PERRIN’S Music Minute!

-Or, As Musical As We Can Get The National Affairs-

Warning! This one may wander all over the place like a glaucomic old man ensconced behind the wheel of a gracefully-aging Fleetwood. Feel free to sing along.

So! One thing led to another and last week I came across a superb edition, extended and rare, of a 1983 Berlin song. Thinking about it now, I can’t ever remember hearing Masquerade played on the radio (if it happened, it was campus rock radio back in ‘83); still, for my money, it’s some of the band’s best work, perhaps my favorite. For those who either remember or who never knew, please click that link and listen. The magnificent intersection of new wave and rock comes in hard around 6:19 with a rolling, pounding guitar riff which mingles perfectly with the lasting general melody, which itself is upbeat if thought-provoking – bordering on somber at intervals. (Note: MB actually plays and understands the music, PL merely rambles…)

The tune is-

Oh yeah, and Terri Nunn is forever HAWT!

The tune is about, so far as I can tell, the shattered dreams and hopes of aging or failed actors of the screen or the stage. The business, regarded with suspicion since ancient times, has a reputation for being rather harsh on potential talent. The lyrics speak to that darker side of entertainment, hauntingly and beautifully. The refrain is what landed the song at TPC this week:

♭

When you hear the price they paid,

I’m sure you’ll come and join the masquerade…

♭

I’m no expert, but I take that to mean that, despite everyone knowing how Hollywood, Broadway, etc. chew people up like hor d’oeuvres at a Harvey Weinstein party, people still keep patronizing the shows, with many intrepidly venturing into the fray, hopeful of professional success.

And, that is exactly the same kind of circus spectacle we witnessed in Iowa last week with the 2020 Hawkeye Cauc-eye: those zany Democrats and their presidential show. With my only paying nominal attention to practical politics and with November’s outcome being as clear as the recent Impeachment trial outcome, I devoted maybe .2% of my energies to analyzing what happened. Is “trainwreck” the word I’m looking for?

Faith in the Election?

Democrats, idiots, Iowa, voting

Some idiots are surprised to learn that their votes do not count.

“I really do feel bad for the people of Iowa,” Sanders said. “What has happened with the Iowa Democratic Party is an outrage. That they were that unprepared, that they put forth such a complicated process, relied on untested technology … There is very little doubt that what happened on Monday night — that complicated process, that is never, ever going to happen again.”

And for some Sanders supporters, the Iowa aftermath confirmed a belief they’ve held since 2016: that the Democratic Party just didn’t want to give their candidate a win.

“I felt like it was expected; no matter what, they weren’t going to let Bernie win,” said supporter Robert Cromer, who traveled to Milford from his home state of New York to see Sanders speak.

It wasn’t just Sanders die-hards who were suspicious. The lack of hard numbers in Iowa on Wednesday night allowed confusion to run amok: Former South Bend, Indiana, Mayor Pete Buttigieg declared himself “victorious” before any of the results were released, and Sanders declared victory on Thursday, based on the fact he won the popular vote in the state. Former Vice President Joe Biden’s campaign openly questioned the validity of the process, after he came in fourth place in the caucuses.

They’re all winners! Yay. And, of course, the voters are losers. But no, just as in 2016, the DNC has no intention of letting Bernie be the nominee. Period. Get this democracy foolishness out of your heads.

“Total Meltdown” in Iowa

The DNC hates Bernie, it’s as simple as that. Robbed in 2016, it’s happening to him again in 2020. The clown show in Iowa:

“They are matching the paper worksheets by hand,” an adviser to one of the top tier campaigns said. The party said only 35 percent of the results were in and none of it was yet verified. “They literally have no verified results right now so we won’t know anything until sometime Tuesday.”

“We have no sense when results might come in,” said Anita Dunn, a senior adviser to Biden. “We are, as other campaigns are, very concerned with what they might release: the alignment numbers are not adding up.”

“It’s a total meltdown,” she added.

They can’t count the votes until after they manufacture them. Bernie, however, released some preliminary info:

ujWo7Hh

About the only thing of real interest is a small number at the bottom. There are 9 honest Democrats in Iowa, as indicated by the number still supporting, at the end of the circus, their only candidate dangerous to Trump.

I still think it’s going to be Warren. Yeah, they may broker the convention, with a possible dark horse by Hills or Michelle, but so what? It’s just as likely that Bernie would keep running as an independent, taking 1/3rd of Democrat voters with him. Trump might not even have to do debates or even campaign beyond a simple Tweet, “Please re-elect me. Thanks.”
