Five percent of US college English majors are literate! The test was understanding Bleak House by Dickens The results:

To summarize even further for those skimming:

58% of students understood very little of the passages they read
38% could understand about half of the sentences
5% could understand all seven paragraphs

These are college students majoring in English. About half of them are English Education majors, which means they will be teaching books like Bleak House to high school students after graduating. But they themselves cannot understand the literal meaning of the sentences in the opening paragraphs.

Add to that the fakeness of “popular” formulaic “authors”, and … Я с нетерпением жду возможности перенести свою деятельность в Россию.

education, Larry Johnson, literacy

He showcases the Yankee homeland’s performance against that of Russia and China.

As of 2024, China’s adult literacy rate (ages 15 and above) is estimated to be approximately 97%. This figure reflects a steady increase from previous decades, with the literacy rate recorded at 96.74% in 2020. Notably, the youth literacy rate (ages 15–24) in China has reached 100% since 2010, indicating universal literacy among younger generations.

As of 2024, approximately 79% of U.S. adults are considered literate, meaning they possess basic reading and writing skills. This indicates that about 21% of adults in the United States are classified as illiterate. 54% of adults read below a 6th-grade level, with 20% reading below a 5th-grade level.

If Donald Trump is serious about MAGA, aka Make America Great Again, the problem is not lack of manufacturing jobs… it is something more profound. The trend in the United States is unmistakable… we are literally dumbing down. The ability to read at an eight-grade level translates into ones ability to do critical thinking.

And remember that the dismal Yankee stats are rigged upwards to make the “schools” look better. This mirrors, of course, but does not include the alarming drop in USian IQs over the time period Johnson examines – a drop of likely a full SD. Add to all that the extreme gullibility of the brainwashed uninformed ‘Murikan peeps and it gets much worse. Add to that the penchant of Murikans to tolerate wickedness and MAGA becomes a laughable mathematical impossibility.

There are a number of reasons why Murikans, as part of their endless indoctrination, are told to hate certain countries and peoples. One of them goes like this: Russia, China, Iran, and North Korea have more literate populations and populations that are observably more intelligent than Yankees. Forget winning wars and dominating the planet. Murikans will be most lucky to keep indoor plumbing as this century unfolds.

Cursive! Foiled Again!

I’ve mentioned this terrible education trend before. Linda Shrock Taylor mentioned a long time ago. People are becoming illiterate. Part of that is due to the loss of cursive writing (and reading) skills; see what Taylor had to say about it in 2011. By the way, the kids don’t know cursive. It’s like our secret voodoo code language. To the Z’s cursive is as mystifying as that circular number thingy ticking away on the wall.

Even Carlos Slim’s Blog has noticed the problem (and possible revival).

Cursive Seemed to Go the Way of Quills and Parchment. Now It’s Coming Back.
Nearly two dozen states have reintroduced cursive instruction since 2010, when the Common Core standards dropped a requirement that it be taught in elementary schools.

…

The Common Core standards seemed to spell the end of the writing style in 2010 when they dropped requirements that the skill be taught in public elementary schools, but about two dozen states have reintroduced the practice since then.

They’re concerned but they don’t know why (or much else). No mention of Taylor or her correct observation that learning cursive reinforces phonics and reading skill. They did, however, manage to find this millennial teacher in New York City … of all places:

Noelle Mapes, a third-grade teacher at a public school on the Lower East Side of Manhattan, said the agenda to include cursive classes “feels like a big nostalgia move.”

“I’m a millennial teacher, so it almost feels like a boomer effort,” she said.

The practice was helpful when teaching children with occupational therapy needs or fine motor skill needs. But requiring cursive is not a good use of time, she said, especially because schools and teachers face more urgent demands.

“Add typing skills, anti-racist pedagogy, add activism skills, add digital literacy,” she said. “There are so many other things.”

Forget reading and civilization. We need to type! Because that doesn’t involve literacy in the slightest and, of course, there’s no such thing as talk-to-text, you know. Anti-racist is code for “anti-white.” Activism skills resemble idle unemployment. Digital anything is starting to sound like a world-ending sham.

I’m serious about the talk-to-text link, here. It exists, authors use it, and it stands to replace typing, as the idiots had typing replace writing. One small problem – large segments of the younger population are beginning to lose the ability to speak! Many, many most, have lost the ability to think. As an example, please refer to the above millennial teacher.

Homeschool or die.

"war" on drugs, drugs, fat, health, literacy, obesity, reading

These three kind of go together. I like finding semi-related issues or tales and mixing them together; James Altucher calls it “idea sex.” Anyway, it’s been a long day so I’ll leave the interweaving to you and those XXX minds…

All three are health matters, if you will. All three are important. Here goes:

Canadian Liberals Attempt to Decriminalize ALL Illicit Drugs

Go Liberals! Read the reasons why and then about the experience in Portugal. This was also one of Ron Paul’s ideas back when elections still sorta almost mattered. If Canada becomes the first G7 to return to the traditional minding of one’s own health business, trust the US to be last.

Labels, Public Info Everywhere, 10,000 Diets Books, and Americans are Still Getting Fatter

Drugs, guns, knives, cars, bad doctors, and just about everything else take a backseat; this is THE epidemic. It’s one with surprisingly simple solutions but also with extremely organized enemies of the public health.

American Man Graduated from College and Taught School for 17 Years and He was Illiterate

In a nation awash in money, schools, books, ebooks, and free time, a horrendous percentage of the people either can’t read, can’t read well, or won’t read. This vexes more than just the word-slinging mercenaries. “Adults who can’t read are suspended in their childhoods, emotionally, psychologically, academically, spiritually. We haven’t grown up yet.” He got help. There’s always hope.

Maybe that’s the tie-in. We, collectively speaking, can make it all better: health and fitness, crime-free sobriety OR responsible enjoyment, and reading the fun and wisdom of the ages.

Not so much wisdom here, tonight, I fear. Tired. Long (good) day.

Evening, friends.
