That Tiger Woods is. I was sometimes irritated with the old Tiger, always impressed. But, this comeback and the victory at Augusta was something different. He earned the Medal:

President Trump presented Tiger Woods with the Presidential Medal of Freedom in the White House Rose Garden Monday, calling the champion golfer “a global symbol of American excellence, devotion and drive.”

“Tiger, we are inspired by everything you’ve become and attained. The job you’ve done is incredible,” Trump said to Woods. “Your spectacular achievements on the golf course, your triumph over physical adversity and your relentless will to win, win, win; these qualities embody the American spirit of pushing boundaries, defying limits and always striving for greatness.”

Trump, an avid golfer who played with Woods at the president’s golf club in Florida this past February, also referred to Woods as “a true legend, an extraordinary athlete who has transformed golf and achieved new levels of dominance.”

“He’s also a great person. He’s a great guy,” Trump added.

And, he’s a great guy.

This column addresses three topics of great importance, in reverse chronological order. The originally intended subject comes last, after two of perhaps greater relevance and general interest. This is good stuff (great, even); read on:

International Desk: Only the Building Burned. The Church is Adamant, the French Spirit Indomitable.

You’ve heard the news. The world knows. Paris’s landmark, 850-year-old Notre Dame Cathedral suffered extensive fire damage on Monday, April 15th.

I learned of the tragedy while, of all things, leading a discussion en Français with a group of talented young people. My first thought was, “that’s a maintenance accident!” Thus I thought because the inferno was emanating from the roof and attic. And, I’ve seen this exact scenario before in Athens, Georgia, of all places.

On a summer day in 1995, I traversed North Campus. Smoke I smelled and then saw. Brooks Hall, then home to the Terry College of Business (the same MB goes on about) was burning. Bad. They had been conducting roof renovations and some jackleg ignited the attic whilst welding. We lost two floors that day.

So it most likely was in Paris. Notre Dame’s roof is a thin cladding of lead over centuries-old timber framing. Dry, dry, dry wood possibly treated with pitch or tar(?). The lead requires soldering from time to time but they have to be extra careful given what lies beneath. On Monday something slipped. Bad. You know the deal – the central spire collapsed, the roof is gone, and complete destruction was narrowly averted by 500 doggedly determined firemen.

I am not yet ready to embrace any theory aside from this obvious scenario. Yes, I’ve seen some pictures. And, y’all know I have a keen sense of affairs and a vivid imagination. As is, I don’t (yet) buy the Islamic Jihad or false flag angles. I have, however, sensed a tremor in the force of Western Civilization.

Ladies and Gentlement, Tiger Woods.

AUGUSTA, Ga. — Tiger Woods has done it again. After an 11-year drought, golf’s most polarizing and popular figure has added another major to his dossier, outlasting a star-studded leaderboard on Sunday by posting a final round 2-under 70 to win the 2019 Masters. It’s his first major win since the 2008 U.S. Open, 15th of his career and first at Augusta National since 2005.

I survived another Masters Tournament!  And what an affair it was – one of the best in great period of bests!  Tiger didn’t win but he did greatly improve over his recent forays. None of my favorites made it either.  Hats off to Jordan Spieth.  What a showing!

The show over at the Hooters’s tent on Washington Road was outstanding as well:

(The one and only John Daly made it to the Top Shelf Cigar table.  Thanks Big John!)

(My friend’s band, Shinebox, entertained.)

(How about John Daly performing with Shinebox!?)

Seriously, who knew Daly can sing?  He sang Knockin’ on Heaven’s Door by Bob Dylan. And, he was good.  That’s Big John in the above picture on the left.  I have a video of the whole song.  Shinebox is disappointed as you must be that I lack the technological know how to post it.  It’s coming along with blog-related videos.  Remember, I have the tech skills of a possum.

(It was a great week.  Join us next year.)

As a happy aside – we just celebrated tax day!  Another best of best days but some are perplexed: “As they rush to file their taxes by April 15, Americans are rightfully frustrated with the complexity of the 74,608-page-long federal tax code.”  The Not-So-Affordable Care Act (just another tax) added a measly three thousand pages…  What’s there to complain about?

Today I published An Unexpected Gift: Christmas at the Supreme Court, a celebration of the Court’s ruling in Rodriguez vs. United States, April 21, 2015.  Give it a read.  I’m working on a few more heavy hitters, one of which might make it out today.  Stay tuned.

fun, Masters Tournament, Tiger Woods

Yesterday I predicted Tiger Woods would fail to make the cut at this year’s Masters. Today I’m not so sure.  For years Tiger has been the most serious-minded man on the course – any course.  No smiling, little communication, no emotion until some injury, missed shot, or drama kicks in and sidelines him.  Something has changed.

I have reports from the practice rounds – made clear by the Par Three tournament footage – that Tiger is having fun. He’s loosened up.  He’s talking with fans.  He’s smiling.  He’s frolicking. “Tiger Woods was frolicking with his children as he showed up for the Par-3 Contest for the first time in 11 years.” If he keeps it up we may see him through the weekend.

Be like Mr. Woods.  Whatever you’re doing, have some fun with it.  The details usually take care of themselves.  The fun part will take care of you.

Happy Masters!
