Two Announcements for a Sunday

There’s more, much more, lurking and brewing about the Syria mess. Maybe not all bad, but all very interesting. That can wait.

Two items of critically less importance:

First: Sometime this coming week I shall fulfill my appointment as the C.F. Floyd Feature Writer of National Affairs for The Piedmont Chronicles. Charles Floyd was, of course, a titan of curmudgeonly intellectual action. Now I imagine he is still a terror to the Highlands gentry. TPC is of similar size and reach as this “highly respected web log.” What we’re pushing for with “national affairs” is syndication of national scope. Cro$$ those figures, dear readers.

Second: Laura Branigan, Gloria, 1982:

Why? Because.

cigars, music

Sunday, at the end of a heated political post, I kind of alluded to something about kicking off the new week with either music or cigars. Then, yesterday, I came right back with a heavy on … more politics and social decay.

Okay, okay, okay. Apologies.

To make up for it all here’s a Twofer Combo!

Brad Paisley, The Cigar Song, YouTube.

See? It’s music … about cigars…

The site will improve immediately. Later. Maybe with killer robots…

Enjoy!

Yeah, I smoke ’em one by one…

Everly Brothers, music

I so tire of the politics, the economics, the robots, the stupidity, and the general turmoil. I really do. That and the success of yesterday’s Dream post prompted this:

You’re welcome and I thank You.

So yesterday, in a snarky political posting, I utilized (abused) some Everly Brothers (Boudleaux Bryant) lyrics. One thing as usual led to another, and anyway: here’s the whole song:

Trivia time!!! The EB edition happens to be the only song to ever hold all Number 1 positions on all charts at the same time, on June 2, 1958! And you know you like it.

You’re welcome. Now, dream away.

So, here’s today’s Prepper News Weekly for FP:

Perrin Lovett/FPTV/YouTube.

And, since you’re here, and this tunes in my head, here’s a couple of takes on John Prine’s Paradise.

Prine

Johnny Cash (my favorite because he inverted the timber and land parts)

Buffett (live)

There are quiet a few more: Tom T. Hall (whom I used to speak to from time to time); Denver; etc.

Why? Just because. Now it’s in your heads too.

Happy Friday.

Malcolm Young, music

Hard Rock will probably never be the same.

Malcolm Young, guitarist and co-founder of AC/DC, died Saturday at the age of 64. Young had been suffering with dementia for the past three years, an illness that forced his retirement from the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame-inducted band he founded with his brother Angus Young in 1973.

Guitarist opens up about enlisting Axl Rose and fate of legendary hard rock band
“Today it is with deep heartfelt sadness that AC/DC has to announce the passing of Malcolm Young,” AC/DC wrote in a statement.

“Malcolm, along with Angus, was the founder and creator of AC/DC. With enormous dedication and commitment he was the driving force behind the band. As a guitarist, songwriter and visionary he was a perfectionist and a unique man. He always stuck to his guns and did and said exactly what he wanted. He took great pride in all that he endeavored. His loyalty to the fans was unsurpassed.”

Halloween, music

Politics! Guns! Cigars!

There. Got that out of the way…

Now: the music for Great Pumpkin Night:

Werewolves of London, Warren Zevon, 1978.

R-2221286-1345014745-6414.jpeg

Zevon (RIP)/Asylum.

Werewolves, Alternate Take, Zevon, 2007 Release. I know more than a few people don’t like this version. Then again, more than a few people can be wrong. Cool, jazzy, and you always have the ability to listen to the damned original…

Long Cool Woman, The Hollies, 1971. No Halloween, per se, but fits with:

Devil Woman, Cliff Richard, 1976.

Evil Woman, ELO, 1975. All these women…

Legend of Wooley Swamp, Charlie Daniels Band, 1980. Lucius Clay approves.

Monster Mash, Misfits, 1997. Yeah, I have trouble understanding the words too.

Mash, Original, Bobby Pickett (with Dick Clark), 1962. Classic; those facial expressions.

Thriller (Full), Michael Jackson, 1982. Before we knew the real MJ (RIP) horrors. With commentary from Price (RIP).

Poison, Alice Cooper, 1989. A few Cooper songs I could have gone with; I chose this one.

Ghost Riders in the Sky, Johnny Cash’s Version, 1979. Scary with a message.

The Time Warp, RHPS Version, Richard O’Brien, 1974. No need to suffer a theater full of freaks. (They still do that?) You’re welcome.

Blue Moon, The Marcels, 1961. Shout if you know why I included this one.

Nightmare on My Street, DJ Jaz Will Smith, 1988. Just remembered this one!

Pet Sematary, The Ramones, 1989. My personal favorite – possibly tied with Werewolves.

Sematary, Last Live Show, 1996. You don’t know this…

Stranger in Town, Extended Studio, Toto, 1984. Is your hero a criminal?

Here Comes Santa Claus, Gene Autry, 1947. Oops. Too early – for another week or two…

What’s that? 17? So many more I could add, even by the above artists. Feel free to throw out some suggestions in the comments – here or on FB. The more the merrier. Scarier. Whatever.

Have a great Halloween!

The cigar-chomping, government-bashing, culture-questioning madness shall resume soon.

* If you like/love these, please consider buying a CD or download. Show the love. If you don’t like ’em, consider North Korea…

RIP, Tom Petty??

music, rock, Tom Petty

*An UPDATE. Maybe Petty still lives! Lord, let’s hope so. First he was unresponsive and on life support. Then he was taken off. Then the pop media declared him dead. Now – seems he’s bad (very bad) but still clinging to life somehow. The Latest in the very strange case. Come on Tom!*

Don’t come around here no more…

If you grew up in the 70’s or 80’s (or both) and knew rock, then you knew Tom Petty. Gone at 66. Heart attack.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k_S6dALnQlg

The good, genuine pop culture, along with the rest of it, seems to be dying off. Or, maybe I’m starting to get old.

Tom-Petty-Net-Worth-2017-2018

Then again, can you imagine Petty, Elvis, James Brown, and Johnny Cash jamming tonight? They might.
