewise. It’s by “The Homeless Adjunct” and, as might be expected, sheds light on the trials of the non-tenured, part-time faculty of America’s colleges and universities (75% of all instructors now). It’s bad.

This piece is a follow-up to an earlier post (2012). I think it was that one that made me follow Homeless. Read it too. Also consider her (slightly liberal – but mostly correct) take on the overall problem:

Within one generation, in five easy steps, not only have the scholars and intellectuals of the country been silenced and nearly wiped out, but the entire institution has been hijacked, and recreated as a machine through which future generations will ALL be impoverished, indebted and silenced. Now, low wage migrant professors teach repetitive courses they did not design to students who travel through on a kind of conveyor belt, only to be spit out, indebted and desperate into a jobless economy. The only people immediately benefitting inside this system are the administrative class – whores to the corporatized colonizers, earning money in this system in order to oversee this travesty. But the most important thing to keep in mind is this: The real winners, the only people truly benefitting from the big-picture meltdown of the American university are those people who, in the 1960s, saw those vibrant college campuses as a threat to their established power. They are the same people now working feverishly to dismantle other social structures, everything from Medicare and Social Security to the Post Office.

Looking at this wreckage of American academia, we have to acknowledge: They have won.

BUT these are victors who will never declare victory — because the carefully-maintained capitalist illusion of the “university education” still benefits them. Never, ever, admit that the university is dead. No, no. Quite the opposite. Instead, continue to insist that the university is the ONLY way to gain a successful, middle class life. Say that the university is mandatory for happiness in adulthood. All the while, maintain this low-wage precariate class of edu-migrants, continually mis-educate and indebt in the students to ensure their docility, pimp the institution out to corporate interests. It’s a win-win for those right wingers – they’ve crippled those in the country who would push back against them, and have so carefully and cleverly hijacked the educational institutions that they can now be turned into part of the neoliberal/neocon machinery, further benefitting the right-wing agenda.

So now what?

This ruination has taken about a generation. Will we be able to undo this damage? Can we force refunding of our public educational system? Can we professionalize faculty, drive out the administrative glut and corporate hijackers? Can we provide free or low-cost tuition and high-quality education to our students in a way that does NOT focus only on job training, but on high-level personal and intellectual development? I believe we can. But only if we understand this as a big picture issue, and refuse to allow those in government, or those corporate-owned media mouthpieces to divide and conquer us further. This ruinous rampage is part of the much larger attack on progressive values, on the institutions of social good. The battle isn’t only to reclaim the professoriate, to wipe out student debt, to raise educational outcomes — although each of those goals deserve to be fought for. But we will win a Pyrrhic victory at best unless we understand the nature of the larger war, and fight back in a much, much bigger way to reclaim the country’s values for the betterment of our citizens.

There’s more to it than that, but the five-point plan pretty well sums up the problem. This is something to truly consider if you’re off to college or have a youngin headed that way. Grades and test scores are up while IQs are down. Just too many degrees floating about. Faculty paid at 1970’s levels in 2017. A pathetic return on investment in many cases. Outside of a few (and shrinking) fields, an absence of actual learning. The death of critical thinking. Football coaches who view your daughter as a prostitute for the team and recruits. Get the picture?

For the adjunct faculty, Homeless and others, I may have a partial answer to the professional issues. Maybe, not sure. Just as there is a real thing called the IQ Communication Gap, that dictates an incredible difficulty related to and communicating with those 2 SD north or south of one’s own intelligence level, so there is also a real IQ cap on elite faculty – at places like Harvard, Yale, Oxford, etc.

The average student at Harvard (let’s call them representative of the elite students of the world) clocks in at 128 (W. or S.B.). That’s superior but not genius. The average faculty from these institutions rates around 133. And the curve is extremely narrow, clustering almost exclusively around that number.

Those too far below can’t make it for obvious reasons. Those above, however, suffer a similar yet more difficult to define exclusion. Around 135 there is a steep drop off. At 140 there is a collapse. One SD above the average, in the real genius range, the chances of obtaining elite teaching or research work effectively falls to zero.

This may be a product of the genius/near genius tendency for nonconformity. Or, it might have to do with the fact that we think and operate entirely differently that the rest of humanity. Whatever the cause, the effect is real.

I have a sneaking suspicion, one that might make a good thesis or research project for some psych. grad student. Anyway, I suspect that the average adjunct professional has a higher IQ than the average tenure track professional within a given institution. It’s even possible, as a whole, that average adjunct IQ exceeds that of the regular elite professors, as a whole. That could be a stretch – but not one too far. And that’s the faculty. I have no doubt I am 100% correct when comparing adjuncts to superfluous administrators.

Whatever the cause, the effects are real and felt. Please do read those above articles if you have half a modicum of interest in the subject.

Like Homeless I have some hope that the system may be salvageable. However, a better strategy is probably to abandon the schools and start new, better, and more modern alternatives. People are doing that with great success.

And, like the story of Cato’s cattle, it’s the great success that’s admirable.

Vox Day debated Andrew Anglin over whether National Socialism is of the political right. Vox, correctly, said, “no.” Anglin was supposed to take the other side, saying, “yes.” It wasn’t really a debate. Instead Vox made logical, informed, and accurate points while Anglin shrieked about “The Jews” and how little he understands (anything).

A commenter on Vox’s site summed it up as “IQ vs. JQ.” If you can make it partly through the whole hour, you’ll hear the 2 SD (likely 3-4 in this case) Hollingworth IQ communication gap in action. If you read some of the YouTube comments, you’ll see what another 2 SD drop looks like. At least, I sincerely hope you will…
