This morning I was lucky enough to get an email from James Altucher that I could turn into an easy post, here. Then, I got an email from Sergey with the Obama/Merkel transcript. Now, I have a trifecta.

Vox Day responded to a request for a philosophy book:

Musing on meditations

Someone on Gab asked me if I would write a book of philosophy, and suggested something similar to one written by one of my intellectual heroes, Marcus Aurelius. His Meditations have been a significant influence on my thinking since high school, particularly this deeply meaningful piece of advice, with which he began Book Two in the Staniforth translation:

Begin each day by telling yourself: today I shall be meeting with interference, ingratitude, insolence, disloyalty, ill-will, and selfishness—all of them due to the offenders’ ignorance of what is good or evil. But for my part I have long perceived the nature of good and its nobility, the nature of evil and its meanness, and also the nature of the culprit himself, who is my brother (not in the physical sense, but as a fellow-creature similarly endowed with reason and a share of the divine); therefore none of those things can injure me, for nobody can implicate me in what is degrading.

That got me thinking about Meditations. If you’ve not read the Emperor’s notes, then you’re not really well-read in the classics. If that’s the case, take heart! The royalties on the old book ran out 1,700 years ago and there’s a free version available on Kindle (just click!)!

Amazon / Kindle.

Meditations contains some of the finest, calmest, well-bred Stoicism every written. And I’ve always been struck by the compatibility between the Stoics, including Aurelius, and Christianity. Simply put, not only will you enjoy the lessons, but you will be able to relate to most of them.

Many thanks to Vox for yet another excellent idea. And I hope he cranks his book out sooner than later. Thanks to Kindle and Amazon for a wealth of free classics. And thanks to all of you for reading this rambling. Now, click that link!

Fixing “Converged” Colleges: Close Them

“Converged” refers to the point where social justice warrior activity takes over as the primary focus of an institution. Many if not most Western Universities are now converged, having replaced education with SJW lunacy.

From UT in America to Oxford in England the trend is horrifying. Vox Day has the solution.

The more an institution converges towards the highest abstract standard of social and distributive justice, the less it is able to perform its primary function.

From SJWs Always Lie: Taking Down the Thought Police:

The public schools can no longer educate, so people are turning to homeschooling. The universities can no longer provide liberal arts educations, so people are becoming technology-assisted autodidacts. The banks no longer loan, the state and local governments no longer provide basic public services, the military does not defend the borders, the newspapers no longer provide news, the television networks no longer entertain, and the corporations are increasingly unable to provide employment.

Even as the institutions have been invaded and coopted in the interests of social justice, they have been rendered unable to fulfill their primary functions. This is the great internal contradiction that the SJWs will never be able to positively resolve, just as the Soviet communists were never able to resolve the contradiction of socialist calculation that brought down their economy and their empire 69 years after Ludwig von Mises first pointed it out. One might call it the Impossibility of Social Justice Convergence; no man can serve two masters and no institution can effectively serve two different functions. The more an institution converges towards the highest abstract standard of social and distributive justice, the less it is able to perform its primary function.

There is no point trying to debate about what the purpose of a university is any longer. The public should stop funding them, their assets should be seized and distributed to the public, and new institutions will rise up to take their place. Nothing of value will be lost in the process, because they’re already not educating anyone anyhow.

It’s fascinating to see how quickly allowing women to attend the elite universities destroyed an institution that was centuries old. One would think someone, somewhere, would eventually notice that the same pattern is playing out again, and again, and again in a wide variety of institutions, from the men’s clubs to the churches.

It’s not a radical solution. It’s a logical solution. If you blow out a car tire, you get rid of that tire. It has become useless for its intended purpose. So it is with the schools.

Ben Garrison.

Young people will benefit dramatically from not having $200,000 in funny money student loan debts. Electronic alternatives are already taking over the new digital classrooms. And NCAA felon ball can be reorganized and privatized into a minor league of sorts for the NFL.

That dream is over. Wake up.

Traditional book publishers are rapidly losing market share. This is bad news (overdue) for them and great news for the rest of us. These established houses hold both authors and the reading public hostage: writers, by limiting royalties and holding rights and; the public, by limiting available titles to what editorial staffs see as worthy.

The technology age has shattered the old monopoly. Now, even mid-wit, cost smoking bloggers can publish books – immediately available to readers. Independent presses, print on demand services, Amazon and Kindle are seizing a huge market share while opening competition and choices.

Fortune reports:

According to the figures from Author Earnings — which are based in part on regular samples of Amazon sales data — what’s really been happening is that the market share of established publishers has been declining, while sales of independently published e-books have been growing. In particular, sales of books that don’t even have industry standard ISBN numbers have increased.

Look at this chart:

Fortune.

Vox Day notes the traditional industry is collapsing.

This is a serious problem for the major publishers because ebook sales are a literally less-than-zero-sum game at this point in time. Regardless, it’s not so much the direct competition that threatens to do the big publishers in as it is the new X-factor in ebook sales, which is Kindle Unlimited. Notice which two types of publishers have been doing well since the KU change: Amazon and Small to Medium Publishers.

Good news for you! If I had gone with a dinosaur publishing company, I would still be waiting on someone’s approval. You, many of you, would not be reading The Happy Little Cigar Book right now.

As is, just today, I received 100 copies for local distribution and signing events. Then there is Amazon. Hooray! Order when ready, friends.
