America, SJW, society, women, yoga pants

The first news item that caught my attention today was a piece on the declining readability of the internet. It turns out the authors are concerned about font ratios literally making pages unreadable. I though it was about the slowing induced by all the ads. Noticed that? My speed and machines are excellent yet I feel like I’m running in 1998. Maddening.

Then there’s the ridiculous growth of all things social justice on-line. I’ve noticed Facebook has become a non-stop outrage fest. I can’t complain there as I constantly pollute the news feed with stories like this (and thanks for clicking!). SJ is all over the news sites. Everyone is upset about something. Everything is a micro-aggression. Someone, somewhere really needs a good shaming. Like this:

An army of women in yoga pants marched on a man’s house after he was critical of yoga pants. Yoga Pants Matter!

BARRINGTON, R.I. — The saga began Wednesday with a letter to the editor in a local Rhode Island newspaper criticizing women over 20 who wear yoga pants in public. Quickly, it snowballed into a “Yoga Pants Parade” Sunday afternoon with hundreds of people walking past the letter writer’s house — and a few death threats, according to the author, who said he had only intended satire.

“To all yoga pant wearers, I struggle with my own physicality as I age,” wrote Alan Sorrentino, 63, in the letter published by the Barrington Times last week. “I don’t want to struggle with yours.”

The letter, which said adult women wearing yoga pants in public was comparable to men wearing Speedos to the grocery store, went viral. The backlash was immediate, passionate, and international.

It was supposed to be funny, Sorrentino said, because what kind of “tormented, uptight individual” could possibly care enough about yoga pants to write such a letter?

“It was in the face of all this political stuff, with all these really important issues going on, and then there’s this letter about yoga pants,” he said.

A crowd that included young girls and older women met in front of the Hampden Meadows School about 2 p.m., wearing a colorful array of yoga pants — although, as many attendees stated, the event was about more than just yoga pants.

“I don’t get involved in much in the way of protests and marches and all of that, but this just brought me out because the guy’s letter was offensive,” said Ellen Taylor at the parade, who sported a neon yellow shirt with the words “ ‘MATURE OLDER WOMAN’ in yoga pants” written on it.

“It’s OK if you’re 20 and gorgeous to wear yoga pants, but don’t do it if you’re older and lumpy and bumpy?” she asked.

Let me answer that last question: “Yes, 20 and hot is what we’re after with yoga pants.”

There. Have a nice night.

Seriously, it’s a free country (kind of, maybe). Anyone can wear yoga pants in public. Even those who perhaps shouldn’t. It’s a taste thing.

Really, I’m all for girl power or whatever would drive a middle-aged woman to the grocery store in gym clothes. They do beat pajamas. I get it – free country.

I also get free speech. People are supposed to write letters to editors. That free expression thing. Writing a reply would be a good counter move. Assembling a host of marchers and targeting the man’s house was a bit much. I wouldn’t say it had a chilling effect on free speech; maybe more of a sickening effect? The death threats, while not likely very serious, were downright criminal.

Then again, nothing is off the table for the SJW set, spandex-clad or not. Man with bad ideas (no matter how good) MUST be punished.

Yoga pants. Halloween costumes. Comments about the workplace. Comments about the lack of a workplace. No comments. Anything goes – so long as it’s really not that important. I wonder if any of these yoga pants warrior women have ever considered that:

The country is in tatters;

People are killing free speech;

People are killing each other;

We’re $20 Trillion plus in debt;

There are multiple wars raging;

D.C. wants nuclear war with Russia;

Veterans are being robbed by Washington crooks;

There’s (another) rigged election show underway;

The West is being overrun by terrorists;

Football ain’t what it once was.

No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, and no. Yoga pants. A march over a letter. ‘Merica. Social Justice.

I’m reading SJWs Always Lie by Vox Day right now. If you’ve ever had a run-in with the PC thought police nuts, you might want to get a copy. I’m still a little fuzzy on what GamerGate was but I do understand they handed it to the SJW crowd. Bravo.

In closing I’d like to make my own personal yoga pants plea. Yoga pants should only be worn by older, lumpy, hefty women. Young, hot, fit, college-age girls should never wear them. Now, sorority girls, if you would like to stage an appropriate protest, we can make arrangements…

Lesson in the Evils of Government, number 11,897,654,365,114,701: Thousands of California soldiers forced to repay enlistment bonuses a decade after going to war. The LA Times:

Short of troops to fight in Iraq and Afghanistan a decade ago, the California National Guard enticed thousands of soldiers with bonuses of $15,000 or more to reenlist and go to war.

Now the Pentagon is demanding the money back.

Nearly 10,000 soldiers, many of whom served multiple combat tours, have been ordered to repay large enlistment bonuses — and slapped with interest charges, wage garnishments and tax liens if they refuse — after audits revealed widespread overpayments by the California Guard at the height of the wars last decade.

Investigations have determined that lack of oversight allowed for widespread fraud and mismanagement by California Guard officials under pressure to meet enlistment targets.

But soldiers say the military is reneging on 10-year-old agreements and imposing severe financial hardship on veterans whose only mistake was to accept bonuses offered when the Pentagon needed to fill the ranks.

“These bonuses were used to keep people in,” said Christopher Van Meter, a 42-year-old former Army captain and Iraq veteran from Manteca, Calif., who says he refinanced his home mortgage to repay $25,000 in reenlistment bonuses and $21,000 in student loan repayments that the Army says he should not have received. “People like me just got screwed.”

…

The problem offers a dark perspective on the Pentagon’s use of hefty cash incentives to fill its all-volunteer force during the longest era of warfare in the nation’s history.

Even Guard officials concede that taking back the money from military veterans is distasteful.

“At the end of the day, the soldiers ended up paying the largest price,” said Maj. Gen. Matthew Beevers, deputy commander of the California Guard. “We’d be more than happy to absolve these people of their debts. We just can’t do it. We’d be breaking the law.”

The soldiers were paid, paid the price, and then got screwed. That pretty sums up the ordinary run-in with the state.

This story serves as a stark warning. The California Guard, the Army, the Pentagon, the Treasury, and the rest of Washington are simply not to be trusted. Ever. With anything. Believe nothing they say. Do nothing the ask. Accept nothing they offer. Flee them. They are evil.

And the line about “breaking the law” is a bullsh!t excuse. They didn’t mind breaking the law to go to war without a declaration. Or based completely on lies. They didn’t mind breaking the law when the banksters needed people to die so they could illegally profit from funny money not controlled by Congress. Only now, and only concerning the little people, is the law and honesty in finance important.

How much, total, could these bonuses have cost? $15 Million? $50 Million? $1 Billion? Why so much effort and persecution over so trivial an amount – if they even know how much they’re after. This is, after all, the same sorry outfit that cannot account for $6.5 Trillion, misplaced they know not where. No matter, except where the pennies of the soldiers are concerned.

The soldiers should be concerned. First, with their paid status. “Soldier” means, from the ancient Roman world, one who is paid to fight for the government. The term derives from the Latin, solidus, “solid” currency, as was the pay to the legions.

payagent

“We’ll just need this back after your legs are blown off and your kids are in college.” Fallon.

The Founders favored militias as a superior form of defense. Militiamen, literally fighting for their homes and families, are the best way to defend a Republic or a free state. Paid, professional soldiers are the tools of monarchs, tyrants and empires. And our Empire pays, then demands the money back. Indian giving, to be politically incorrect.

Second, those California guardsmen and the rest of the concerned public, should look at the employment status of the Guard as a whole. A few still maintain the lie that the N.G. is the modern militia. In truth it is only a reserve force for the regular, standing Imperial military. About the same time the several States foolishly traded their representation, tax authority, and currency to the charlatans on the Potomac, they also legally gave up their militias. The replacement “defense forces” generally serve as little more than traffic directors and storm cleanup agents. All of the power went to D.C.

So it was, that in 2005 when Hurricane Katrina came calling, the people of the Gulf found themselves short on first responders. The Louisiana Guard, being at the time in federal service, was far away keeping the world safe for banking profits. Pathetically, but still thankfully, the first military assistance came to New Orleans from Mexico and Canada.

The third consideration is the usage of the professional military – not for defense, but for profiteering and international meddling.

The final consideration, obviously, is the lying, cheating, back-stabbing ways of the government. Why any can still come to volunteer for this fraudulent force is a mystery. They can’t all be in it for the transgender benefits.

As this story serves as a warning, so let it serve as a call to action for all those who “support the troops”. They should shake the halls of Congress until the injustice is abated.

They won’t. They will make less murmur than they did about the underlying illegal wars themselves – wars we’re still fighting fifteen years later and with no end in sight. Millions will march on, enthusiastically paying their taxes and voting to continue the fraud.

Perhaps these lessons are learned by a few.

America, Barbara Olson, Federalist Society, power, Reagan the Shepherd, Ronald Reagan, Ted Olson, Washington

Memories of an increasingly distant past occasionally flutter through my mind. Some end up here: shotguns at football games, floods and rugs, Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter, etc. I think I once mentioned my meeting with President Carter and his wife outside the Governor’s entrance to the Georgia Capitol. Sweeter people were not to be found in Atlanta that afternoon.

As it happened I had, just the year before, met Reagan outside of D.C.

It was the warm summer of 2002. My then wife and I attended a Federalist Society leadership conference in Washington. I, despite my constant shunning of leadership, prepared to enter my second term as president of a Fed-Soc chapter.

Whatever else the Society may be or may have turned into, they hold pretty good conventions and even better parties. After a day of not-too-boring presentations, workshops, and speeches, the gathering removed from the urban center unto the genteel suburbs of Great Falls, Virginia.

The setting was the estate of then U.S. Solicitor General Ted Olson. I had met Ted the previous fall and I genuinely liked him. His has been a distinguished career, fighting for causes important and sometimes improbable.

Life and the greater world are not always so kind. Ted’s wife, Barbara, was murdered less than a year before on September eleventh. Still, he stoically (and in good humor) hosted a gracious affair. I’ve described these get togethers before. Elegant and sophisticated, with a who’s who list of conservative political celebrities. And a few surprises from the opposition. Power subdued by manners and wine.

This event was more laid back than most – a backyard barbecue, in a palatial backyard. I drifted from group to group. A sub-feature of the conference was the grooming of third-year law students for prominence in the Society and the greater legal community. I assume it worked with some.

I really did have a marvelous time. The company was pleasant (though the Ivy Leaguers incessantly talked in circles of immaterial pondering), the food was excellent, beer was free, the grounds Masters-esque.

At some point I found myself in a conversation out back. If I remember rightly it was with Ken and Alice Starr and Ted himself. Suddenly, and without pretense, up swaggered Reagan. All attention immediately turned to him. Ted made the obligatory introduction.

Now, if you’re searching your historical memory, you are on to something. At the time President Ronald Reagan was convalescing at home in California (departing only two years later). A few years ago Olson recounted his time working for the former President. Mine was a slightly different Reagan, a namesake.

australian_shepherd_5368307

Not Reagan, per se, though a good approximation. Pet Breeds.

This Reagan was one of Barbara Olson’s two Australian Shepherds (the other being named after Lady Thatcher). You see, while I did not meet THE Ronald Reagan, I did meet Reagan the dog. And he essentially stole the whole party.

Extraordinarily intelligent breeds, like the Shepherds, when not working will automatically seek out the best available companions. Thus, he came to me.

He was by far the most interesting member present. I remember him as a slightly larger than normal Ozzy, slightly shaggy but well-groomed. He exuded the charm and thoughtful contemplation for which the breed is famous. We talked, uninterrupted, for several minutes. He was the last person I thanked before leaving that evening.

I never did meet Barbara. Reading one of her books and watching her on television was the closest I ever came. Her taste in canine friends was impeccable. Through Reagan, Ted maintained a happy link to the past. Dogs are wonderful in that regard.

So it is that I recall my last substantive visit to fallen D.C. The failed chief city of the Old Republic held, at the time, an eerie sense of foreboding. It all makes sense now. And it is all okay, I suppose, all because I at least met Reagan.

America, exercise, fat, fitness, obesity

Americans, by and large, are by and LARGE. 70% or so are overweight or obese. That’s a problem. And it even extends into the military. Military Times reported yesterday that the number of overweight troops (all branches) is up fourfold from 2001.

Recent military health data shows that about 7.8 percent of the force — or about one in every 13 troops — is clinically overweight, defined by a body mass index greater than 25.

That figure has roughly doubled during the past five years and is up fourfold since 2001, when about 1.6 percent of troops were diagnosed as clinically overweight.

Top Pentagon officials are rewriting the forcewide guidelines for body composition standards and the methods for officially evaluating it. For individual troops, a diagnosis of obesity can stall a career or lead to involuntary separation, making these policies are central to military life.

Some Pentagon officials worry that overweight troops pose a threat to combat readiness because they may not be able to move as quickly in ground combat and if they are wounded, it is more difficult for their buddies to pull them to safety.

In the military some of the overweight, maybe most, are individuals who are muscle-heavy. BMI is a dumb number that does not differentiate between fat and muscle. Still, many soldiers, sailors, and airmen are tubby. Jarheads are safe. The trend is growing like that in the general population.

fat-cute-soldiers-3

Not going to beat the Russians … or the mortality odds. Web Ecoist.

I sat down with a segment of that broader population yesterday afternoon. I was at one of America’s better cigar shops (what’s new?). There, I pounded through my review of The Nine Laws. As I did so I listened to and vaguely participated in three or four conversations.

A crazed Scottish biker raved about drunkenly dodging his armed and angry wife the night before. (Stereotypes exist for a reason, folks…). The rest of the topics concerned personal health. The lack thereof, rather. These men are my friends or at least pleasant acquaintances. They’re middle-aged to older and better off financially and socially than most. They’re also, as a group, a bit on the round side.

Some talked about their recent visits to the doctor. Others were headed to the doctor. One was recently released from the hospital. Blood pressure up. Weight up. Cholesterol up. Medication doses up. Insurance rates up. Etc. Good meals were a frequent side topic. Good Scotch and Bourbon was consumed generously right then and there.

I generally ignored the mildly depressing announcements of ailment and woe.

Then Big Brian walked in. Something was immediately and noticeably different. Big Brian ain’t so big as he used to be. Once somewhere in the 330-350 lb. neighborhood he’s now down to around 270.

His doctor told him to lose weight or die. It scared him into action. And action he took. Drastic action. He adjusted his diet and lifestyle and the pounds began to flee.

He sat down and immediately directed questions at me, the house fitness nut. At 270 he’s ready to start phase two: working out.

This conversation I actively participated in. I recommended one of the best gyms in the Southeast. Work permitting, he’ll sign up next week. I estimate, with steady work, he’ll be down to 220 in 6 months. That’s over 100 pounds dropped in less than a year. That’s amazing.

I say “Big Brian” because that’s his name and because he’s a large man. Probably 6’3″ or 6’4″. He can carry 220 or so in healthy fashion.

Of course, he has choices to make. Given his age, intelligence, and size, he could easily and rapidly convert into a powerlifter or a bodybuilder. It’s possible that in 6 months he might still weigh 270, though of a totally different composition.

I think he’ll opt to go slim and lean. However, it’s nice to have options.

If he can do it, you can do it. The soldiers can do it. 70% of America can too. Become a loser and be a winner.

As for yours truly, I’m doing fine this week. Nothing serious to report. My back has fully recovered from the dead-lifting fiasco last week. I even did a light test set the other day. Things are great, except…

I’m supposed to take a murder of middle school preteen / teen girls to a large amusement park next week. It’s Howl-o-Scream or run Daddy into the ground night or something. I’m sure they’ll have a blast. I ‘d prefer to throw my back again. Prayers, please…

America, civilization, Fred Reed

Fred Reed, archetypal curmudgeon, probably has the greatest wit, wisdom, and brutal honesty of any commentator today. His latest to consider, concerning the failing election in the failed country:

Hillary’s attitude toward America has for years been implicit in our ruling class in New York. Having little in common with the rest of the country, they speak of most of it as Flyover Land, a realm of intellectual darkness and barbarism separating Manhattan and Hollywood. So far as I know, this is the first time the elites have had the confidence, if not necessarily the judgement, to say it plainly.

Let’s not delude ourselves. America is ruled by the Five Cities, Boston, New York, Washington, Tel Aviv, and Hollywood. The rest of us just pay taxes. The heart of the beast is New York, the Ivies being its nursery and Washington its storefront.

…

But America is more fragile than it looks. Its people cannot feed themselves. The economy really can collapse. If civil unrest broke the link from farm to cities, in two weeks New Yorkers would be eating each other. Soft white urbanites eeeeking and squealing about guns cannot defend themselves.

There is a certain comfort in the uncomfortable. Knowledge is power or, at least, humor.

The Election Defection Connection

America, election, fraud, politics

I am really getting tired of this election. This political theater. In fact, I’m getting tired of American politics, period.

The problem with practical politics is similar to that of higher education (in America) – it has nothing substantive to offer to the honest citizen.

That show and spectacle from Las Vegas last night was pitiful. There are so many deadly serious issues out there. Hillary and Donald are aware of them and they dance around them. Talking points only. It’s all an effort to be seen – not to do anything productive.

Imagine a book, let’s say A Brief History of Time. There are some heavy ideas in that little book. Now, drop it into a goldfish tank. The fish will swim around it, shimmering as they twist and turn. The fish are in close proximity to the heavy ideas but attention is only drawn to their shiny movement. And their movement is their only concern. It’s a show about nothing.

By the way, this was only an example. I in no way wish to demean goldfish by comparing them to politicians. The fish have value and real purpose, however slight.

Wikileaks came up last night. Hillary again said it’s the Russians. She said U.S. Intel says it’s the Russians. It is not the Russians. Regardless, Drudge and the Alt-Media made hay last night of another Podesta email from Wiki. They claim the Dems want illegals to vote. They do. Remember, I spent years in the system; I know these people. They want illegals, felons, pets, the dead, and the fictitious to vote – for their guys and gals. They wanted this 20 years ago – nothing new.

But the particular email cited only concerns illegals by implication. Its subject is ease of voter registration primarily for citizens. One could argue that some of the ideas tossed around in the chain could lead to illegal non-citizen voting. However, what they were concerned with is the 50 million American citizens who are not registered to vote.

One of the participants pointed out that it really isn’t that good of an issue. 50 million are not registered; 180 million are. If 78% of people can figure it out, what’s the problem?

My take is that, like college dropouts, the unregistered may exist because the system isn’t worth participating in. Sure, some want to vote but miss deadlines, etc. But these numbers are not static – they cross multiple elections and years. If one misses the last election, one would make sure to register in time for the next. If it were really important. It’s not. Enter the goldfish and the book.

Daily Dot.

Anyway, it will be nice when December (not November) comes and goes and takes this clown show with it. Then we can move on to the next war, the next recession, the next issue in the book the goldfish can’t read.

Wow. Could not finish that one.

Hillary did get to the debt bomb first, I think. Yes, yes, Bill was just about to start bringing down the debt – GAAP be damned. That’s a problem in Washington; even if you set up a plan that would work, the next president can easily undue it all.

Anyway, this debate was pointless.

I did however, right in the middle of the madness, get slapped in the face by a mental reminder from the ancient world. I have no plan, no theory. Yet. Not a suggestion, just a mere thought. Just an idea that jumped up while I was agonizing over the split screen images of the two candidates.

The Roman Republic didn’t have a presidency. Rather, the chief executive office was split between not one, but two Consuls. They were elected together and served ONE YEAR terms. They alternated who was actually in charge, or who had final say, monthly. **After the advent of the Empire, neither Consult had any real power.

How about we stick both these clowns in the White House under such an arrangement! Could it really be any worse than it already is?

Well, yeah … maybe.

The (on-books) federal debt increased $236,991,525,500.74 between the first Trump/Clinton debate and yesterday. That’s 22 days and nearly a quarter-Trillion dollars.

I don’t recall either candidate addressing this problem. I also can’t seem remember hearing either propose the cuts necessary to halt the growth, let alone reverse it.

We’ll see what tonight brings. Speaking of that, I have to dig out my boots and find the shovel.

Higher Problems, Lower Education

America, college, culture, debt, education, lies, students

The following story came across my LinkedIn feed: The Biggest Crisis in Higher Ed Isn’t Student Debt, It’s Students Who Don’t Graduate. It’s an op-ed by Michael Crow, President of Arizona State University.

There is a lot of talk these days about student debt and the challenges that families face managing this burden. Rightfully so, particularly at a time when too many families are struggling with flat wages and rising costs. But the discussion of a debt crisis often fails to address what I would argue is the greater crisis: the fact that more than half of those who start college fail to finish.

Think about it: Tens of millions of people in the US are saddled with student debt and have no degree to help pay it off. They won’t get the substantial return on their investment—graduates with a bachelor’s degree earn about $1 million more in additional income over their lifetime than those with only a high school diploma—and they typically have not developed the adaptive learning skills that will help them prosper in a rapidly changing economy.

In too many cases, they may never recover, leaving them feeling frustrated and bitter, disenfranchised and unable to find a way to better jobs and greater opportunity. Too many, saddled with debt and lacking a degree, feel trapped.

According to US Department of Education data, the ability to repay college loans depends more on whether a student graduated than on how much debt they are carrying. The research also found that students who don’t graduate are three times more likely to default on their loans than those who do.

Adding to this sobering picture is the reality that only 15 percent of the bottom half of the US population (based on family income) have earned a college degree and only 9 percent among the bottom quarter. At a time when the majority of new jobs require post-secondary education, this is a national shame. Not only does it limit individual socioeconomic advancement, it minimizes the country’s capacity to make the most of talent that exists at every level and in every neighborhood.

This completion crisis is alarming, but it is fixable.

First, the $1 Million more in salary is a myth. James Altucher, among others, blew that to pieces. If you have kids looking at college, don’t let them be deluded. The myth was partly true a long time ago. It no longer makes any sense.

Even less sense is made from the unGodly debts students pile up in pursuit of an education that really isn’t. There’s a profound reason why the debt is such a concern. It isn’t worth it. College isn’t worth the money.

And those who drop out without finishing their degrees testify to the lack of value. Why stay for something with a low or non-existent return on investment? Why go so deeply in debt for it.

So, these problems are inter-connected and they are all worth considering; they are important. But I disagree with Crow on the graduation rate itself being the main problem.

His solution at ASU is a program that partners corporate employers with schools to cover costs and facilitate continued enrollment. I see that as a scheme to keep more students paying. Yes, more will graduate. But what do they get for their efforts?

By and large, college education in America is a hoax. Colleges long ago threw academic standards and actual learning under the school bus. Now the schools wage a war on men. Students are told that “to me a man” is terrible. They’re told manly fitness is toxic. There’s a war on European-Americans too. Students are told that just to be white is to be racist.

This isn’t education. This is bullsh!t. It’s indoctrination into a failed and useless culture of wimps and communists. Who needs it? Who needs four years of it? Who needs $200,000 in debt for it?

Outside of a few technical and professional fields, there is simply no valid reason to waste time pursuing the college experience. It’s an empty experience where most learning is self-induced and incidental. Real, liberal, classical education is easily obtained via independent study.

And college, the industry’s money-based lies aside, is not for everyone. Maybe 10% should be in higher education. Those who seek honest academic progress should only go if they can go for free or next to free. Even the best education isn’t worth a penny of debt.

Colleges and universities sell a product that most cannot afford and do not need. And the prospective customers are far better off without the debased social justice warrior lunacy. like this:

zisko

WTH?? Worse than worthless. ImageFlip.

From an institutional perspective I suppose declining graduation rates would be second in concern only to decreasing overall enrollment. Both mean less money for the schools. The problem for the rest of us is that those schools now peddle expensive dribble that hurts the culture and crushes the individual soul. They are the drug dealers of the Ivory Tower.

How To Survive A Nuclear War

Over the weekend, while some fretted about Trump groping hoaxes, felon ball, and “men” wearing makeup, the military went into defense readiness condition “DEFCON” level three. DEFCON 3 is heightened readiness. 5 means no threat. 4 is increased intelligence activity. We appear headed towards 2 – serious preparation for war. DEFCON 1 means war imminent within one hour.

None of this is as important as finding the proper place for personal pronouns against the patriarchy though it is pretty serious business. We’re now closer to nuclear confrontation than we have been in the past sixty years.

weirdal

Christmas at ground zero? Weird Al.

As such I put together this little guide for survival:

Don’t Elect Idiots To High Office

Oops. That ship has sailed. The selection of homicidal maniac politicians has become America’s other national pastime. Go on. Make herstory with Hillary and then move on to:

Live Where The War Isn’t (or Won’t Be)

The odds of war are still pretty low. And, if it happens, it will likely be localized, a regional affair, say in eastern Europe of Syria. A few Russian and American military bases, industrial centers, and communications installations might be hit. Populated areas around those centers might be destroyed. On the positive side, Washington D.C. might cease to exist. Anyway, try not to live in or around places like that.

In the event of all out war, continental America, Europe, and Russian, and maybe some other places are toast. Conceivably, any place with people could be targeted.

Move to Antarctica. On The Beach radiation drift theory aside, that continent will be the safest place on Earth. If you want to eat, bring the food with you. It may be a little chilly. Skiers and snowman enthusiasts will be in paradise.

Alternatively, leaving Earth would be a safe bet. If you have a rocket and sufficient supplies, consider outer space. This may be rather difficult. So….

Go Underground

Deep underground. Ideally, you want about 1,000 feet of rock between you and the outside world. Be prepared to stay down there for a while.

The U.S. used to maintain a system of fallout shelters. The Russians still do. These places will provide no protection against a direct strike but will ease the effects of indirect bombings. Go dig you a hole. Or,

Just Survive

The main dangers of a nuclear blast are: intense heat; extreme pressure, and; radioactive fallout. The first two are inescapable barring the use of some sort of nonexistent EM shielding (or 1,000 feet or granite). The further from the blast, the lower the risk from those.

It is possible that some very few people will endure the fallout without taking extraordinary precaution. Just as some have an inexplicable immunity to lethal diseases, some have higher tolerance to radiation. And the radiation may dissipate faster than expected.

This option requires the least effort (none) but it is a bit of a gamble. Americans love to gamble. So, just think of it as fantasy fallout league. Invite your friends to play. Make up some team names.

People wrote up plans like this from the 1950 through the 80s. Happily they were never useful. Hopefully it will be like that this century. Can you imagine the effect of a war on the Pokemon industry? I shutter to think of it.

BONUS! (Items to Hoard)

  • Canned food;
  • Water;
  • Breathable air;
  • Cigars – lots and lots of them;
  • Booze (maybe some dope);
  • A pistol;
  • The neighborhood SJW, a politician or a banker (you’ll need some reason to justify the pistol).

You’re welcome.
